i am playing a sorceress, but plan on building a healer/trapfinder as a back up, the party needs both right now, a healer and a trapmonkey,

however the only books i have access to are phb1 phb2 mm1, mm5 and dmg,

house rules

races must be from phb

28 point buy

character must be 8th level

must not be evil alignment (no lawful evil, neutral evil, or chaotic evil)

if cleric, must worship one of the following dieties,

st. cuthbert, wee jaas, kord or, or good aligned racial deities

NO Pun-Pun

special:

what i want to see,

optimized but not uber cheesy

either a rogue or a cleric must be built.

must cover the following roles at least

Trapfinder, and Healer, any other roles are up to the builder.

the following books are banned

Book of 9 swords

Unearthed arcana

Book of exhalted deeds

Book of vile darkness

Anything requiring evil alignment

books one does not own

(all i own are phb, phb2, dmg, mm1, and mm5)

Builds, all i can think of is the UMD Archery rogue with the wand of CLW

option?

preferred races include, human or elf

This isn't even close to "almost core". Rogue/Cleric/Master of the Yuirwood would work. Master of the Yuirwood is a Forgotten Realms PrC in the Unapproachable East book. It has 3/4 BAB, full casting, and 6 skill points per level with a decent list. There are plenty of other PrCs that would work also, but I am less familiar with them. Ones that I've heard about are 1) Ruathar, 2) Seeker of the Misty Isle.

What's that feat in Dragon/Dungeon that let's cleric and rogue levels stack?

Rogue 1/Cloistered Cleric 19. Take zen archery and abuse divine metamagic.

In fact, you could do LN Rogue 1/Dread Necromancer 1/Cloistered Cleric 18 and really abuse divine metamagic and extra turn undead. Use Divine Power to make up the difference in BAB. Or take a prestige class. Worship Weejas to justify the DN in the build.

Dread Necromancer is in heroes of horror, cloistered cleric is in the SRD. Zen Archery is in Complete Warrior.

cloistered cleric is in unearthed arcana, which means it is banned. he also doesn't let players bring laptops to the table.

read the upper post.

You edited that in after my post...

Yeah, that makes a huge difference. A rogue/cleric multiclass is probably your best bet, with the Trickery domain and a high Int. You're still not going to be great as a rogue substitute, though. I wouldn't take more than a level or two of rogue. If anyone you know has the Races of Destiny book, the Able Learner feat would be a huge help.

darn, gotta convince my dm to let me play 2 characters, which he will obviously refuse. any ways to convince an overweight elderely figure who has dmed every edition to date, he didn't mention his rule on the leadership feat. the party has too many BSFT's (Big Stupid Fighter types) and anyone not a big stupid fighter is an arcane caster. the bard is absent, so we need the pally, but he doesn't show up eveery week, the only reason we slaughtered a cr14 monster at level 8 was the conjurer showed up and spam summoned massive animals. Techincally celestial huge dire animals with 4 or 5 natural attacks each, pounce and smite evil. (Celestial Dire lions, Etc.)

Just play a damn cleric, using Find Traps as carnivore suggested and buy a wand of Summon Monster 1 to set off the traps you find.

Cleric = win.

oh yeah a 750 gp wand that only lasts 1 round? not a good way to set off traps. especially since i can try to schmooze mr drow conjururer into summoning a fiendish bunny rabbit to set off the traps, take that fiendish bunny rabbit.

Can a good aligned conjuruer summon fiendish bunny rabbits to set off traps?

i know it would be evil to send the lawful evil bunny, but it would also be a good deed to the send said evil bunny into a trap, right?

How much does a wand of find traps cost?

If you've already detected the trap using Find Traps, then using a Summon Monster I wand costs you 15gp to set off the trap safely.

I don't know what kind of budget you're on, but that fits mine nicely.

A Beguiler maxing out UMD with wands of CLW works as well.
