Character fighter build

I want to make basically a straight fighter up to ninth level.  What would be the best route for a fighter build using scythe and having multiple attacks and mobility possibly substituion classes.  I just want opinions and ideas.  I've made straight fighters before and actually trying to revive an older character (Antioch).  I started w/ power attack, improve trip, improve initiative, specialization as the basics and never used any other feats besides from player's handbook.  My idealogy is having this character as a gladiator type fighter of course using a scythe.  What feats at what levels and/or multiclass addition could benefit me.  Also, having him as a human.  Also, not available to use ToB.  Maybe some ideas on Magic items for weapons/armor/misc. on the low end.

Honestly, not a fighter.

More helpfully, probably something like this

Barb 1/Fighter 2/Ranger 6.

And thats assuming you are playing a core environment.

power attack, improve trip, improve initiative, specialization

Don't take specialization. Otherwise good choices. YOu might want to add in combat reflexes if you can.

Magic weapons - You probably want +X weapon, +X armor, and whatever +X str and con items you can afford.  Get a +Dex item if you can get combat reflexes.

Even just Barbarian straight up is a good Tripper. Even better if you've got access to Whirling Frenzy and Wolf Totem options from Unearthed Arcana. You can use a Guisarme (or Scythe if you prefer) and trip LIKE a BOSS while raging.

Horizon tripper wins overall though since it gets all the nifty Horizon Walker abilities including frickin' Dimension Door every 1d4 rounds. Even the skill monkey aspect alone makes Horizon Walker a better Ranger than base Ranger. You can still activate Wands to cover Ranger Spells (great if you've got access to Wand Chamber, ok if you don't) and weapon styles don't matter that much even in builds that use them, and this one doesn't.

Edit: Previously said Lion Totem, had Complete Champion in my head. I had meant Wolf Totem for low-Int trip.

Ok, that's what I'm talking about.  I knew you guys could come up with something.  Thanks!

Additionally the following totems are pretty Slick, Ape (Climbing and free Power Attack, even the Intimidate bonus is alright), Bear (Durable, and incredable grappler!), Boar (Probably the best Rage overall and quite tough), Dragon (Well rounded and given some decent utility)

I hope this helps if you want to just run a straight up Barbarian. Get Whirling Frenzy and if you want to Trip use Wolf Totem, the other Totems I mention here are good but for a tripper you won't regret going Wolf. This will also let you be the party Tracker if that's a thing you think you'll need.

It's less that you're a noob (although that has something to do with it) than it is that you don't seem to have actually taken the solicited advice.

Now, assuming you are genuine in your desire for feedback, I will operate on the assumption that the build you posted is just what you already had planned when you started the thread. Given that, I think you should replace literally every feat choice with something else.

Let's make it straightforward. When playing melee without ToB, you generally pick at least one of two routes:

  • Attacks of Opportunity - Tripping XOR Stand Still XOR Knockback

  • Charging

  • That's it.

So which route do you want to go for now?

Horizon Tripper or JUST Barbarian can Trip, that seemed to be a big goal. Horizon Tripper's a great build that can almost always DO something (this is important, you'll feel left out if you can't do something). The Barbarian build's simpler and has a low cognative load, your routine is "I charge and trip the guy, that worked? I hit him too! He stands? I hit him again!"

I believe this is better.

Ranger 3/ Fighter 1/ Barbarian 2/ Horizon Walker 3

STR 20/ DEX 16/ CON 14/ INT 14/ WIS 12/ CHA 10

(human) Combat Expertise

1st Improve Trip

(fighter) Combat Reflex

3rd Power Attack

6th Whirling Frenzy

9th Hold the Line

Terrain mastery Underground, Desert, Forest

Better, but

A) Whirling Frenzy isn't a feat, and

B) Hold the Line isn't really worth taking, and

C) You'd be better off taking not taking the second level of Barbarian.

If you want to improve your ability to trip people (and you do) then you're going to be wanting to use a reach weapon. Specifically, you're going to want to use something at least as good as a spiked chain (which requires Exotic Weapon Proficiency).

So assuming Ranger 3/Barbarian 1/Fighter 1, feats look like this (assuming one flaw):

Level | Feat(s)

1 | Combat Expertise, Improved Trip, Exotic Weapon Proficiency (something awesome, e.g., spiked chain, spinning sword, or meteor hammer)

2 |

3 | Combat Reflexes, Endurance

4 |

5 | Power Attack

6 | Improved Bull Rush

7 |

8 |

9 | Shock Trooper

Obviously, you take the Barbarian ACF that gives you pounce from Complete Champion. Now you can run up to people and either trip them or kill them. Huzzah.

If you have pounce, you can full attack with a charge.

When you charge, you make your attack from the first square from which you can hit. With a reach weapon, this will likely be at the edge of your reach, so 15' for the rope dart.

A trip attempt replaces a regular attack, so you can replace any or all of your attacks on a full attack (whether charging or not) with trip attempts.

As for what levels to take, I want to know why your DM is being a control freak and not letting you make your character as you see fit.

You'd do better with Combat Reflexes than Hold the Line in this build. You get an AOO when the charging opponent moves through your threatened area (something they usually don't have to do).
