Hey everybody,

After playing 4th ed for quite a few years, an old friend is starting up a 3.5 campaign.  It's been years since I've played 3.5.  I don't remember much about the classes or what's where.

The last time I played 3.5, and part of why I quit, was playing a Truenamer and realizing there wasn't much I could do to prevent the class from being pretty crummy.

So, hoping for some help.  I don't need something super-optimized, but I do want something that is solid.  We're starting at level 3.  Based on the story of his game, I want to play an Elf.  I'd like to play something that's both melee and caster-y, the traditional bladesinger/gish.

Anyone here have any suggestions?

Desert elf (Unearthed Arcana), painted elf (Sandstorm), snow elf (Frostburn), wild elf (Monster Manual), and kagonesti (Dragonlance Campaign Setting) are the elves without a con penalty. I'd probably go with wild elf if it doesn't conflict with the setting.

Battle sorcerer (Unearthed Arcana) and duskblade (Player's Handbook II) are the two gishiest arcane classes at low levels.

If you go with battle sorcerer, the divine companion alternative class feature (Complete Champion) should be good at higher levels.

Seconding Maat's suggestions and adding that ardents (complete psionic), wilders, and psychic warriors (SRD) make damn good gishes as well, although the fluff doesn't quite match up (fluff is easy to change).

Of all the ones suggested, I would almost certainly go duskblade if you're just getting back to the game. It's by far the most forgiving of the classes mentioned here; if you make a mistake you can almost always correct it next level.

After doing a bit of looking, Duskblade sounds just about perfect.  Recommendations on where I could find build suggestions?

Well, the handbook would be the frst place to look. It was mirrored here.

(EDIT: Amazing, you leave out the HTTP and wizards thinks it's an in-site link...)
