| #1carborundumApr 17, 2009 12:43:30 | For a one-off game I want to play an archer cleric. Just to see what all the fuss is about. The rules are: level 5, elf, 9000gp, no Exalted Deeds stuff, roll the stats. The stats are: 15, 13, 13, 12, 11, 5 I've considered Zen Archery and 5 dex but the AC hit is bothering me. Then I considered 5 Int, but it's rough on the skills. Can you guys give me a few tips on how to build this guy? If you have pointers on equipment to buy I'd appreciate that too! Thanks in advance! |
| #2phaedrusxyApr 17, 2009 12:50:06 | You're entitled to a reroll, I do believe, but I forget the specifics. If your stat average (or total modifiers?) is below a certain point, you get to reroll normally. That said, I've played an elven cleric archer with a 5 Charisma. As long as you're not planning on (ab)using Divine Metamagic, it should be fine to dump it. I said he had a terrible facial deformity, and that being teased because of it had scarred him emotionally. He was a cleric of Fenmaril Mestarine, and stayed in the wilderness all the time. |
| #3cruApr 17, 2009 13:36:54 | middle-aged snow elf (frostburn, +2 dex, -2 cha) 13-1 STR 12-1+1 CON <= +1 stat increase 11+2-1 DEX 13+1 INT 15+1 WIS 5-2+1 CHA (alternatively go with Aquatic Elf from MM (+2 Dex -2 Int), dump Int and invest your single skill point into Concentration) (or wild elf +2 Str +2 Dex -2 Con -2 Int, keep at least 12 con, dump int) (consider dragonborn template, +2 Con, -2 Dex) full plate +1 (2800 gp) elvencraft dwarvencraft composite +1 STR longbow +1 = ~3000 gp metamagic rod of extend, lesser 2700 gp periapt of wisdom 4000 gp Elf domain - Point Blank Shot 1 Zen archery 3 Rapid Shot or Precise Shot 6 the other shot |
| #4ninjarabbitApr 17, 2009 15:01:15 | You still need a 13+ dex if you want to qualify for archery feats like rapid shot so don't dump it. I'd dump either cha or int |
| #5carnivoreApr 17, 2009 15:28:35 | try this: Dragonborn Wood Elf(+2 Str,-2 Int) Ranger 2/ Cloistered Cleric 3 Domains: Elf .................. Point Blank Shot War ................ Weapon Focus(Composite Longbow) Knowledge ....... exchange for feat: Knowledge Devotion 13 Str(11 +2 Racial) 13 Dex(13) 12 Con(12) 11 Int(13 -2 Racial) 18 Wis(15 +1 lvl+ 2 amulet) 5 Cha(5) Feats: Track(ranger bonus) Rapid Shot(Ranger bonus) Knowledge Devotion(Cleric Bonus) Weapon Focus(Composite Longbow)(Cleric Bonus) Point Blank Shot(Cleric Bonus) 1st lvl: Zen Archery 3rd lvl: Precise Shot 9000gp to spend: 1350gp Elvencraft Dwarvencraft Composite Longbow(+1 Str) 500gp Misc Arrows 1100gp Mithral Chain Shirt 205gp Darkwood buckler 750gp Healing Belt 750gp Wand of Cure Light Wounds 4000gp +2 Amulet of Wisdom 150gp Light Warhorse(trained)... combat ready and can fight 100gp.. War Pony(trained)... for carrying supplies... combat ready and can fight 75gp...3x Guard Dogs(trained).....trained for various things Elvencraft Elvencraft Longbow(RotW p166) any Longbow (including Composite, Mighty, etc.) May be used as a Longbow –or– a Quarterstaff. The wielder threatens the squares around himself/herself even if the last use was as a ranged weapon. The bow is not damaged when used as a melee weapon and the wielder may shift between ranged and melee as part of a Full Round Attack (if desired). cost +300 gp |
| #6gryfterApr 17, 2009 16:07:16 | try this: Visions of two cantankerous crafters with completely different opinions arguing over how to better create the bow. And as always with design by committee, it ends up totally borked and completely useless. Anyway, I'd probably laugh someone right out of the room if they brought that to the table. |
| #7phaedrusxyApr 17, 2009 16:11:57 | I actually had a bow in a game that was crafted by both dwarves and elves. The DM made it up, and it was a gift to my character (I forget from who). So, to each his own. I don't think arbitrary restrictions/commentary on RP fluff specific to campaign worlds has any place here, personally, unless the OP posts it to tell us what he can or can't do. |
| #8gryfterApr 17, 2009 16:16:32 | Oh, I totally agree. I just thought it was really funny. |
| #9jameswilliamogleApr 17, 2009 17:00:02 | 5 Int. You still get 1 skill point per level. |
| #10carborundumApr 18, 2009 2:50:47 | Thanks guys! It boils down to whether it'll be more fun playing a 5 Int or a 5 Cha! I think it'll have to be the Int, since the rumour is that there are plenty of undead in the adventure. Cheers! You've given me plenty to work with! |
| #11tshernApr 18, 2009 5:42:44 | I don't think arbitrary restrictions/commentary on RP fluff specific to campaign worlds has any place here, personally, unless the OP posts it to tell us what he can or can't do. Especially since nothing prevents a weapon manufacturer from using both techniques without being of either race. |
