Howdy, all! I've been lurking for a while now, and just decided to get some help.

Now, my goal here is a charging fighter. I do not mean fighter as the class, but as an ideal. I want to fight things. Now, while we all know how to make a charger, the problem is this. I need a charger that is a)not mounted and b)effective at all levels. So no characters that only get good at level 17+, this guy is starting at level 3 or so. He does need to be effective the whole way up to high levels as well though, as I may make him come back, and I'm not sure when the PCs are going to fight him (see below).

Specifically, I was thinking along the lines of high damage, low survival. This is a very reckless warrior, so he'll be provoking AoOs a lot as well.

As for what he will be used for, it will be in a campaign I am DMing as an opponent in an arena type setting. Big, open space, with occasional pits and spinning blades etc. with the two groups starting about 100 ft. away from each other, allowing (for the most part) a round for any spellcasters to buff before melee bruisers get into it. I'm not sure which of my other NPCs he will be paired with, but it is possible he'll have to go it alone, in which case I'll bump his level up a bit.

What I have available is anything on the SRD, the Complete Psionic, Mage, Arcane and Warrior. Also, Races of Stone and Races of the Wild. Add to that PHB II and DMG II, with the first 3 MM, and you have my book library. Anything that isn't in one of those books, feel free to suggest, but please give me an alternative in case I cannot find it from one of my friends.

Edit: Oh, I forgot to say, this is random roll, and STR will always get my highest roll for this char, probably con next.

For a CR3/ECL4 character, how about a Goliath or Half-Giant Lion Totem Barbarian 1 / Dungeoncrasher Fighter 2 with Power Attack, Improved Bull Rush and Knockback?

Lion Totem Barbarian is from Complete Champion, and gives you pounce.
Dungeoncrasher Fighter is from Dungeonscape, and lets you do extra damage if you bull rush someone into an obstacle.

The barbarian is possible, does it give you rage as well? Thinking of possibly ending up in frenzied bezerker.

And as for dungeon crasher, I've considered it, but this is definitely a weapon dude, maybe a greataxe or a greatsword. More of a DM's idea of a creation than anything. Thanks, though!

Also, I editted the above, basically I need someone who can fight at any level, as I don't know when the PCs will encounter him.

Little Red Raiding Hood: A Tale of & Guide to the 3.5 Dragoon

Whom you speak of is THE iconic minion or BBEG who transforms into his final form. DMs have infinite minions/resources while PCs do not. The scariest enemy is the one that has nothing to lose/cares for nothing but the defeat of the party. Scary is fun. Keep doing what you're doing. :D

Hmm, it seems I'm doing something right :D I'll give that thread a read through. Thanks!

EDIT: Wow, how did I miss the beauty that is the Shock Trooper? -ac and +dam? Wow, a feat that fits mechanically and thematically!

I may wait 6 levels until having the PCs fight this guy just so he can use this!
ECL Class Feats
1 Barbarian 1 Power Attack, Lion Totem
2 Fighter 1 Imp. Bull Rush
3 Fighter 2 Intimidating Rage, Cleave
4 Fighter 3
5 Fighter 4 Destructive Rage
6 Full-BAB 1 Shock Trooper

Making him ready for Frenzied Berserker next level. Any thoughts? I could go Human, take the feats a level early and then go for improved sunder to try to get combat brute for momentum swings. Like I said, I don't mind taking AoOs. Can the two tactical feats be used together? Also, while the dragoon works awesome, and the story even fits with a pit fighter (coincidence?) I'd prefer something less jumpy. Although a little jumpy works. Just not jumping into the clouds.

Yes, it does.

That's what knockback is for: you power attack someone with your large greataxe and get a free bull rush.

Little Red Riding Hood kinda blows... (no offense). If you want truly obscene amounts of damage while without a mount [kinda ] play a centaur. Check out my build #1 in the link in my sig - Warning your DM might throw a mysteriously powerful save-or-suck spell at you if you start dealing thousands of damage a charge at everything in your full round move distance without even rolling for damage :D and no I'm not joking

I think what you're looking for is the Masochist:

No save or sucks :D The PC's sorcerer is focused on pretty much exclusively Direct Damage spells, even though a simple web would cripple this guy.

And the masochist intrigues me, Karmic Strike would work well, mechanically if not thematically. I'll keep that in mind... Perhaps for round two, when the PC's fight him again...

Hood is meant to stretch the upper limit for 'sane' damage and isn't a record holder for leet DPS.

