Having recently drawn a blank upon how to build a new BBEG I've been working on, I turn to you, CO.

I'm trying to make a Mad Bomber. A character who's repertoire of magical and non-magical explosives will leave entire countries quaking in their boots. He needs to be tactical with his bombs as well, so no overuse of ridiculously large scale explosions.

I'm planning on having the campaign he'll be part of start off with him bombing an assembly hall or city council in the area in which the PCs are staying. And then a considerably large reward for his capture. Through the course of the campaign his bombings will get larger and more grand eventually tantamount with the aforementioned large scale explosions being threatened on multiple major cities around the continent.

Any help you guys can come up with on how to build this guy would be great.

Posting guidelines? Stub build (basic build you've come up with, if you were going to ask)? Books allowed?

Can't squeeze blood out of a turnip. Yet. Someday. Maybe.

Emphasis on spells then, eh? Try this thread, cause I feel nice. Plus, I just f***ing love that thread.

Ah.. sorry.. I'm actually still thinking on a main build... I've mainly been considering Wizard 20 for magical hijinks and the ability to control a creature into wearing a full Crown of Brilliance and activating an item with a contingent fireball in it at a specific time.

All books are fine with me as I enjoy letting my players have fun with their builds. They're usually pretty inventive. :P

Anyways, that's what I've got so far.. the campaign isn't for another month or so but it's nothing without it's BBEG's so I'm seeking help for now.

Edit: Please tell me I'm correct in remembering that Wizard has access to a Contingent Spell and can Contingent a Fireball spell...

If not then there goes that tac-nuke down the drain.

Artificer?

I don't have my Eberron book on me at the moment.. mind elaborating? I know they can create a ton of items but is there anything in particular I should be looking at?

Artificers can beat the crap out of anything that has HP (well... as long as you can pay for that) by using some feats and the right wand.....

I'm not familiar with crafting or artificers, but I suspect you can take Craft Contingent Spell and be a dumbass. "I send my trained pigeon into the throne room. When it reaches the middle of the room, the contingency for the Widened Exploding Maximized Empowered +some random level 0 metamagics Fireball (CL10) I crafted on to the trained pigeon is fulfilled, and everything in the room takes 90+ damage." Don't forget Arcane Thesis (fireball) and the metamagic that lets you change the energy type.:D

This is one of those situations where a commoner or aristocrat bbeg can actually work. Terrorists don't need class levels. All they need is a bunch of victims and a trigger.

+1. And because I can't resist the situational lure...

"So you're telling me... this whole time... I've been fooled by someone... by someone with... with..."
"By someone with an NPC class, I'm afraid so."
"I feel dirty inside."

This is true.. but how would I reasonably go about procuring the intrusments of my chosen profession? An aritocrat could just hire some guys to blow things up... but a commoner would have a much more trouble actually being effective in this area iirc.

I dunno. You're the DM, I'll ask you: how do you feel about alternative bomb types? Fertilizer, flour, sawdust, dust fire flashovers, etc. 'Cause commoner 20 with skill focus: Craft: explosive could probably wreck stuff pretty good. And it's amazing how PCs never pay attention to high level commoners.

Maybe give him the Apprenice: Alchemist feat? Then you'd have a mechanical explanation for why he would know how to mix things to go boom. For back story he could either be a failed wizard's apprentice, or even the friendly appothecary that the PC's go to to buy their alchemist's fire and such.

I'm liking it. The friendly alchemist has a dark side...

Y'know, I just realized how hilariously typical of CO this is. Someone comes in and asks for help creating a Mad Bomber BBEG. We start building one... out of Commoner 20. Good grief. :D :D

Will normal explosives work, or do you really want cheezy magical stupidness, like with the artificer? I mean, I'm really loving the commoner 20 idea right now, but if you don't like it we can do other ideas.

Well.. I wanted the BBEG to have access to explosives of magical proportions but I can work with some homemade C4 if needed. ;)

I may make the level 20 Commoner have a high INT and WIS to give him the know-how to be able to plan some of the bombings I've thought up. Nothing says "I love you" like a back pack full of explosives and some chemical agents. :D

The reason I wanted the villain to be Magically inclined is to set up traps that pack a huge punch. Like a room with a patterned tile floor and in the center of the room is a large, ornate working of a symbol. The symbol is the foci for a contingent dispel magic set for a 20ft burst and under the normal tiles are explosive runes. Or something to that effect.

Edit: Large being mebbe one square across. so it'd have the range to hit a 4 square radius of explosive runes, iirc.

Then it sounds like artificer is actually gonna be your best shot... especially since it sounds like you're really going for the pre-planned BOOM. You've got the book, right?

If book is the Eberron Campaign Setting, the yes. Anything else may be a toss up. Between me and my players we've got pretty much every book. But to get certain books I'll need to know which ones I need beforehand. :P

hmmm... just off the top of my head...

evoker specialist / master specialist / war wizard of coymr (or however it's spelled)

using the war level spells from a dragon magazine(who's number i can't remember currently, but it was the one about WAR)

explosive spell feat
enlarge spell( more area)
blistering spell
arcane thesis for fireball or the war level version or both
anything else to increase the damage of the spells, lke that ring in Magic item compendium.

for a chunk of money to cast a 180 foot radius fireball that knocks everything away in it's area and burns most things to a cinder. good for leveling cities, and making sure you got you point across to the rest of the world...

I'll see if I can find the specifics on the spells and feats tomorrow...

You don't need 20 levels of commoner. 5 ranks in anything is enough proficiency to be dangerous since you're basically taking 10 or 20 when making the explosives (and have access to tools and/or followers).

You don't need magical explosives. The mundane stuff is probably harder to track down anyways. Perhaps the bad guy is your local handyman with a hell of a grudge. He's spent years planting explosives and rigging buildings, all in preparations for his final revenge. Since his work is then spread out over a long period of time rather than in sequence after the first attack, tracking him down should prove to be very difficult.
