| #1tigroudoudouJan 30, 2009 5:26:42 | Hello every body. I want to play a Paladin/Binder (because of the background). Can some body help me to build something with that? Thank you. PS: please excuse my English mistake, I'm French. |
| #2jameswilliamogleJan 30, 2009 7:06:39 | What books can you use besides Tome of Magic and the Player's Handbook? Also, can you (or will you) use the "Heterodoxy and Heresy" variant from Tome of Magic? I recomend avoiding it, personally. There's a lot of Alternative Class Features for the Paladin which can dictate a lot of what you can do. Besides that, I have the "Consolidated Binder Handbook" in my signature which will have a lot of options for the Binder portion. Likewise, there's a fairly new "Paladin Handbook" around here, somewhere. Also, what kind of style Paladin are you looking for? Do you want to focus on charge attacks (I recomend this as its fairly easy to optimize)? Do you want to play to your natural attacks (and be somewhat like a Totemist)? Or are you looking to play an atypical character that doesn't rely on getting into combat at all, but instead has weird "random" abilities that are all pretty good (this is also fairly easy to do)? Also, what kind of campaign do you play? Hack-n-Slash? Do you know what kind of enemies you'll be facing? What is the rest of the party composition? How's your mother doing? You have tons of options with a Binder, but feat-wise, its easiest to pick one of the above paths and run with it. Your feats don't really dictate what you'll be doing all the time, though. Regardless of which route you choose, I recomend taking the Knight of the Sacred Seal prestige class in Tome of Magic, as you lose one feat and gain a ton. |

I recomend avoiding it, personally. I can use almost all books, there is no specifique restriction, except that it must be an officcial book. I don't know the "Heterodoxy and Heresy" variant, so I think that I don't use it... For the paladin class, I just want at least to be a human "Paladin of freedom" without mount (background). For the moment I don't realy know nether what kind of campaign we will play nor the enemies we'll facing. the rest of the party is a Halfelin warmage (specialised on fire) and a ranger/shadowcaster (favored enemy : Demons), so I'll be the "fighter" of the party. PS : My mother does very well thank you! :D |
| #4jameswilliamogleJan 30, 2009 10:22:07 | I don't like the Aura that Paladin's of Freedom get. Likewise, Knight of the Sacred Seal has to be Lawful, and its worth changing the backstory, imo, if you can be the Lawful Good standard Paladin... OK, so I think I'd do: Paladin 3 / Binder 4 / Knight of the Sacred Seal 5 / something. Alternatively, for the Paladin "feel" but with way more power: Cleric 2 / Binder 1 / Anima Mage 10 (using the adaptation section of the Anima Mage to apply to Divine magic) / Tenebrous Apostate 5 / Contemplative 2 This gives you 18 Cleric spellcasting levels and 16 Binder levels. Only 2 required feats: Improved Binding and any metamagic (I recomend getting Extend Spell so that you can get Persistant Spell), plus you have to worship Tenebrous. Realize that you could play your Cleric just as piously as a Paladin (ie, in roleplaying, there's little difference). You really didn't say how you want to fight. That'll affect your feat choices. |
| #5tigroudoudouJan 30, 2009 12:29:48 | In fact I alreday posses à character Binder3/Freedom paladin 2 (I can discard the Paldin class until I play it, but it feets very well with my back ground). For the fight, I should be the "heavy fighter" of the party, I would like to be a "cleaver fighter" not the mindless that run directly to the ennemies. And also, we are a party of good aligned people. |
| #6jameswilliamogleJan 30, 2009 13:49:04 | Tenebrous Apostates don't have to be evil... but anyways... I'm not sure what "cleaver fighter" means. Is this the same as "tanking"? Anyways... Binder 5 / Paladin of Freedom 15 Use the Underdark Knight Paladin Alternate Class Feature Feats 1,b Improved Binding, Power Attack 3 open 6 Divine Vigor 9 Battle Blessing 12 Awesome Smite 15 Leap Attack 18 open The main thing here is to use either Andras to fuel your Awesome Smite ability or Tenebrous to fuel Divine Vigor. To be honest, the Binder levels just water it down. |
| #7surrealJan 30, 2009 13:56:54 | Alternatively, for the Paladin "feel" but with way more power: I would be tempted to drop Contemplative for Prestige Paladin. |
| #8tigroudoudouJan 30, 2009 16:29:49 | You're right, I'm not clear in what I want... ![]() So after some reflection, I want to have a Tank (a character which can be the "shield" of the party). If possible, I would like to have access to the highest vestige as possible (as your “cleric build”) When I say that we are a party of quite good characters, it's because our characters are mush close to life than death (Tenebrous). I've spoken with my DM and he said me that we will play a campaign of "good heroes that save the world from some like of demons" Sorry if I'm boring... :P PS: can you note from what book you take the build elements, because I have some difficulties to found them. |
| #9jameswilliamogleJan 30, 2009 16:35:28 | Paladin 2 / Binder 18 works just fine. Alternatively, you could just play a Binder 20 and "call" him a Paladin, instead. There is an online vestige and prestige class which works very similarly to Tenebrous Apostate, but uses Wee Jas instead (its also a better vestige). Are you interested in that? Binder (tanks) that emulate Paladins: use Savnok, for full-plate armor use Andras, for smite attacks and the warhorse For feats, I haven't much advice, although Shield Proficiency can be taken as a bonus feat or gained via Haagenti. From your party composition, though, I'd go for maximum "damage per round" feats. These mainly include Power Attack, Improved Bull Rush, Shocktrooper (Complete Warrior), and Leap Attack (Complete Adventurer). The main thing is to use Shocktrooper's ability to charge and apply all attack penalties to your AC instead of your attack modifier, combining with Leap Attack to increase the damage along the way. This combines VERY well with pounce, which you can get through Chupoclops, and pounce also combines very well with natural attacks (which, again, several vestiges grant). The AC penalty can be mitigated with several vestiges with miss chances (Orthos is the best of these, though Otiax and Tenebrous work well before that). And again, this is standard info available from the Consolidated Binder Handbook in my sig. If you want my honest advice, your most powerful character will be the Cleric / Binder build above. The next strongest will be a fairly normal Binder / Knight of the Sacred Seal. After that, the Paladin / Binder combinations. Tank is not generally the same as the Pouncer idea above... you end up trying to get into fights. I'm not that good at building tanks, mainly b/c I've always thought that a good offense >> a good defense. |
| #10tigroudoudouJan 30, 2009 16:43:52 | I'll try to speak with my DM this week-end to have more information about his campaign. Then I'll be able to explain what I want and what I can do. |
| #11tigroudoudouFeb 04, 2009 2:47:50 | So I spoke with my DM, and I've a bad new: There's no prestige class in his world for the moment... (We’ll play in a homemade world). So thank you for your help, I think that I'll just be binder. Otherwise, I've a question: Can I translate your binder's guide in French and post it in a French forum? (I'll quote your original post of course) Thank you. |
