| #1alastarApr 21, 2008 0:22:03 | Hello people. I just watched predator 1 and 2 and avp 1 and 2 and I thought: hey, what would be the D&D equivalent of THE PREDATOR! And then I fell kinda short cause I don't know any race that matches. What we know he DOES: Kick ass Throw javelins Throw sawed disks Shoot beams of bluish light from his shoulder Has some kind of f***** up vision thing Has a very large assortment of knives Can cloak himself at will Good armor Great Strenght Throw nets What we know he DOES NOT do: Suck wash cars Seriously, any basis of a build would be fun, and everyone can chip in if they want. I thought maybe something like: Fighter 2/Barb 2/Warblade 4/Master Thrower 2/Bloodstorm Blade 4/Warblade +6 Or something like that. Maybe artificier levels to duplicate the gadgets. Maybe fighter 6 with dungeoncrasher cause he DOES tend to throw things into walls and making that kill them. He also appears to do that a lot using his javelins, witch would work well with bloodstorm blade. Any input is nice Thanks a lot |
| #2bluedsteelApr 21, 2008 0:28:30 | Seems like he mostly just needs proficiencies, since a lot of the weird stuff can be legitimately duplicated using items. Make him a half-minotaur for the strength, large size stuff.:D |
| #3darksamuariApr 21, 2008 0:40:07 | Alright, lets see what we can do here... First, I think these guys make the perfect race for the Yautija. Second, if we are going gestalt then Ranger/Artificer may be the best for pure simplicity. If not I'd still say go towards Artificer with Ranger & Barbarian (UA non-rage variant) drips and the feat guerrilla warrior out of Heroes of Battle. |
| #4amadithegreatApr 21, 2008 2:28:14 | What we know he DOES: So he's a binder effectively, all you need to do is to buy a crapton of knives and get proficient with net. |
| #5alastarApr 21, 2008 7:19:39 | Neraphim is a good call, could we plug it a template so that they're naturally stronger and bigger. The thing is, they're about 7 feet tall, not quite large, but it would be wicked if they could have something like powerful build. And i just thought of something. Psionics. That would replicate the gun pretty well, and could help a lot. Maybe a half giant, then add a template to mess up it's face and boost it's strenght |
| #6womblehunterApr 21, 2008 9:10:12 | strenght STOP SAYING THAT :D |
| #7alastarApr 21, 2008 12:03:55 | well sor-ry!!! Ok so i think i got something: I'm away from books right now, i'll edit when i get home if i'm missing something. Half Giant Fighter 6 (Dungeon Crasher)/Warblade 2/Master Thrower 2/Bloodstorm Blade 4/Wilder 4/Warblade +2 abilities (42 point buy, he's PREDATOR) STR: 34 (+5 book, +5 levels, +6 enhancement, +2 racial) Dex: 18 (+6 enhancement, -2 racial) Con: 24 (+6 enhancement, +2 racial) Int: 18 (+6 enhancement) Wis: 16 (+6 enhancement) Cha: 24 (+6 enhancement, +2 book) BAB: 19 Power points: 33 Psionic Powers: Energy Ray, Chameleon, Vigor Maneuvers: TBD Feats: Must have: Knockback Power Attack Practiced Manifester x2 This is a nice start i think, someone care to add? My diner break is over. So yeah his ''gun'' would be his energy missile power, wich would have a visual manifestation of going from his shoulder plate to the ennemy. He will use fire on it, but it will be ''blue'' fire. Due to his low power points, he will carry several pp storing items on himself, wich we will call energy cells. With a wild surge, he can reach 14d6 +14 on his ''gun'' attack, not too shabby if you ask me. He will be wielding a large shuriken (the bladesaw thing) some large javelins (the spear) Some large daggers and some large bladed gauntlets (you know what i mean) Anyone has any idea for the net?? Maybe i should find a way to fit in 2 monk levels instead of those last 2 warblade levels, and get him improved grapple, and then superior unarmed strike, just so we can say he truly does ROFL PWN with just his fists, as he does in the movies sometimes. Being large with that concept has it's advantages. And he would be able to flurry with his large shuriken. Maybe get in some TWF too. He starts most fights by firing with his gun, than starts throwing his shurikens around, keeping the ennemy (ies) from reaching him. If they do he pounds on them till they die. |
| #8dawnmorApr 21, 2008 15:05:58 | That is a very good question Alaster I been asking myself the samr thing for quite some time about the Predator. I think your on the right track personally, however as for race, I think he wouldnt be Feral cuz they come off quite intelligent in the movies and from what I think come off honorable as well. As for race, I think the closest thing you can get is a Lizardfolk, Not sure on Templates though, maybe Draconic. Grab EWP Nets. As for the Vision thing for his helmet, I believe he should have Lowlight, Xray, thermal, darkvision, infrared DND equivelents to his helmet ![]() |
