| #1Apollo_TheronFeb 19, 2011 11:11:01 | Can you enchant cloth and if so what is a good +1 enchantment? |
| #2Maat_MonsFeb 19, 2011 12:29:41 | You can only put armor enhancements on armor and bracers of armor (Arms and Equipment Guide 130). There are several armors made from cloth that can be enchanted. Padded (Player's Handbook 123), silk swathes (Sandstorm 99), spidersilk (Underdark 66), and gnome twistcloth (Races of Stone 157) are all armors made of cloth. Shadowsilk (Tome of Magic 155) is cloth that can be used to make armor, even in place of leather in some cases. Thistledown (Races of the Wild 168) is superior cloth that can be used to make padded armor. Padded armor requires no proficiency and costs 5 gp. Thistledown padded armor requires no proficiency, has no arcane spell failure chance, and costs 405 gp. There are quite a few other ways of getting these results. It's quite easy for anyone but a monk and a few other poorly-conceived classes to gain access to armor enhancements. I recommend mindarmor (Magic Item Compendium 13), which gives a +5 untyped bonus to your will saves against mind-affecting effects as an immediate action 3/day for +3,000 gp, and commander (Magic Item Compendium 9), which gives a +1 morale bonus to the will saves of your allies (but not you) for +2,000 gp. While not strictly armor enhancements, you might consider a lesser crystal of arrow deflection (Magic Item Compendium 25), which gives a +5 untyped bonus to AC against ranged attacks for 2,500 gp, a lesser crystal of lifekeeping (Magic Item Compendium 25), which gives a +3 competence bonus to saves against energy drain, inflict spells, and death effects for 1,000 gp, or a lesser crystal of mind cloaking (Magic Item Compendium 25), which gives a +3 competence bonus on saves against mind-affecting abilities for 4,000 gp. |
| #3Apollo_TheronFeb 19, 2011 20:42:47 | Thanks a lot! By the way do you know if there is a d20 opt wizard guide in general? |
| #4phoenix00Feb 20, 2011 9:09:56 | This is the master list of CO community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758... In this list you will find hundrends of links to various guides, handbooks, and important links. Some no longer exist besides the "internet archive" due to wizards.com redoing their boards Internet archive here www.archive.org/web/web.php Notice if you scroll down to the wizard section you will see 4 handbooks. Furthermore there are even more threads talking specific types of wizards such as enchanters, handbooks on various schools of magic, handbooks on the best equipment, etc. |
| #5Apollo_TheronFeb 20, 2011 18:23:51 | can githcraft be applied to padded armor? Because there is no one reccomding or showing that githcraft can be applied to padded armor. Also what off handed shield, and/or buckler can a wizard use? |
| #6Maat_MonsFeb 20, 2011 18:51:19 | The two basic options for shields are a githcraft masterwork buckler, which costs 615 gp, and a githcraft heavy mithral shield, which costs 1,620 gp. Both of these require no proficiency and have no arcane spell failure chance. Githcraft can be applied to padded armor. However, githcraft adds +600 gp to the cost of padded armor while thistledown adds only +400 gp, and both result in padded armor with no arcane spell failure chance. Githcraft does have the added benefit of giving you a +1 bonus to concentration checks, which can justify the extra cost. I don't believe the concentration bonuses for a shield and armor stack though. If you want to take one step up in both protection and cost, githcraft leafweave leather armor requires no proficiency, has no arcane spell failure chance, and costs 1,350 gp. If you want further options, I'd first like to know a few things:

Dragon Mag is under consideration. We can use setting specific material as long as it's not 3rd party I'm pretty sure. It can be -1 or -2 but no higher then that. Maybe 5 feet movement restriction at max. Not really. I'm really just trying a way to max my armor with no arcane spell failure. Not only that but also having at maximum -5 movement and -2 checks. What things stack with mage armor and shield and things of that sort? |
| #8Maat_MonsFeb 21, 2011 17:09:36 | There are three armor modifications from Dragon magazine to ask your DM about:
