i apologize if this has been answered already, but i used the google search (restricted to the boards) for quite some time (after looking through all the books i have that i thought might have it) to no avail.

since my fellow players read this board i wont go farther into specifics than is necessary. i have a character that will gain a bonus feat at a high level. the wording is as follows:

"At XXth level, the [class name] gains [feat name] as a bonus feat."

the character has enough levels in another class so as to cause it to gain this feat as a bonus after lv21. i seem to remember a rule (you know how that goes) that stated that if you gain a specific feat as a bonus feat, and you already had that feat (from choice or another class, etc.) that you could pick any other feat that you meet the prerequisites for.

my intention is to take the feat i would later gain as a bonus, so that when i gain the bonus feat (that i already have) at lv21+, i can take an epic feat that i qualify for instead.

is this legal? thank you for your time.

I don't think this is legal for general cases, using the written rules.

There's several newer Prestige Classes that allow for this sort of thing, but in these cases its in the specific class descriptions of those Prestige Classes. In these cases, it does say "or any feat that the character would qualify for", so Epic Feats would be allowed as long as you were 21st level and met the other feat's prerequisites.

Its a reasonable house rule to allow it, though, but probably not for an Epic Feat. Consult with your DM. A reasonable DM would allow you to exchange the bonus feat for another non-epic similar feat, particularly if its among the early WotC products, since the "or any other feat if you have it already" clause wasn't adopted until midway through 3.5's product cycle.

There's a "Simple Questions, Simple Answers" thread that is typically among the first two pages of this board for these kind of questions, for future inquiries.

Complete Scoundrel, p. 49, for the Malconvoker class:
"Skill Focus (Bluff): At 3rd level, you gain Skill Focus (Bluff) as a bonus feat. If you already have this feat, you can select any other feat for which you meet the prerequisite."

If your PrC says this, then you're golden. If not, then it isn't allowed. This isn't a general case, but specific to this PrC.

Complete Warrior, p. 35, for the Frenzied Berserker class:
"Diehard: A frenzied berserker gains Diehard as a bonus feat even if she does not meet the prerequisites."

Notice it doesn't say that you can get another feat if you already have Diehard.
