Hi all

I am going to play a cleric. Since it is our fist high-level adventure our DM placed a single-class restriction.

The adventure starts at lvl 9 and goes up to 19

Race: out of PH or FRCS
Class: Cleric
Alignment: any good or any neutral
Ability Scores: 6x 4d6 hence I can't count on high ability stats
Wealth: according to PH for a character of lvl 9 (36'000gp) An item's max value is limited to 1/3 of the characters total wealth.

Party: 1 mage, 1 fighter, 1 rogue, 1 monk, 1 ranger, 1 cleric, 1 cohort (mage)

Role: The clerics should be the party buff. He shall help others where it's most efficient. His is NOT a combat healer (I think clerics have a lot more to offer than that). He can heal between encounters, besides most of the party member have a belt of healing. After buffing up the party he can enter melee in order to support others or he can protect arcane casters while hurling spells himself.

I am looking for:
- feats
- domains
- gear and magical items
- good buffing spells (not the common ones like bull-strength, cat's grace,...)
- anti buffing spells

So far I have ended up with the following:
- race: human
- domains: protection, spell (FRCS)
- feats: scribe scroll (from spell domain), extra turning (PH), protection devotion (CC), divine fortune (PH2)
- gear: fullplate +1, heavy steal-shield +1, heavy mace +1 (adamantine), ring of protection +1, cloak of charisma +1, vest of resistance +1, peripat of wisdom +4, healing belt, magic bedroll, daylight pellets, restful crystal, wand of lesser vigor, wand of cure light wounds, all kind of remove scrolls, scroll of delay death, scroll of revivity

I am thinking about:
- augment summoning (+spell focus, both PH) (is it still a worthy bonus @ such levels and worth 2 feats?)
- touch of healing (CC)
- magic devotion (if my DM allows taking this feat for the spell domain)

The idea behind extra turning is using the turn/rebuke slots for buffing, maybe damage dealing in case no undeads are nearby.
Summed creatures could support the fighter and distracting foes from attacking the mages.

I have no clue if the above is a good idea or totally crap. I am quite new to d&d (my 4th character, all the others are of lower levels) and would appreciate any help and good advice.

Thanks!

What books are you allowed?

I personally like the Gold Dwarf Divine Metamagic type, doing DMM: Persistant up the wazoo!

So this takes place specifically in Faerun? Cause in Faerun, clerics NEED to follow particular gods, there is an issue with being a cleric of an ideal, there, I think...

Books: core, FRCS, complete series, compendium series that is what i have and all are allowed. My DM should have most of the 3.5 books.

Yes, its an FR Adventure.

So you are going to have to choose a deity AND choose domains from that deity..!

Maybe a human cleric of Gond? Planning and Metal? I believe the faerun version of Metal lets you choose ANY hammer. Choose some exotic two handed hammer that does crazy damage, get divine metamagic - persist spell, (the planning domain helps), persist some awesome buff spells, persist Divine Power and maybe some other group buff spell, maybe even get Power Attack, and go do MASSIVE damage...

Thanks

can you please help me with the persistent stuff? the description of permanent spell in the PH are very restrictive and my dm is most likely not going to allow any more spells.

Persistant Lesser Mass Vigor will keep your whole party healed throughout the day, allowing you to focus on everyone else.

Lesser Mass Vigor is not on the list working with permanency in the PH. In fact none of the buffing spells is. As I already mentioned my DM does not allow other spells to work with permanency if there is not another official source or some kind of rules describing xp cost and min caster level. Things can get unbalanced with things like that pretty easy.

Persistant, not Permenant.

Source of Persistant? I can't find such a spell (neither in PH nor SC).

Thank you very much

It's a feat in one of the Completes. You'll want to use Divine Metamagic with it, another feat.

Does this mean, that one can spend up to 6 turn/rebuke attempts to cast a "Persistent Lesser Mass Vigor" as a 3rd level spell?

If yes, what ways exists to increase the number of turn/rebuke attempts per day beside extra turning, CHA increase, reliquary holy symbol (which is a bad idea since it uses the same body slot as a peripat of wisdom)?

Actually it is 1 turn attempt + spell level adjustment, so 7 turns for persisting a spell

Ways to get more turn attempts:
Extra turning
Cha increase
Reliquary Holy symbol (check Magic Item Compendium for how to combine that with a periapt of wisdom, it doesn't cost more)
Night sticks (libris mortis)

Reliquary Holy symbol (check Magic Item Compendium for how to combine that with a periapt of wisdom, it doesn't cost more)

Do you refer to the chapter "adding common item effects"? I am not sure if my DM is going to allow this (usually he is extremely restrictive) I already asked him if he would allow me to wear a peripat of wisdom and a reliquary holy symbol at the same time (i was willing to sacrifice another body slot for it) and he denied.

