So I been playing DnD for several years now and it occured to me that I have never played a Dwarf (not sure why, maybe i'm racist!). Since our old DM is brushing of his campaign and moving it forward 80 years my human Mystic Theurge isn't going to be around to help out so I decided to make a Dwarven Defender.

25 pt buy and most books allowed, but no flaws and i've been kindly asked to not overdo it (i'm generaly considered as our power gamer, but its mostly that the others dont know what they're doing)

I've got most of the build together but having trouble with the feats and items.

Korgan
Dwarf
Fighter 4/ Paragon 3/ Dwarven Defender 3

Str 16
Dex 13
Con 18
Int 10
Wis 14
Cha 8

Feats:
Dodge
Endurance
Toughness
Weapon Focus (warhammer)
Combat Focus
Combat Stability/Defence
Combat Vigor

I've taken the combat form feats as they help my poor Will and provide fast healing 4. There are better feats, but those are still pretty good. The only problem i'm having is that I cant decide between Combat Stability or Combat Defence. Our DM rarely uses things such as trips, but +1 dodge vs a single target is pretty weak for a feat (I never take dodge unless its required for something else)

I know that using a warhammer instead of the Dwarven Waraxe is a bad choice, but the background I've chosen is that he is the decendant of Bhazad Khrar (and thus a direct decendant of Moradin) and is looking for the legacy weapon Bloodcriers Hammer. Thus he'll use Strongarm Bracers and wield a Large Warhammer till he finds it.

I'm also not sure if buying a Mithral Fullplate is worth it yet. I wont have a high Dex even with items and its quite costly to get the mithral, but at the same time it saves me spending the money again later on. However, spending that money now on extra defence could be what I need to survive till later comes (this campaign is notorious for killing players)

Any other advice to help round it off is also welcome.

As long as your enemies use good strategy, whenever you're in defensive stance, they'll stay out of your reach and attack your allies. All the defense in the world isn't helpful if it stops you from contributing in battle.

Mechanus gear (Planar Handbook) gives +10 AC and max dex bonus +0. Mithral Mechanus gear is probably what you want to go with for armor.

Find a way to get your size increased... use a reach weapon, with short haft feat. You're trying to build a battlefield controller, then use maybe a spiked chain? With whirling property.

Maybe look at the ToB maneuvre based deepstone sentinel too, just in case.

2 levels of Deepwarden would really fit a Dwarven Defender. Then you could use Constitution instead of Dexterity for your AC. Try to up your Constitution as much as possible, and maybe forget about armor.
Dwarven Paragon is good, you might want to go with Ranger levels instead of Fighter for Deepwarden.
You could try the dragonborn template, although you wouldn't be a ''real dwarf'' anymore. Once you're a dragonborn though, you could try to get back your dwarven abilities with the Stoneblessed Prestige class. (If you're DM allows it)
Dwarf +2 con
Dragonborn +2 con
Paragon +2 con
Stoneblessed +2 con
Deep Warden Con bonus on AC instead of Dex.
+8 con = +4 AC. Add in the bonuses from Dwarven Defender, and an already high constitution, maybe a nice belt and you're ready to go.

First of all, your Stance is a trap you will never use unless FORCED to.  Never build around the stance. It's all the other benefits of the class that rock....good will save, +4 Dodge AC, and DR.  Sitting in one place is a waste.

Make yourself a highly mobile Dwarven Defender who can lay the smackdown into anyone or anything.

As a side note, see if you can get a one person flying carpet and stand on THAT. It moves, you don't.  Mobility with your stance.  Floating Disk would do the same.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I would have replied sooner but the damn internets been on the blink.

I know the Stance is pretty useless as anyone with half a brain can defeat it, but its the Dodge AC, Uncanny Dodge and DR that im interested in. The stance is more for standing infront of a door to protect the other party members while they run away (if it ever comes to that). I'll use a variable shield so I can make it a Tower Shield for Cover if the enemy wont come near.

Dragonborn isn't a playable race unfortunately as Bahamut doesn't exist in the setting, but I doubt I would take it as I want to play a really dwarf like dwarf. As for Deepwarden, my DM asked me to be nice, i don't see adding CON to AC as being nice Laughing, besides, the requirements are nearly impossible unless your a ranger and that doesn't fit in with the concept of the character.

Mechanus gear is a great armor, but I dont think it fits with the whole Dwarfishness! (is that just me?) but a set of Mithril Heavy Plate is right up my street.

I will definetly keep some potions of enlarge person and a good reach weapon (probably a glaive) for some excellent battlefield control if im forced to enter a defensive stance.

I played a Dwarven Defender before, and Deepwarden isn't exactly overbearing just because of stone warden. After all, it's not like you're trying to play an ubercharger or a caster or anything like that.

That said, I like this build:

Warblade 7/Deepwarden 2/Dwarven Defender 10/Deepwarden +1

Feat breakdown:

1 - Insightful Reflexes - lets you dump Dex
3 - Dodge,
5 - Endurance (Warblade bonus)
6 - Toughness (try talking your DM into Improved Toughness qualifying as Toughness)
8 - Track (Deepwarden bonus)
9 - Heavy Armor Optimization
12 - Greater Heavy Armor Optimization
15 - Shield Specialization (heavy)
18 - Shield Ward

It's probably overspecialized, but you can definitely tank. If you can get a decent enough Charisma score, Goad may be a good selection to taunt the enemies into attacking you. Full BAB, 15/6/12 for base saves, and my favorite part: every HD is a d12. Seems like a tank to me.

There's no point to more Deepwarden levels after 2.

For the purposes of class features, no... but 6+Int skill points, d12 HD, and a +1 to reflex save isn't bad at all, at least in my opinion.

However, if your DM does like roguish NPC's, I believe at the fourth level of Deepwarden allows the Warblade, Deepwarden, and Dwarven Defenders level to stack for uncanny dodge, if it's a concern.

Races of Stone -> Battle plate. Your DM will probably allow you to use it without wasting a feat. After all, you can't get more dwarfish than that :D.

EDIT: you can grab the speed enchant from defenders of the faith, which would give you an additional +4 AC and an extra attack. You get an animated tower shield. That's 13 + 10 +4 = 27 AC which is not bad for a lvl 10 character. Something big and nasty to hold in two hands and smash opponents around you. You should have enough money to afford that

The Speed enhancement has been revised to either be +7 and Epic, or +1 and equal to boots/speed.
