| #1hovnarrJan 15, 2008 13:35:16 | Catching on to the recent (and great) trend of CO diaries, yours truly will be reporting from the Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil - a long term play by post that just started. The CO boards were involved in the party optimization, as you can see here. It didn't go exactly as planned, as one of the clerics in the would be "all cleric party" turned out a straight rogue, but I'm still hopeful for the survival of the group. The roster, in short: *Dwarf rogue (no particular theme or speciality) *Human cleric of Pelor - healing and turning focused (yours truly) *Human cleric of Heironeous - agile shield fighter and ordained champion wannabe *Elf dragonborn cloistered cleric of Io - "wizard" focused with DMM persist, divine gestures flaw (spell failure), spell and magic domains etc. Like the beginning of all great adventures, we're just starting out in the tavern, but I may be reporting here once per week or whenever something significant (from a CO standpoint) happens. You're free to input anything but plot spoilers, and I'll try to keep those to a minimum myself when describing fights and mechanics etc. If you want to check out the game as a whole, it's on this site. Thanks for reading. |

| #4tshernJan 15, 2008 14:26:27 | Isn't that Rogue a little out of place? |

| #6hovnarrJan 15, 2008 15:27:32 | Isn't that Rogue a little out of place? Ya think? Meh, you have to roll with the punches. We had this idea on the site once for an all-cleric party and I decided to put it to practice when this game was coming about. However, one of the players had his heart set on a rogue, so it was not to be. Anyway, the idea still works with 3 clerics + a rogue. From a flavor viewpoint, it was simply said that surrounding temples sent their best cannon fodder to Hommlet to investigate, and Olidammara's clergy chose to send a rogue rather than a cleric. Still, another theme or forte has emerged in this group, which is stamina. We have lots of stuff at our disposal that enable us to keep going like duracell bunnies through simpler encounters, which makes it easier to nova in the tough fights. *3 characters with primary strength including a rogue with SA means lots of limitless damage. *Rogue skills, hand of the mage, persistant spell, hat of disguise, social skills etc. provide many utility answers for little resources. *Touch of Healing feat means I can keep everyone with at least 50% hp, essentially for free. We'll see how it works out. I think the major power boost will come at level 6 with the feat and level 3 spell pick (we're using Spontaneous Divine Casters, UA variant) then. But even hitting 5th will be sweet for the Io priestess' Anyspell (Rope Trick = rest when we want). Thanks for the support so far. This is gonna be fun! ![]() |
| #7tshernJan 15, 2008 15:37:10 | By doing teamwork you can definitely go through pretty much anything. Recovering hitpoints, buffing and such should never become a problem with those characters. I wish you the best of luck and happy killings. |
| #8julian_delphikJan 15, 2008 15:39:27 | *Human cleric of Heironeous - agile shield fighter and ordained champion wannabe I know you didnt call me a wannabe :P |
| #9bofferJan 15, 2008 15:47:20 | you might consider that at least one of you choose Sacred Healing from Complete Divine at lv 6, as it make a good combo with Touch of Healing. |
| #10hovnarrJan 15, 2008 17:40:58 | It does, but there are better options I think. Mass lesser vigor does the same thing, is available at level 6, and could even be persisted if needed (making my touch of healing feat useless too - but then again, having it means being able to persist something else instead, like Prayer).I know you didnt call me a wannabe Well you are one still, but you get to enter your PrC at level 5, so techincally, I'll be a radiant servant of pelor wannabe longer than you'll be a ordained champion wannabe. Wawawa, it isn't fair :P |
| #11hovnarrMar 25, 2008 11:32:58 | Well, well, well. Progress in the PbP format is VERY slow, so I apologize for not updating this until now. In short... We gathered some info about the town and decided to go to the Moathouse. Two NPCs tagged along (good with extra cannon fodder hehe). We received warning of blue dragon sighting. It turns out it was not only CR6, but the DM hadn't updated it from 3.0 so it had a terrible hovering dust cloud shenanigans going on (despite being medium size and not having the hover feat). One of the NPCs got killed and the party got split in half. With some mighty healing, the "fighter-cleric", me and the other NPC managed to kill the dragon in its lair (safe from the dust cloud), using attacks, one DD spell and a Spiritual Weapon to pursue when it tried to escape. The victory came at a great price however - as it should with CR = ECL+2. After healing all to at least 50% hp (touch of healing - an energizer bunny superstar at this level), we went down into the celler and encountered two gnolls. Mage-cleric finally got some use for her Hold Persons. The fight was pretty much over before you could say "coup de grace". Going a bit further, we're now in the middle of fighting a Ghast, and the DM just hinted at it summoning reinforcements. I turned it though, and I'll use greater turning once the "reinforcements" arrive, moahaha. I'm not too worried, though we'll have to rest eventually before we run out of spells of course. Also, it turns out that the rogue player (whose PC seem to hover around 1 hp all the time despite my best healing efforts, and is now paralyzed in front of the Ghast to boot) has left, so another player is joining. He'll be playing a "legolas-cleric" - basically a cleric archer with Air domain for some extra flavor and tech. To handle traps, he'll be using Planar Touchstone (kobold) and also the awesome Divine Insight spell. It will be a significant capabilities boost for the party both in and out of combat, compared to the rogue. So far, the only disappointment has been the vague divinations that our Heironous champion has received (using Augury etc). I hope they'll give more info in the future and help us make better decisions more readily. Stay tuned to our exploration of the moathouse dungeon and ask away if you want more details on anything. All advice is very welcome, as long as it doesn't include plot spoilers. |
