| #1magicdealerJun 18, 2009 21:06:17 | This is a build designed to have excellent spell progression in both clerical and sorcerer spells. It is cheesy, but I'm more interested in its functionality than the other. Sorc1/Cloistered Cleric2/Mystic Theurge4/Holt Warden3/Arcane Heirophant10 This is a Venerable Dragonwrought Jungle Kobold with Loredrake Stats Str 4 Dex 16 Con 12 Int 11 Wis 21 Cha 19 These are the stats after a set layout of 18 16 14 12 10 8, modifying them with the Venerable, Kobold, and Template bonuses. 1Sorc1 Two flaws, Dragonwrought, Alternative Spell Source, Loredrake, 2Cleric1 War and Planning Domain(extend spell), Draconic Rite of Passage 3Sorc2 Persistant Spell 4Mystic Theurge1 5Mystic Theurge2 6Mystic Theurge3 Draconic Resorvoir, Greater Draconic Rite of Passage 7Holt Warden1 8Holt Warden2 9Holt Warden3 Arcane Strike 10Arcane Heirophant1 11Arcane Heirophant2 12Arcane Heirophant3 Divine Metamagic 13Arcane Heirophant4 14Arcane Heirophant5 15Arcane Heirophant6 Quicken Spell 16Arcane Heirophant7 17Arcane Heirophant8 18Arcane Heirophant9 Open feat slot 19Arcane Heirophant10 20Mystic Theurge4 At second level I have a sorcerer caster level of 4. Sorc2 + Loredrake 2. That gives me 2nd level spells, and my alternative feat allows me to have them as either divine or arcane, so I satisify the requirements for mystic theurge. Arcane strike gives me extra melee fun as needed. Quicken spell for the occasional true strike+massive spell sacrifice to annihilate the bbeg. Is this character legal as laid out? And are there any suggestions for further optimization? :D |

| #3mister_crowleyJun 19, 2009 4:33:47 | aww hell I'm bored at work..... Ok Arcane Strike is only for melee weapons so it wouldn't help with your longbow. Before you pat yourself on the back, you're probably the 728th person to think they're cleaver adding dragonwrought kobold, loredrake, and white dragon templates together ![]() Next, being a dragonwrought kobold does not qualify you for loredrake. You need to be a true dragon. Dragonworught Kobolds are not true dragons. True dragons are defined as getting more powerful as they get older (pluses to all stats, abilities, etc). Last item and the most important one. Is it legal? Well why ask us? It's your DM you should be asking. And unless he's a total tool, his answer will be...you guessed it..... ![]() ![]() ![]() If you're not even playing in a campaign and just doing this for ***** and giggles then why even bother asking? |
| #4magicdealerJun 19, 2009 6:40:35 | :p as a matter of fact, these very forums gave me the information I needed on the dragonwrought kobold, loredrake, and white dragon template stuff, as well as the discussions regarding all of the above. I wasn't aware that there was a final conclusion that the dragonwrought Kobold didn't qualify for loredrake. Side note here really fast. The Savage Species book has a section on Rituals, used to transform one character to another. Would it be feasible to use a ritual to change into a True Dragon and then pick up the feat? The Minor Ritual of Association would change the racial type to True Dragon for 56000g and some xp. Regarding Arcane Strike, I thought the DR version of it included ranged weapons... Upon reading the Complete Warrior version, I note that it is there delegated to melee attacks. I can live with that. Thanks for the heads up on that one :D As far as is it legal... I'm asking the boards for two reasons. First, I could make a character and just give it an ability, At Will: Target of your choice dies. But the point is to create characters within confines of the rulebooks. Second, I am the DM, and I want this character to be legal within the rules. He'll be an NPC "working" with the party for a while, before finally betraying them, and turning on them. Effectively, the BBEG at the culmination of several interlinking story arcs. |
| #5sofawallJun 19, 2009 6:42:18 | aww hell I'm bored at work..... Loredrake/Dragonwrought is still highly contested. |
| #6dr_rocktopusJun 19, 2009 6:52:44 | Loredrake/Dragonwrought is still highly contested. With enough pull in both directions that your dismissive tone is completely uncalled for, Crowley. Why are you so harsh? |