| #12Dictum_MortuumApr 18, 2009 12:56:47 | 5 con + necropolitan is another idea. |
| #13goldenbraidApr 18, 2009 13:15:22 | playing a char with 5 int can be bothersome. You would have to be dumber than the average orc and thats a lot... meaning in RP you would never be able to solve anything or have a bright idea... cha on the other hand lets you the option of a good reason of having it so low. perhaps ritually scarred, perhaps a past of torture at the hands of something, dunno... even then, cha being penalized youd still be able to use divine metamagic, as nothing prevents you of buying extra turning and nightsticks and so on... in the end you just really need 14 turn undead attempts for the 2 most broken persisted spells I can think at the moment, everything else is vanity =P, maybe 21 for three... anyway I believe you asked for some advice of how to build a cleric archer? as far as I can tell, one (dunno if the best, but a very decent one) of the builds is to go for extend spell, persistent spell, divine metamagic persistent spell and for every 7 turn undead attempts you spend, one of your spells (buffs)will have a duration of 24 hours. Think of divine power: 24 hours per day and many others. Depending of how many t/u attempts you have you can start using them for less useful or conditional buffs: my favourites have to be greater spell immunity, veil of undeath, freedom of movement, and so on... For domains my favourites are Spell /Animal from a character optimization perspective but it might be not as exciting to play as another type of cleric RP wise. Animal could be scalykind or any other that has Shapechange as a lvl 9th domain spell. Believe me, that spell, when persisted, changes everything. Look at the Gloom in the Epic Level Handbook (i believe its 21 HD) 24 hours per day and youll see what im talking about. Spell domain gives you access to two of the best spells a cleric could have access to: Anyspell and Greater anyspell. Meaning: Arcane buffs..oh yeah. Last time I checked polymorph is an arcane spell, you would be able to get it (and persist it) when you can cast lvl 6th spells. There's an option to overcome your natural 5 in a stat: Polymorph rewrites your physical scores, so you could very well have Str or Dex 5 (id prefer str) and have a decent one when you poly. I wouldnt choose constitution because polymorph/shapechange are errataed to not give you extra hp based on your new constitution score. Just some ideas in case you want to go the optimized way. If you are playing on a Forgotten Realms campaing , consider a property of ranged weapons (which name i dont recall currently) that whenever you fire a missile weapon (say a bow) the arrow splits in two and essentially you make the double of attacks per turn. I believe it costs a +3 bonus. Anyway, hope it helps. |
| #14dr_rocktopusApr 18, 2009 13:43:31 | 5 con + necropolitan is another idea. This is an amazing idea. Seriously. This one this one this one! |
| #15elrathApr 18, 2009 14:10:18 | 5 con + necropolitan is another idea. +1 to this. Hard to dump cha as a cleric, and int is always pianful to dump. |
| #16ninjarabbitApr 18, 2009 14:17:41 | If you going necropolitian see if your DM will allow you to be spellstiched. |
| #17Dictum_MortuumApr 18, 2009 17:20:45 | If you going necropolitian see if your DM will allow you to be spellstiched. > ![]() |
| #18carborundumApr 19, 2009 5:29:19 | Thanks for the explanation, Goldenbraid! It's all a bit clearer now ![]() As for Necropolitan, the campaign will be undead-havy so that could turn out interesting! If the other cleric in the party turns undead, am I affected automatically? Or does he select 'enemy' undead? |
| #19Dictum_MortuumApr 19, 2009 5:46:33 | Thanks for the explanation, Goldenbraid! It's all a bit clearer now I think you are automatically affected. Although you get turn resistance iirc as a necropolitan AND you cannot be turned by a cleric if you have total cover against them (or you are more than 60ft away) >:D |
| #20carnivoreApr 19, 2009 17:38:21 | also heres something to think about..... if you build the Cleric Archer right.... you wont need a Lot of Self Buffs... the Build i gave works great... without Buffing for combat... it is always ready... if it is a "One Off" game, how high do you think you will actually get? another thing to remember.... Archery is VERY feat intensive.... Extend Spell, Persistant Spell, Divine Metamagic(persistant) ... use up 3 feats.... then you will be spending even more resources to get more Turn Attempts it is far easier to make a Simple Cleric Archer build without all of that... and it is thematicly better :D |
