Aug 22, 2008 8:05:02 No ideas really how monstrous levels or level adjustment work, so if somebody could explain it to me in laymens terms would be appreciated

The character will be starting at 8th level. I'm going barbarian all the way.

So how many class levels is that and how many monstrous levels etc
How do the monstrous levels work?

(MM p32)
(RotW p95)
+8 Str
+4 Dex
+4 Con
–2 Int
+2 Wis
Ranger

• Large Size
• 50’ Movement
• Darkvision 60’
• Level Adjustment +2
• 4HD Monstrous Humanoid, which grants skill points,
Feats, BAB, & Base Save Bonuses.
• +3 Natural Armor bonus to AC

This means you have 4 hit dice of a monsterous humanoid - and your level adjustment is +2. each hit die is considered a character "level" and the level adjustment is added onto that. hence you start as a 6th level character. for more information though i recommend you check this site out http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/monstersAsRaces.htm (:

4 monstrous humanoid hit die
2 level adjustment empty levels
2 levels of barbarian

with 6 actual HD/levels altogether (4d8 + 2d12).

Aug 22, 2008 10:20:52 The monstrous levels are considered Hit Dice (HD). And, they can be treated as their own class levels when considering BAB, Saves, Skill points, and feats.

You will start out as a 2nd level Barbarian. You will have 3 feats because the 4 HD add to your level (consider yourself level 6 regarding feats and skills). You will have 4 levels worth of skill points as a Centaur and 2 levels worth of skill points as a Barbarian. For BAB and saves, will will combine 4 levels of Centaur (HD, really) and 2 levels of Barbarian. When determining XP, wealth, party level, encounter CRs, and other metagaming statistics, your effective character level is 8 because of the LA +2 (2 levels of Barbarian + 4 Centaur HD, + 2 LA).
