| #1phonebillSep 06, 2008 20:14:15 | So im starting a new campaign soon and was totally not expecting the character requirements: Beginning Level: 4th Classes: Restricted: Barbarian & Psionics (also all related classes) Half of your classes must be in a full-progression spell casting class (spells @ 1st level) Ability Array: 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 10 Starting Gold: 3000g So me and my friend want to make a B.A. combo that really compliment each other, and we will probably be the two most experienced players, most of the others are completely new (I think). |
| #2maulornSep 06, 2008 20:33:40 | Half of your classes must be in a full-progression spell casting class That is strange... Go dr00d! |
| #3phonebillSep 07, 2008 1:30:15 | Yea it is pretty annoying, that's why we are having problems with coming up with even ideas what to play, i am thinking about going a wizard now because druid, cleric, bard, dragon shaman and sorcerer (i think that is what everyone is.) My friend and I really want to make "brothers" that compliment each other well (kinda the rp thing), but with the half lvls in a full caster requirement it got kinda rough and couldn't really think of anything. |
| #4natenateSep 07, 2008 1:30:33 | Half of your classes must be in a full-progression spell casting class At least half, at most half, or exactly half? At Least Half: Make a Druid and a Batman Wizard for your team. Get a Fleshraker (MM3) companion with Natural Bond to negate the Level -3 drawback. The Wizard should either use the Elf 1 racial substitution level, or go Master Specialist in Conjuration (PH2 variant ftw) or some other equally useful school, maybe go Shadowcraft Mage, and PrC out into Master Specialist or whatever else gives full casting asap. These characters should be able to handle nearly any situation, but be sure to give the other characters a chance to shine so they won't get bored or fell like sidekicks. The party as a whole will be successful, and hopefully the other players will take the opportunity to learn how to better make/play effective characters. At Most Half: Yuck, no more than 1/2 spellcasting progression. Warlock 20 and Dragon Shaman 20, assuming neither would be considered a full spellcasting class. If no Warlock 20, then Anything 5/ Ur-Priest 5 and alternate for the last half. Exactly Half: I'm going to guess that this is the case, assuming that every odd-numbered level must be spent on spellcasting and that every even-numbered level be spent on nonspellcasting, or something of that sort. One of my favorite builds goes Hexblade 3/ Sorcerer 2/ Talon of Tiamat 5/ Spellsword 1/ Talon of Tiamat 5/ Spellsword 4, which gets 10th level Sorcerer spellcasting at level 20. Go Human with Power Attack, Combat Reflexes, and a Glaive starting out. Take Frightful Presence, Maximize Breath and Clinging Breath, Practiced Spellcaster: Sorcerer, Arcane Strike, and maybe even Ability Focus: Frightful Presence (x2). Max out Bluff and Intimidate, you'll be able to skill check any noncombat encounter, one-shot a group encounter with a Maximized breath attack that Clings for 3+ rounds, and be a super-effective second-rank melee combatant with spells like (Extended) Wraithstrike, Bladeweave, Whirling Blade, etc. Note that the increased casting time for spontaneous spells with metamagic as-written does not apply to spells with a normal casting time of a swift action. Note that the feat Frightful Presence will stack nicely with your Frightful Presence class feature, as opponents failing both saving throws will become Frightened. For your partner in crime, maybe have him play a Dragon Totem Barbarian (UA) multiclassed with Duskblade, also with the feat Frightful Presence. Have him get Intimidating Rage, and from level 6 you two will be able to completely control a battle, or at least leave your opponents running aimlessly in fear. Maybe he can pick up Rage Mage (CW) to be able to use his weapon-delivered touch spells while raging, which is actually not a bad build when full spellcasters or heavier spellcasting gish builds aren't available. |
| #5phonebillSep 07, 2008 11:17:29 | Its at least half levels in a full spell casting class, but there was already a druid, bard, cleric, dragon shaman and a sorcerer so we are trying to avoid those classes. Now we are going to try and come up with some stupid combo that is just fun to think about. |
| #6maulornSep 07, 2008 11:37:46 | I would not worry about playing a class that someone else is already doing... Each character is going to be vastly different. |
| #7brainpiercingSep 08, 2008 2:57:52 | Is it CLASS or progression? The difference is clear of course. If you have to take a casting class without PrCs that sucks of course. And need it be at every level, or in the final progression? But you could still just go Conjurer10/Incant10 or something like that, even though you're delaying the PrC till really late. The better progression would of course be Conjurer3/Master Spec2/Incant10/whatever. The perfect pair always contains at least one Incantatrix with Persistant Spell, which you will be able to apply from Incant. Lvl3 to existing spell effects . The other in the pair is then a buff-heavy gish:Fighter1/Transmuter6/Ab.Champ.5/whatever rest The deal is to take Arcane Disciple(War) at some point, and persist Divine Power on the gish. Now the more versatile route (buff-wise) is of course taking Chameleon, because Chameleon gets Arcane AND Divine spells, and can cherry pick from every list. But I don't know if Chameleon counts as a Full-casting progression, even though it theoretically gives double its level as CL. A build would be something like: Fighter1/Duskblade3/Rogue1/Cham10/Fighter1/DivineOracle1/Unseen Seer3/whatever.... This combination can cast a TON of buffs, persist them, channel spells (although Chameleon doesn't get enough slots, really), have a ton of Sneak-attack on the chameleon, etc. You use the Duskblade to get an Arcane CL, but all the feats you take using your floating feat apply to Chameleon. The same goes for the casting PrCs you take later. (I actually haven't checked whether Divine Oracle works, it was an idea. Unseen Seer does work, you could reverse the order, then let Unseen Seer qualify for Divine Oracle. The whole point is upping CL on your Divinations (Hunter's Eye) to around 24+ at Lvl 20 for +8SA dice. |
| #8natenateSep 08, 2008 2:58:03 | In that case, I'd make a pair of Zarus (RoD) worshippers, both Human of course. They can be LN if you want to avoid evil alignments. Make one a Cleric 6/ Divine Oracle 4/ Contemplative 10. Say they've visited the Frog God's Fane from the Complete Scoundrel (p145) together to gain Skill Focus in a Knowledge skill for free, which will help the Cleric qualify for Divine Oracle. Get the Strength and War domains starting out, get Oracle at 7, Law at 11, and Destiny at 16. Get Divine Metamagic: Persistent for buffs like Divine Favor, Divine Power, and Choose Destiny. Get a Lesser Rod of Extend for buffs like Magic Vestment. Wield a Greatsword, get Spell Storing on it asap and hold a Blindness/Deafness in it. Get at least one Wand of Faith Healing since you'll both worship the same deity. A Cleric of Zarus wouldn't waste any spells on fixing nonhumans in-character, so all the more reason to use Faith Healing rather than Cure spells. This character would be a frontline fighter and melee damage dealer first, with his Cleric abilities serving as a secondary role, but don't lose any caster levels because buff spells are more powerful than combat-oriented class features. For the second character, I'd probably still go for a Batman Wizard. Maybe even go Illumian Beguiler 1/ Wizard 4/ Ultimate Magus, since with the Krau sigil if you get Practiced Spellcaster: Beguiler by 3rd level you can put all 10 Ultimate Magus levels into your Wizard spellcasting, as-written. At level 15 you'll have 14th level Wizard spellcasting and 8th level Beguiler spellcasting, and then you can go into something like Archmage or whatever would fit the character. Illumians are Humanoid (Human) so he should be acceptable as a worshipper of Zarus. |