These are all from Dragon 358, and there are several other useful weapon and armor modifications in the same article. Oriental Adventures has two pieces of equipment that can be worn over armor of certain types to improve its protection, dastana and chahar-aina. Dastana is also printed in Arms and Equipment Guide. Both items increase the armor bonus of the foundation armor by +1, and they stack with each other. Enhancement bonuses on the three don't stack; you take the best enhancement bonus and add it to the total AC bonus provided by the items. You do benefit from all the armor special abilities on all the protective items, which is a great deal, since it's cheaper to spread them out. Both those books are 3.0; I forgot to ask if that's all right. Can you use 2nd party setting-specific material? (2nd party material is “officially licensed,” but not published by Wizards of the Coast. The same sort of deal Dragon magazine has that makes it “100% official content.” ) War of the lance has better forms of the masterwork quality that can reduce armor check penalty by up to 5 for proportionally higher cost. Races of the Wild has thistledown suit (not to be confused with thistledown padded armor). It can be worn under armor of certain types to reduce its ASF by -5%. It also increases its armor check penalty by 1. Some people say a githcraft mithral chain shirt worn over a thistledown suit has no armor check penalty because -2-1+3=0. However, since a thistledown suit is not a part of armor, but merely worn beneath it, I have trouble imagining a DM letting you apply its adjustments to the chain shirt's statistics before mithral's. So, you should expect this setup to have a -1 armor check penalty, due to mithral's “minimum 0” clause. Unless your speed is only 20 feet to start with, you'll lose at least 10 feet of speed from anything heavier than light armor. You'll want nothing heavier than a mithral breastplate. If you want to get technical, the tooth of Savnok, from Tome of Magic, allows you to move at full speed in any armor and has a 2,000 gp market price. It's a unique item though, so you can't just buy it. Even more technically (and much less usefully), Dungeon magazine 105 has an armor modification called ceremonial that removes speed penalties, cuts ASF in half, increases max dex bonus by 1, reduces armor check penalty by 2 and cuts weight in half, but it also cuts the AC bonus in half, so it's not very useful. The only thing I can think of that winds up with a larger armor bonus than a mithral breastplate is ceremonial thaalud stone armor (from Anauroch: the Empire of Shade), which comes out to +6 AC, +1 max dex bonus, -6 armor check penalty, 20% ASF, no speed penalty, and 90 pounds before other modifications. Unfortunately, it also comes out to 6,200 gp before other modifications, so I don't imagine you'll want to use it. |
| #9Apollo_TheronFeb 21, 2011 18:04:21 | Okay tell me if this is a good armor build. Note this isn't my build. Main Piece: Thistledown-padded Feycraft Mithril Shirt (+5 AC, +6 Dex, 0% ASC, -1 ACP) Masterwork Feycraft Light Wooden Shield (+1 AC) Masterwork Feycraft Chahar-Aina (+1 AC) Masterwork Feycraft Dastana (+1 AC) Total Cost: 3150 (+8 AC, +6 Max dex, 0% ASC, -1 ACP, 27 lbs.) |
| #10Maat_MonsFeb 21, 2011 19:07:29 | The first problem I see is that a fey craft mithral chain shirt over a thistledown suit still only has a +4 armor bonus, not +5. The second problem is I'm getting 3,903 gp for the cost, not 3,150 gp.
A darkwood buckler costs 205 gp, but it's inherently masterwork, so it's only +52 gp relative to the masterwork light wooden shield. You can use a bow or crossbow with no penalty or a two-handed weapon with a -1 penalty without taking off the buckler. A light shield requires you to take it off to use that hand for more than just holding something. Going in the other direction, you could use a githcraft heavy mithral shield for an extra +1 AC. That setup is pretty good, but you should still ask about the Dragon magazine material. Replacing the thistledown suit with the caster armor modification adds +150 gp to the price, but it removes that -1 armor check penalty. Replacing the feycraft armor template with the caster armor modification on the chahar-aina and dastana saves 200 gp. Naturally, the modifications that increase AC and max dex bonus are also beneficial. |

Nah I would rather just avoid most of it because people will later on bitch about it. Btw my gold limit is 4k for the armor. Can you wear padded armor under mithral chain shirt? That way the +4 and the +1 make the armor +5, or no? |
