Hey all, im currently trying to make a tripper build. ive had very little experiance with combat characters seeing as im used to more supporting roles like the healer and wizard ect. This build is focused around tripping and Aoo's, cheesy i know but im trying to focus on battlefield controll rather than full on combat force seeing as we also have a Warhulk in the party.
ive had a prolem thinking of classes to use in the build i think i have the vital feats needed for trippers but im worried my class choices are going to leave me behind the rest of the party.

The campaign settting is on a jungle continent, Im hoping to be mounted on a dinosaur later in the build hence wild cohort.
sadly Tome of battle and psionics are sadly not allowed in this setting but thats not definate so il keep you posted about that.

Race: Human

Lv Class BAB Feats
1- Fighter 1 Combat expertise, improved trip, combat reflexes
2- Fighter 2 Dodge
3- Fighter 3 Mobility
4- Fighter 4 Spring attack
5- Marshal 4 Skill focus: Diplomacy
6- Ranger 5 Wild cohort

the marshals aura will be the 'art of war'

32 point buy.
STR 16
DEX 14
CON 12
iNT 14
WiS 8
CHA 14

Starting equiptment: Guisarme, short sword, studded leather armour, adventuring gear.

So any other class ideas out there that could help me? any feats i missed out?

Thanks in advance

spring attack is no good, besides it makes you take two mediocre feats to qualify. Feats you need for control are stand still, EWP spike chain (or some other reach weapon), karmic strike, robillar's gambit. And if you must take wild cohort, make sure it's a large creature, it's reach might siergyze well with yours, just make sure it doesn't get killed. I don't know its name but i am assuing 'the art of war' is that marshal aura wich gives you bonuses to trip and such

You can just use a guisarme and spiked armor, if you don't want to burn a feat on EWP. I agree that Spring Attack is not worth it. I don't know that Karmic Strike and Robliar's Gambit can be used together. I'd take one or the other. Robiliar's Gambit is better, but has a +12 BAB prereq. If you can retrain feats as you level, take Karmic Strike early and retrain it to Robiliar's Gambit.

Later on, you're absolutely going to need some way to make yourself larger and stronger than normal. Otherwise, you won't be tripping the things you're fighting.

Edit: Just saw psionics are out. Just pay someone to Polymorph Any Object you into a giant, or something. Early on, get the party wizard to hit you with an Enlarge Person when fights start. Or buy him a wand of it.

You should look at the old "gatling gun chain tripper" thread by Snow Savant. It is a classic, and good example if you don't want to actually focus on tripping, just reach and lots of AoOs. With retraining, you could do tripping early and then move into that kind of focus later. You should be able to find a link in the Handy Links at the top of the forum.

You could always combine your past with your future and make a gish-tripper.

Illumian with AeshKrau is a good start as it makes up for 2 caster levels, gives you a +2 bonus on Strength based rolls, and makes bonus spells based off of your Str score.

Also, if you can get spellcasting, you can cast Greater Enlarge Person on yourself, which lasts hour/level.

One idea that could go many different ways AND be effective at battlefield control:
Duskblade 2/Fighter 4/Suel Arcanamach 3/Abjurant Champion 5/Spellsword 3/Eldritch Knight 1/XXXX 2

High BAB, High AC, High CL, Good HP, 5th level spells, Nets you lots of feats in the end, great self buffing ability, casting in armor, and lots of overall ridiculousness. (Remember the Heroics spell is good for another feat when you want it and has a really long duration)

The one nice thing about the spiked chain is that you can go into the Exotic Weapon Master PrC in Complete Warrior and pick up a few stunts like the flurry and trip stunts.

I do like gish trippers, you can easily still have 19 BAB and still get 8th level spells. It'll give you more options so you aren't a one trick pony for when tripping isn't a viable option.

You could also go a more traditional gish route while emphasizing tripping.

Human Paragon1/Barbarian 1 (Whirling Frenzy and Lion Totem)/Transmuter1 (Sudden Shift and Martial Wizard)/Human Paragon+2/Transmuter+1/Ruathar2/Dragonslayer1/Spellsword1/Abjurant Champion5/Ruathar+1/Sacred Exorcist4.

You'd end at L20 with pounce (Woohoo!), base wizard caster level 18, and 16 BAB. One of my players played a similar build and was quite powerful, able to handle just 'bout anythin'.