| #9atomickitkatApr 21, 2008 21:22:26 | They have natural UV(?) vision. Charisma could certainly be a dump stat for them(Far as I know, only the highest ranking ones have any real sorts of Charisma.) For the face, go Willing Deformity/Deformity: Face? Don't have to care much about the Evil requirement on that.:P The main difficulty that I see is that the Predator is at least a triple threat. He's a grappler, blaster, and assassin all rolled into one. |
| #10maeglin_dubhApr 21, 2008 21:42:41 | First thing I thought of was Warlock, with See the Unseen for the vision, I think there's another Invocation that would grant invisibility, but I'm AFB; and of course Eldritch Blast for the gun. Only a dip, of course, since they would lack the BAB and weapon proficiencies needed. |
| #11aftercrescentApr 21, 2008 21:48:12 | Predators are clearly gestalt. |
| #12alastarApr 21, 2008 21:50:51 | Predators are clearly gestalt. Let's pretend they're not and work around that ![]() |
| #13PwntatochipApr 21, 2008 22:17:48 | as far as his shoulder gun is concerned. isn't there an animigus(artificer golem thingy) that is a self firing crossbow. You could take 1, permanency a shrink on it, and the balance check to stay on your shoulder is very low so it can sit up there, and chuck bolts at all who offend you. you could even have bolts of with silver and cold iron heads for certain creatures, and since the bolts return to a NON shrunken size after firing you could friggin pike people to walls with it. I think the description on em talked about them being able to sit on your shoulder. |
| #14NCOApr 21, 2008 22:19:39 | I always thought of a D&D Predator as more of a Rogue/Ranger that used a lot of powerful magic wands / wondrous items via UMD. You know - Ring of Invisibility, Wand of , etc. As for race... you'd need something with enough of a strength bonus to allow an average member of the species to fling something human sized with little difficulty. At the same time, they're only about 7 feet tall, so they would still be medium sized. Powerful build would probably fit, though. They see infrared naturally, distinguishing by heat levels, and have to have those helmets if they want to see "normally". If you go by the comics, they're also quicker and more agile than humans, even though this isn't evidenced in the movies (yay bulky costumes). I would say you could template a Goliath (Half Minotaur?) to resemble a movie-style Predator. If you want the comics version, I don't know. The level adjust would be large, though, probably too large to be practical. |
| #15andyjamesApr 21, 2008 22:21:36 | Is there a Dire Spear running around somewhere in one of the books? That would be great for the javelin thing. As for the disc, think Chakram That one exists, I'm pretty sure... |
| #16alastarApr 21, 2008 22:24:41 | Yeah chakram is what i thought, but then i thought, hey, why not a large shuriken so he can flurry of blow it, and it fits with powerful build. |
| #17maeglin_dubhApr 21, 2008 22:25:58 | Dwarven Warspear, a double-ended spear. |
| #18surrealApr 22, 2008 0:01:03 | In terms of race, Locathah or Sahuagin sort of have the face, though perhaps too much fin. |
| #19atomickitkatApr 22, 2008 10:18:36 | Yeah chakram is what i thought, but then i thought, hey, why not a large shuriken so he can flurry of blow it, and it fits with powerful build. Why flurry? Chackram Ricochet is the way to go.:P |
| #20alastarApr 22, 2008 11:33:55 | Your ideas interest me, and i wish to learn more. P.S: Every time I read your name, i keep thinking about the milf in ''wedding crashers'' in the following pass: Mom: Call me kat John: Ok kat.. Mom: Call me.... Kittykat John: ok..... kittykat. I just had to say it. Right now I need a template to add to half giant to make it more predatoresque, ideally something that doesnt change size and grants soem facial disfiguration. I'm gonna look into maneuvers tonight too. But for now i believe my dungeon crasher bloodstorm blade thrower is a good way to go. This of course will be MY version, i believe that warlock is a WONDERFUL adjustment, but it lacks the kind of punch i need this to have (plan to set 1-2 of them on my players one day, just gonna keep it in bank) so i'm gonna toy around with the wilder version for the gun. I'll post something final tonight most probably. Maybe Pseudonatural Half Giant? You guys feel free to post your builds too!! I wanna here more about the chakram ricochet! |
