| #1zombiedogMay 23, 2009 13:28:59 | Okay, being possibly the worst person for builds, I'm continuing my play with a Cloistered Cleric. We just reached level two, let me give me a bit of a larger rundown. Okay, my stat line, to the best of my memory is something like str 10 dex 14 con 12 wis 16 int 16 cha 13 or 14 (Lame I know). I can't remember my second feat but the one I remember is Augment Healing. I was focusing on being a healer/buffer/utility caster, but as of last session my character is going through some stuff. I found that the higher ups in my Church were conspiring against the Grandfather, and I ended up semi throwing down with the Grand Scribe (minimum level 5, as devised by a spellcraft check. Not sure what class as he cast Hold Person twice, and I doubt he would've prepared it twice). I was able to resist a single Hold Person but once I'd expended my Nimbus of Light I had zero offensive ability, and had to beat feet in an attempt to tell the Grandfather of his trechary. Either way once I got there, turns out he didn't care, I was Held again, knocked unconcious and almost executed for heresey. Character wise, I am still going to follow Pelor and be his voice, but I refuse to be a part of religious organization. I'll try and preach about faith in every day life, instead of as dictated by a governing body. I want to be do my best to become more powerful, so I can instill and enforce the virtues of my god, and more importantly never be in a situation where I can't fight for what is right. I'm just not sure, build wise, where to go from here. Thoughts? |
| #2owls_and_more_owlsMay 23, 2009 21:07:45 | C Cleric 2, Favored Soul 4, Radiant Servant of Pelor 10, Divine Oracle 1, Contemplative 3 This is a very simple build. I'm sure someone can come up with something much better, because I'm also not great at CO work, but this is my suggestion. Your Favored Soul caster level is 18, an unavoidable 2 level drop if you no longer want to progress as a Cloistered Cleric. Finish out RSoP, dip into Divine Oracle for the Oracle domain, and Finish up with Contemplative. Again, this is sub-optimal, but it's the best I could do. |
| #3hijaxxMay 24, 2009 3:07:01 | why the hell do you suddenly start to progress favored soul spellcasting? cloistered cleric 5/radiant servant of pelor 5/contemplative 10 is a nice, simple, straightforward build. you have to take favored and primary contact from cityscape to qualifi for RSoP, but after that its simple. |
| #4muertogMay 24, 2009 3:13:52 | why the hell do you suddenly start to progress favored soul spellcasting? +1. Favored Soul, especially w/ lost caster levels, is usually a bad call. |
| #5owls_and_more_owlsMay 24, 2009 3:30:32 | why the hell do you suddenly start to progress favored soul spellcasting? Because His character is no longer a part of the church, which is what the cloistered cleric is. Favored soul seemed to fit the whole "gone rogue but still faithful" angle. I prefaced my post by saying it wasn't fully optimal, and unless he convinces his DM to allow him to continue taking levels in CC, or be able to switch over to regular cleric levels without a loss in caster level, I stand by it. |
| #6ashylMay 24, 2009 4:36:06 | I don't see why you need to change a class to magnify the change on your character... He may still very well be a cloistered cleric, only changed in ideas and standards, not necessairily in his class too. If you want to give him a more rogue-ish flavour, there is the Unseen Seer PRC, sneak attack, many skills ect - efectively a rogue cleric. But really, if you don't want to change your class, you can progress as a C-cleric... Just RP the whole thing out IMO ![]() |
| #7magicdealerMay 24, 2009 4:46:54 | Well, you've got two levels Cloistered Cleric, but we'll assume you don't want to take any more. We'll also assume that Cloistered Cleric and regular cleric stacks for spell levels. Cloistered Cleric2/Wizard1/Cleric1/Mystic Theurge10/*insert clerical prestige class of choice with full caster progression. Special notes about this build: In order to qualify for mystic theurge at 5th level, you need to pick up the Feat: Alternative Spell Source, and some skills. Then at level 6, you pick up Arcane Strike. From this point forward, you'll be dealing a *lot* of damage potentially. at 6th level, you function as a 5th level cleric, 3rd level sorcerer. With Arcane Strike, you sacrifice spells to get bonuses to hit, and extra damage as a free action. No limit to how many spells you sacrifice. As you progress, and your spells increase quickly in count, you'll be able to deal very significant damage. And with alternative spell source, you can also prepare all your spells as divine and just bypass arcane spell failure. The reasoning is this: Clerical magic is divine in nature. It's a gift from the gods. But it is more protective in nature, and arcane is more offensive. By melding the two, you may be able to better realize the goals of Pelor. The benefits here are that since you only lose one level of clerical spell progression, you still receive your 9th level cleric spells, and can function effectively as a cleric all the way to 20. However, your reserve of arcane power gives you the ability to never be helpless again. Also, if you take one of the reserve feats from Complete Mage, you will literally never be helpless as long as you don't use that last spell slot. If at later levels, your character ends up turning lawful neutral or some non-good alignment, you could instead take true necromancer for your final few levels and end up with an even higher final count for your arcane spells. With this build you'd cap with 9th level divine, 6th level arcane. Oh, and I went with wizard instead of sorcerer, because your intelligence is significantly higher than your charisma. |