| #7magicdealerJun 19, 2009 15:50:16 | Hmm... that thing with the rituals actually has me wondering something. I go venerable as a kobold. If I then change my form to something with a longer lifespan with a major ritual, do I then gain additional pluses and minuses from aging into venerable a second time? Could this be used to hop around the age categories, netting more and more venerable bonuses each time? |
| #8CantripNJun 19, 2009 16:01:33 | No. Not even being Reborn does that, unless you rule that you lose the benefits as well (which is RAW, technically, but there is precedent to keeping the benefits and just not getting any more and also keeping the physical stat loss). |
| #9emyJun 19, 2009 17:32:10 | No. Not even being Reborn does that, unless you rule that you lose the benefits as well (which is RAW, technically, but there is precedent to keeping the benefits and just not getting any more and also keeping the physical stat loss). What about reincarnate? |
| #10risnerJun 19, 2009 19:19:36 | It is cheesy Legality depends on your DM interpreting several rules counter to RAI and using shady RAW. WDS is just a horribly written cheese LA+1 template. It should be much more than LA+1, but it isn't. Loredrake is True Dragon only, and despite some people's opinion there is nothing in the RAW that says a DWKobold is True Dragon. There has been huge long debates (even a recent one) with it boiling down to your DM considering the old age +1 to INT/WIS/CHA as "grow more powerful with age." If you depend on that interpretation your DM is either foolish or drunk. Alternative Source Spell is a dragon magazine feat (DR325) and it doesn't allow you to cast spells higher than you can currently cast in the other spell slots. So if you can only cast 1st level Divine spells, you can't use ASS to cast 2nd level Divine spells even if you have 2nd level Arcane slots. What about reincarnate? Some people (like me) think you don't gain Immortality when you get to be a Druid of sufficient level to cast Reincarnate. In other words, I don't believe reincarnate resets or alters your "aging", you just die in a young body. |
| #11magicdealerJun 19, 2009 20:18:42 | Ok Risner, how about using the ritual to gain the True Dragon Subtype? That should then allow me to qualify for all the other feats that are questionable atm, correct? With the build as currently posted, at 1st level, I cast as a 4th level sorcerer, giving me 2nd level spells. With alternative spell source, I then turn them into divine spells. You're right though about WDS being underpriced :/ Are you aware of a template that increases casting as an alternative? Or maybe a +1LA race that would provide a nice boost to the layout? I'll go through and adjust the original post build in a bit to reflect the removal of WDS Oh, and that would knock me down to a 3rd level sorcerer... so I might have to start off with two levels of sorc and one of cleric. |
| #12risnerJun 20, 2009 0:14:42 | Ok Risner, how about using the ritual to gain the True Dragon Subtype? That should then allow me to qualify for all the other feats that are questionable atm, correct? DW Kobold is not a "true dragon", since it doesn't say "you become true dragon" rather it only says "gain dragon type and age categories." There are a number of "only true dragons are ..." in Draconomicon that exclude kobolds (for instance warm/cold blooded, breath weapons, etc) As for your second question, no. All races with spellcasting has an LA of at least 2 and all have racial HD on top of it. Aranea in MM1 and some of the spellcasting hobgoblins iirc in MM5 have sorcerer. Also urlanoi (sp?) have it. All have high ECL. |
| #13magicdealerJun 20, 2009 0:52:55 | DW Kobold is not a "true dragon", since it doesn't say "you become true dragon" rather it only says "gain dragon type and age categories." I'm not referring to DW Kobold in reference to this point. I'm referring to the ritual from Savage Species to gain the True Dragon. Specifically the Minor Ritual of Association to gain the True Dragon subtype on page 148. It's a bit pricey, but I think worth silencing any arguments about the validity of taking certain feats. |
| #14risnerJun 20, 2009 12:57:39 | I'm referring to the ritual from Savage Species to gain the True Dragon. Sorry, yes that is golden. You might be interested in the Sharn (3.5 version from Anauroch page 153.) ECL9 with CL6 Favored Soul and CL6 Sorcerer, perfect for MT 10 (ECL19 with CL16 Favored Soul/Sorcerer.)
