I doubt that it'll qualify for the campaign itself (the DM frowns heavily on optimization and races/prcs are approval based). However I wanted to share the idea and see if it had any merit. Race: Changeling Classes: Beguiler 1/Wizard 4/Ultimate Magus 10/Recaster 5 Feats: Extend Spell - 1 Practiced Spellcaster (for UM trick)- 3 Point Blank Shot - 6 Precise Shot - 9 Empower Spell - 10 (UM) Residual Magic- 12 Persistent Spell - 14 (UM) Quicken Spell - 15 Maximize Spell - 18 Skills: This part isn't relevent to the build as all you need to qualify for the classes are Knowledge Arcana and Spellcraft which will most likely be maxed. The build itself seems solid to me though you do end up... *shudders* losing another caster level of Wizard meaning the build at 20 is only a wizard of 17th level. It's still enough to cast 9th level spells so I think the bonuses granted by recaster make up for the decreased spells. Granted my opinion is probably off since I'm a bit biased toward the Recaster. As for the feats I'm not particularly sure what the 'optimized' metamagic feats are, so I picked ones that I liked instead. I felt that Expanded Knowledge granted by Recaster could be useful since it'll be at the higher levels of spells. That and getting lots of metamagic fun. So... opinions? Did I mess anything up? ![]() EDITS: Added Residual Magic feat, switched up empower and maximize in order |

| #3maxbartonApr 29, 2009 0:38:35 | Oh I like Residual Magic, that could be very useful with UM's spell amount. It is probably better to get Empower first. Edited original. |
| #4owls_and_more_owlsApr 29, 2009 1:21:37 | Did you use the Changeling Wizard racial substitution levels from Races of Eberron? |
| #5maxbartonApr 29, 2009 11:07:25 | I'm not sure yet about it. Would it be worth dropping Evocation, Enchantment, and Necromancy? |
| #6ikildkennyApr 29, 2009 16:30:35 | imho you're better off playing a focused conjurer than a changeling wizard - allthough transmutation is a powerfull scool, illusion is absolutely sufficiently covered by your beguiler side of the char - so that would be (at least in my personal oppinion) your first choice of school to drop - the other two would be enchantment (its not that strong and covered by beguiler as well) and evocation for obvious reasons ... conjurer offers you the beautiful aprubt jaunt ACF ... you can still optain a (preferably improved) familiar via feats ... allthoug I wuld go the straightest route to archmage after completing UM ... thus Ending up with: Beguiler1/focusedmartialconjurer4/UM10/Archmage5 try to ge for the practiced spellcaster(beguiler) Trick to maximize Wizard casting ... youll end up with casting of (most preferably): Beguiler 10 (CL18), Wizard 18 (CL22 or 24 /w practiced spellcaster taken @ lvl 15 or 18) SO via the versityle Spellcaster feat you have access to +6 Metamagic /wout hightening your spelllevel and of course for up to lvl 9 spells |
| #7maxbartonApr 30, 2009 12:31:46 | Yeah I know the Archmage build and have seen the focused conjurer (it's what I plan to play if my DM doesn't allow Changeling). However I want to try to optimize a Changeling into UM. |