Actually it is 1 turn attempt + spell level adjustment, so 7 turns for persisting a spell

Most of the divine metamagic abilities cost 3 turn/rebuke attempts. Divine metamagic is quite expensive. It requires more or less to specialize the character solely to this ability otherwise all those feats do not provide a good value. With all the items and feats a character gets a maximum of 14+CHA-Mod turn/rebuke attempts a day.

Otherwise this divine metamagic stuff is great and gives a character quite a few nice options :D

What about the summoning feats (augment summoning, spell focus)? Is it worth taking? If yes, are there other worthy summoning feats/items?

If your DM allows Magic Item Compendium, it is only logical that he allows the rules in that book. The rules clearly state that you can combine a periapt of wisdom and a reliquary holy symbol. Worst case scenario, take craft wondrous item and make it yourself.

Make yourself Human. Take the Planning and Undeath Domain if you can. (Planning only if you can't take both). Grab Persist & DMM Persist at first level. Take extra turning for all the other feats if you want (or craft wondrous item if you have to). Get a reliquary holy symbol and a nightstick (multiple if your DM will let them stack)

That's 30+ turn attempts without even counting Cha. Enough to persist at least 4 spells. At higher levels, that's really all you need. If you want to break his campaign, build a cheater of mystra, you have everything you need for it... o.O

I did oversee that one can take extra turning multiple times. Thank very much for your help! This one should be fun :D

Another idea could be, to go for Radiant Servant of Pelor. It provides several nice bonuses and "Greater Turnings". You should check with your DM, if you can use Greater Turnings for DMM (Persistant Spell), but if it works, its a huge bonus. One real problem you have is the prerequisite: Sun Domain.

The Purification Domain from CDivine is a nice one for buffing. Recitation as a 3rd level spell is pretty strong, especially if you can get your hands on a Lesser Metamagic Rod of Quicken. That way, you can drop a Quickened Recitation and another mass buff like Righteous Wrath of the Faithful, or a single target buff like Fires of Purity (this spell will make even your monk good....and thats saying something!!!!).

I'd say invest a bit in Pearls of Power. They'll make you more viable in multiple combats and allow you to memorize a diversity of spells to handle more than just buffing.

Look in Complete Arcane and Complete Divine.

I believe Persistent Spell is in Complete Arcane, and Divine Metamagic is in Complete Divine.

My epic cleric always use this party buff spells:

Blessed Aim (1st lvl, SC)
Blade Brothers (2nd, PH2)
Circle of Prot. Evil (2nd, PH)
Conviction, Mass (3th, SC)
Vigor Lesser, Mass (3th, SC)
Delay Death (4th, SC)
Revenance (4th, SC)
Sheltered Vitality (4th, SC)
Righteous Wrath of the Faithful (5th, SC)
Revivivy (5th, SC)
Death Ward, Mass (8th, SC)

Take divine ward feat from PH2, a must to have if you dont want to be to close from ennemies.

P.S. Multiple stack of Nightstick dont work that was a Sage answer.

Thank you all very much for your great help.

I am not exactly sure what the pearls of power do (I am not a native english). As I understood it, one can cast up to two spells on it to "charge" it. Once a day it is possible to cast a spell from the pearl instead of the normal prepared spell list. I think so far I should be right. What is not clear to me is, do the pearls loose the charge or does it keep it? If it keeps it, can one change the stored spell?

Sage isn't authority on rules. Whether they stack is still debatable, although the Sage offered a good opinion on it. It's really still in the "Ask your DM" territory.

Whoa. Okay, here's a simple example of how it works. A cleric casts a second level spell (Cure Moderate Wounds) for example. Now he has expended that spell slot for the day. He'll get it back the next day, normally. Instead, he uses a standard action to activate a second level pearl of power. Now he regains that Cure Moderate Wounds as if he had never cast it and can cast it again. The pearl can be used once per day.

I hope that helps.

So basically it allows to use the same spellslot twice a day?

Mass Lesser Vigor has a max duration of 25 rounds.
Does this even work with Persistent Spell? Would the duration not still be limited to 25 rounds?
I fear my DM is not going to allow this

The Persist overrides the previous duration. The spells duration becomes 24 hours. That overrides the normal spells duration. Besides, it is a useful ability, but not one of the more powerful ones.
