| #1sirgoodytwoshoesMar 25, 2008 12:57:44 | As of now, I am playing a Paladin (5) Pious Templar (4) Fist of Raziel (2). My character is heading in the direction of blackguard, but from a pure RAW perspective, I'd essentially lose all the abilities of my Pious Templar Levels (as a diety shift would be in order) as well as my FoR abilities (being Lawful Good no longer) and could only "cash in" on five levels of fallen paladin with the Blackguard switch-leaving me woefully underpowered for a 12th level character. I have a couple of ideas I'm running by my DM, including allowing Pious Templar levels to remain as they are (presuming I choose a Lawful Evil Diety, since that PrC only requires Lawful alignment) and essentially migrating FoR to an evil PrC by switching every instance of the words Good and Evil, then treating fallen paladin levels as per usual when taking blackguard PrC. Alternatively, I've suggested possibly treating all the levels as Paladin levels (certainly not RAW, but RAI, methinks, since I took them all as a Lawful Good follower of a lawful good diety) and becoming a level 10 blackguard, level 2 fallen paladin (or 9 and 3 to get the next ability bonus from fallen paladin levels). Either way, just looking for thoughts on this, overlooked fatal flaws, possible other suggestions for making a switch to Blackguard with "paladin-esque" PrCs. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

I'd go ahead and take 2 levels of BG first though so you get both Dark Blessing and Divine Grace. If you can't use Eberron stuff, then trying to work out a deal of some sort with your DM is the best bet IMO; otherwise you'd be woefully underpowered, as you said. Mor |

A fist of Raziel is the exalted champion of good that is favored among all mortals by the Hebdomad. He is one step below the outsiders themselves, and would gladly give his life for the innocent. A Blackguard is a contemptible example of all that can be wrong with the human race. He would betray the gates of a temple to fiends so that they could eat the flesh of the orphans sheltered within. He would offer no quarter to enemies, and even Pistis Sophia would strike him down without thought. I'm curious how in the nine hells do you fall that hard? |

In building a character more or less based around the smite evil ability, it got to the point where when detecting two evil dwarves who weren't hostile, then charging the hell out of them, my character started to wonder if maybe he wasn't being all that "good" in his "smite first, ask questions never" policy. When he went to a few churches of good gods, they basically said "attaboy", so now he's doubting the concreteness of good and evil at all. If he ends up falling, he'll think he's neutral, but his anger at what he perceives as the good gods' tricking him into doing their bidding will cause him to seek revenge upon the church of Torm, leading to all kinds of evil acts. That, and a really pretty lady ![]() As for the Eberron idea, I suspect my DM would be okay with it, I'll have to check it out though, as we're playing Forgotten Realms and I'm not familiar with anything Eberron-ish. Thanks for all the ideas so far, though guys! |

You might think of them differently, but to me a Blackguard is Evil. I can see a guy that has rejected his church to stand as himself doing what he feels should do, but that sounds more Ln to me. Would your guy slaughter children for a small financial gain? GAH, the more I think about this the less I can make it work. This is why Paladin's are a pain in the butt. Shadowbane Inquisitor should work, but it doesn't. (It doesn't even really work mechanically when you consider it doesn't protect your Paladin abilities like it does your Inquisitor levels. If your alignment changes you don't qualify for the prestige class anymore because you lose Turn Undead and the ability to cast Detect Evil.) Would your DM let you make a custom class? If you could throw together bits and pieces of the three classes you could make something workable. Let's face it, Paladins aren't exactly a powerful class to begin with. A gimped pally just wouldn't be viable. (Bone Knight is cool, very cool, but likely doesn't fit your character concept. For one thing, it loses smite evil.) |

In every other situation, I'm totally with you, that's why this guy thinks he's LN. He won't start out murdering children for profit, but through a complete degeneration of his character via hate and embitterment, I'm seeing him get to the point where he kills anybody (children included) because he doesn't see them as worthy of living. Maybe Lawful Jaded would be a better descriptor ![]() |
| #9x-codesMar 26, 2008 1:10:32 | Where you're at right now is LN. You're certainly not Exalted anymore, questioning the goodness of good as you are, but losing those two levels of FoR is nothing. For now, level in Gray Guard. By the writing of the class, you can likely even go all the way to Lawful Neutral and still, in theory, keep your abilities. If you get to Paladin 5/FoR 2/Gray Guard 4 then your effective Paladin level there would be 11, you can trade that all down to Ex-Paladin 1/Blackguard 10 when you turn evil, and then you're a Ex-Paladin 1/Blackguard 10/Ex-Pious Templar 4 who is basically now looking for a new sponsor. |
| #10mcpoyoMar 26, 2008 8:10:24 | Could always talk to your DM about allowing you to retrain the FoR class levels for something similarly themed but evil aligned instead using PHB2 rules. |