| #8ninjarabbitMay 24, 2009 6:20:39 | Sounds like your character might end up being on the Chaotic Good branch of Pelor from now on. |
| #9ashylMay 24, 2009 7:01:41 | Sounds like your character might end up being on the Chaotic Good branch of Pelor from now on. +1 No need to change class and all, just RP the change in your character's...character. |
| #10muertogMay 24, 2009 11:25:54 | 1) Clerics can switch to a different faith and resume their class abilities. 2) Clerics of different wings or sects of the same faith have been known to oppose each other. 3) Rules "discourage" crossing between variant classes. Otherwise why would you ever take more than 2 levels of cloistered cleric? 4) Clerics can be followers of an ideal or cause instead of a deity and still continue to gain class abilities. Just say you are trying to fight the corruption within the church of pelor and continue to gain cloistered cleric progression as desired. Heck, if the DM is fun, he might even be may be making part of the story to include this plotline. |
| #11zombiedogMay 24, 2009 14:07:54 | +1 +1. My thoughts as well. I won't change the C C class, since it still reflects my character pretty well I think. He's more about the power of knowledge then of a good hard mace in the jaw. The Cloister 5/ Radiant 5/ Contemplative 10 sounds nice and simple, and exactly what I'm looking for. Though this is just a quick look from Crystal Keep. I have some questions, though. It says that the req level for Radiant is Clr6, which doesn't line up with the build, and also Contemplative needs Clr10, or Pal10. Would the Radiant levels stack for the req? |
| #12ninjarabbitMay 24, 2009 15:08:29 | How about cloistered cleric5/divine oracle2/ROSP5/contemplative8 |
| #13hijaxxMay 24, 2009 15:13:29 | we can qualifi earlier for radiant by taking the favored and primary contact feats from cityscape... no wait! you cant fit them in before level 6, which is already too late... rats so CC 6/RSoP 5/Contemplative 9 and BTW, contemplative only requires knowledge(religion) 13 ranks and the ability to cast 1st level divine spells. we could no matter what qualifi at level 10. |
| #14zombiedogMay 24, 2009 15:47:13 | Yeah I'm fine with following CC for 6 levels. I read up some more on Radiant Servant and even up until the 10th level it's pretty cool. I really like the fact that I get Empower and Maximize for healing spells for free and can continue to cast them as their base level. Should I stick with Radiant for the full ten? If so, where do I go afterwards for the last four levels before Epic? What I'm liking about playing this class is it's really getting me into spellcasting. I had no idea how most of spellcasting worked, but now that I know with my domains I cast healing, good, and divination spells at +1 caster level, so my Cure Light Wounds is 1d6 +5 (Augment Healing) and my Minor Wounds is 3, and it all makes sense to me, you know? I'm digging it. Also, is there a point when I can change Domains? |
| #15yossMay 25, 2009 14:27:25 | I think you're probably stuck with whatever domains you picked. I love Luck, Trickery, and Travel. Time is good too. Undeath clashes with RSoP, but is good for DMM. |
| #16owls_and_more_owlsMay 25, 2009 15:48:08 | If you are allowed to continue CC, thats fine. CC 6, RSoP 10, Divine Oracle 1, Contemplative 3 would serve you well. Full casting with a total of six Domains You can't change your existing Domains, but there are several PrCs that grant you an extra domain. |
| #17ashylMay 25, 2009 18:05:32 | I'd add: *Time Domain (imp init , haste lvl 3, forsigt 8, timestop 9, CONTIGENCY 6) + Imp Initiative *Celerity +10 speed, haste lvl 4, timestop 9 And a nice ''trick'' is geting the Oracle Domain, which contains tons of nice but situasional Divination Spells. If you manage to get to spontaneously convert readied spells to Domain spells, your character becomes a lot more versatile (imo), considering you don't need to ready any divinations ahead of time, when you need one, you got it instantly! A quick way to achieve this, aside from ACF's, is with the Domain Spontaneity feat (spend 1 Turn atempt, convert spell to domain spell) my 2 s.p's. |
| #18lormadorMay 25, 2009 18:18:21 | There's a feat in Power of Faerun called 'Heretic of the Faith' (I think) that allows one to choose domains (and even alignment) not normally allowed. While you're probably stuck with the domains you initially chose, there are PrCs that grant additional domains, Contemplative for example. If one insists of sacrificing some CO for flavor text on the character sheet, 'Heretic of the Faith' has you written all over it. It could even be used to get one of those cool, sick domains; or just a strange one that doesn't see play much like Mentalism or Slime. |
