My DM has been encouraging me to post a CO Diary, which did not sound like a whole lot of fun... but then I was on JJ's (Janus Jones, my DM's) Dragon Fire Adept (DFA from here on out) Handbook, which is amazing by the way, and I saw a link to Logic'Ninja's CO Diaries: DFA in Dark Sun. I really enjoyed reading the thread and was sad to hear it had to end. So I though I would have a go at it.

So here is my build for an 11th level DFA, I picked Human for the extra feet and we were given a choice between a point buy or rolling 4d6 and guaranteed one 18

I put my 18 into CON, 17 into CHA and 16 into DEX....I had a 14 INT and WIS and a 10 STR, but as a DFA who needs STR?

I wanted to focus on being a scary dragon like character so for my
LVL 1 feat: entangling exhalation
Bonus human feat: Dreadful Wrath (note that this feat only works when you attack, charge or cast a spell and technically using a breath weapon(BW from here on out) is not any of the above, but JJ made a house rule to allow BW for Dreadful Wrath, i mean if a BW is going to break your invisibility, it should count right?) Anyone within 20 feet of me needs to will save or be shaken for 1 minute
Lvl 1 Invocation: Endure Elements (makes allies immune to my breath)
2nd lvl Breath Effect (BE) Frost Breath
3rd lvl Invocation: Magical Insight (unlimited detect magic and identify =D)
3rd lvl feat: Draconic Aura Vigor (JJ house rule, that DFA have access to even PHB II draconic auras)
5th lvl BE: Slow
6th lvl feat: Frightful Presence, then at level 11 I retrained it for extra Invocation to get the invocation frightful presence which works against enemies with higher HD, DOES work with BW and can be used every round as a swift without enemies becoming immune to it and lasts 10 minutes
6th lvl Invocation: Humanoid shape (JJ house rule that BW works with humaniod shape as it is a class ability)
8th lvl Invocation: Voracious dispelling
9th lvl feat: entangling exhalation because I became a dragonborn and lost the bonus human feat, but gained another BW (opening metabreath feats)and +2 CON)
10th Lvl BE: Thunder breath
11th Lvl Invocation: Chilling Fog

That puts me pretty current to where I am now. Normally I walk around in Troglodyte form for the sicken effect, and when ever I use my BW I force two WILL saves for FEAR, one FORT save for sicken and one REF save for entangle. In my next post I will tell you why that rocks and let you know what equipment I have to enhance what I am doing.

Till then, Peace

You don't get the sicken effect from Troglodyte Form. Stench is an (Ex) special attack, which Alter Self doesn't give you.

I also don't really see any advantage to frost breath--between Fire and Thunder you have your damage needs covered; when you're Entangling them you don't really care if they save for half of half, so Thunder being a Fort save is almost irrelevant. Sicken Breath can let you give a -2 to stuff, most importantly saves, which stacks with the Frightful Presence invocation.

I have recently been looking at sicken breath as an option, I have played this character from LVL 1, so originally I took BE Frost breath so I could do more than just fire damage. It has come in handy more than once, often as a fire extinguisher, more than a damage form. Now that I have the breaths from my DragonBorn, it does seem like a waste. The main problem is battles rarely last long enough for me to hit them with sicken breath. I normally start battle with an entangle or slow breath for crowd control reasons, but I can see the benefits of starting with sickening breath to lower saves right from the start... (that is why i use the stench, but it is not guaranteed like the breath is) but already my breath saves are FORT or REF 24 and my frightful presence saves are WILL 27.... but sicken does not stack like fear effects, so currently I am still sticking to the troglodyte's stench, since I do not have to waste a round to blow a breath effect.

As to the troglodyte's sicken ability, I was under the impression that the Humanoid Shape Invocation was different than alter self. In the Dragon Magic book it states that "You can assume any humanoid form, as the change shape special ability (MM 306)" and the MM says that "the creature gains the natural weapons, movement modes and extraordinary special attacks to its new form" Troglodyte stench is an extraordinary ability. Still, it would be handy to have an automatic sicken effect, even if it only lasts 2 rounds for a failed save or 1 round for a successful Fort save.

Thanks for the post LN, glad to see you are still on the boards. I really enjoy your thread. Stay tuned for a posting of my last gaming session.

Peace,
BB