At a very basic level, Orc Barbarian 2/Fighter 4/Frenzied Berserker 10 with the Lion Totem Barbarian varient (so you get pounce). Your feats will be Power Attack, Intimidating Range, Destructive Rage, Cleave, Improved Bull Rush, Shock Trooper, Leap Attack, and Headlong Rush. That's really all you need, so take other feats that appeal (Extra Rage might be nice, as would EWP in something nice like a Meteor Hammer. Imperious Command would be great due to Intimidating Rage).

It's totally viable from level 1 (Orc Barbarian 1 even without feats is pretty impressive). By level 6 you're doing incredible damage... two attacks on the charge that deal (assuming you're using a Masterwork Glaive at this point with a strength of 20) 1d10+22 damage with +14/+9 to hit. That damage roughly doubles every three levels (due to Leap Attack, Headlong Rush, and the increasing Power Attack damage) for the next 6 levels, and continues to scale nicely through all levels.

Good things to get would be a Tooth of Leraje (effectively makes any weapon a +5 weapon), Permanent Enlarge Person (for greater reach and damage), Permanent Gralleon Arms, possibly with Permanent Fuse Arms (if Savage Species is allowed), a Meteor Hammer or Rope Dart (for the long reach), a +1 Valorous Weapon (for another doubling of charge damage), and something to make you fly. A level of Warblade for Sudden Leap might be useful, or you can just get that item from ToB that gives that.

The Dragoon also actually works within the normal rules of the game. (Which are likely what the OP's group are playing by.)

JaronK: I don't see Combat Brute in that. Are there not enough feats for it? Is it unnecessary?

A level 4 dragoon cohort in a level 6 Red Hand of Doom game was considered uber. Yay for a +1 Valorous Lance and Battle Jump!

I see no need for Combat Brute in there, but the feats I listed can all be acquired by level 12 (and you've got 4 levels left over, which can be Fighter levels if you really want more feats).

But when you're doing over a thousand damage on the charge, I see little need to also knock someone around a little bit.

After all, the guy I listed at level 20, assuming full BAB but ignoring his last 4 class levels otherwise, gets 6:1 returns from power attack and deals triple damage on the charge (Headlong Rush+Valorous). He can also sack 20 points of AC to get those power attack returns... so -20AC gives +360 damage per hit. With four attacks, that's nearly 1500 damage from power attack alone... it's enough to one hit kill any CR 20 except for the Terrasque with just power attack, and two hits will take care of the Terrasque when you factor in the other damage sources.

Specifically, assuming a strength of 33 at level 20 (16 base, +4 racial, +2 Enlarge Person, +6 Belt of Giant Strength, +5 levels) and a +1 Valorous Large Glaive (with a Tooth of Leraje), plus dumping 20 AC into Power Attack via Shock Trooper while Raging (basic level) and using Frenzy, you've got 4 attacks on the charge at +43/+38/+33/+28, each of which deals 6d8+456 damage, for an average of 483 damage per hit, 1932 damage if they all hit. 20 foot reach, too. You can pretty easily bring that damage up from there... Gralleon Arms, Fuse Arms, Strongarm Bracers and so on.

For a completely different option, consider the Bulldozer from here:

http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=1532.0

That's also charge based, and slams enemies all over the place. Lots of fun... more fun than a basic charger, IMO.

If you are Large sized you can qualify for Knock Back wich let you bullrush as part of a melee attack.

So something like this:

Race: Goliath

Fighter 6 / Barbarian 2 / XXXXXX

Feats: Improved bull rush(+4 to bull rushing), power attack, Knock back(let you bullrush with every melee swing), shock trooper, combat reflexes, xxxxx

this should let you do loads of damage, smash people into walls with knock back+dungeoncrasher, pounce for full attack on a charge.

Hi there! Sorry for a random interrupt, but out of curiosity, where is this Tooth of Leraje from?

It sounds like it might be something my current Dungeoncrashing Warblade would love to have.

Thanks for any information!

See Tome of Magic: Pact, Shadow, and Truename Magic (AKA ToM: Binders and some cool magic items)

it's listed under Teeth of Dhalver-Nar

If I'm reading this right, it's a CL20 Greater Magic Weapon 1/day

Ah! Thank you I was oddly thinking it might of been from that book, but for the life of my I couldn't seem to find it. You think after using the Savnok tooth for so long I would of thought of that.