| #21atomickitkatApr 22, 2008 11:51:19 | Half Giant, Willing Deformity, Deformity: Tall, Deformity: Face, then possibly something similar to Large and In Charge, where you can push opponents back to the limit of your Reach(should simulate the Predator being able to stagger Medium opponents back a few steps), which has been increased by Deformity: Tall. Inhuman Reach would give you another 5' of Reach, but that's another 2 Feats. Possibly Stand Still/Gauntlets of Clouting to punch them back out of reach. Chackrum Ricochet is from Champions of Ruin. Lets you bounce it off to another target within like 15' of the first, at a penalty, I think. Similar to the Boomerang Ricochet from ECS, from what I heard. |
| #22tweedledopeApr 22, 2008 12:56:00 | As far as stats go, I would base him around the Half Ogre because he is over 7' tall and is a total hoss... |
| #23darksamuariApr 22, 2008 17:21:56 | How about this? The Hunter Male Neraph, 11th-Level Artificer/2nd-Level Ranger/2nd-Level Fighter Size/Type: Medium Outsider Hit Dice: 8d6+1, 2d10+1 (78 hp) Initiative: +2 Speed: 30 ft. Tonight/tomorrow I will hopefully equip him with all of the appropriate gear. But as of right now, what do you guys think? |
| #24atomickitkatApr 22, 2008 19:44:22 | Well, offhand, it's "Guerilla Warrior" unless you're a Hadozee, and he seems to have a lot of Craft ranks(at least 4 to 5 each? Unless those are just the base ranks, in which case I'd drop them down to 5 each in Crafts and put those in Intimidate). ![]() |
| #25alastarApr 22, 2008 21:31:12 | It lacks a certain punch, but it's a good representation. Good job. |
| #26NCOApr 22, 2008 23:14:43 | It seriously depends on how much you want to "internalize" all of the features they use in the movies. Half-Giant is really only a good way to represent a Predator if you're insisting that shoulder-cannon be changed into some kind of natural mental ability as opposed to a mounted wand. Goliaths are closer mechanically I think with their standing leap, tendency to be competitive, climbing bonus, etc. If there were a way to make them stronger, more dextrous, and uglier, they'd be perfect. Bladed Gauntlets, Chakrams, Spears, and Daggers exist within the game already as direct parallels. His camouflage is easily represented by any item that grants invisibility or hide in plain sight. I'm sure there's a helm/mask that grants the wearer some form of exotic vision(s). The cannon is likely best represented as a wand or staff with the appropriate blasting capability. Class-wise, Artificer is not the way to go, simply because the warriors that use the wands aren't the inventors or creators of said wands. ToB classes will work fine if he's some kind of BBEG they'll be forced to fight face to face, but really, they should be at least part Ranger. I envision in a campaign with a Predator as an antagonist that he would be a very stealthy skill monkey. He'd set traps, draw them apart, and snipe them from far away (what's that feat that allows you to hide as a free/swift/move action after a successful ranged attack?). He'd be incredibly frustrating for players to hunt down or fight, because he's fast, smart, and has some serious terrain advantage with their ability to jump and climb. Just my 2 cents. EDIT: Half-minotaur would be perfect on the Goliath base form (grants Scent, Darkvision, and Track feat, which are all perfect) if it didn't increase the creature's size. Coincidentally, Half-Troll might be exactly what we're looking for. Gives many of the same abilities, easily described as looking like a Predator might with a few deformities, doesn't increase size. Just has a huge LA (on a Goliath, a total of +5). |
| #27darksamuariApr 23, 2008 1:26:35 | It lacks a certain punch, but it's a good representation. Gestalt, it needs gestalt masta!!! Stuff That's where the beauty of interpretation comes in! YAY!!! |
| #28alastarApr 23, 2008 6:19:30 | Hmmm eye opening. For the mask i would say a crystal mask of true vision. Maybe a Goliath over a half giant, but with the willing deformity's mentioned above. The fact that he is not a ranger in no way restricts the fact that he can have hide as a class skill and boost it. The reason why I don't see him as a ranger is because mechanically it gives him nothing he can't easily gain throught another way. |
| #29shigunaruApr 23, 2008 9:54:23 | What about a gestalt incarnate//ranger? let's see... - Great skill set for a hunter. - Huge bonuses to those skill checks. - Full BaB - A 9d6 "shoulder cannon" dissolving spittle - Concealment via Fellmist Robe (which I assume would go away with water, and strangely that's a plus in this build :D) - With a totemist 2 level dip we can shape and bind sphinx claws. - The soulsight feat seem exactly what a predator has... I'll work on a build and post it soon. EDIT: Soulsight is a no go, it can detect nonliving creatures too, which while advantageus is not a predator feature, and is a move action to activate to boot ![]() |
| #30shigunaruApr 23, 2008 12:10:03 | I had a huge post but teh intarweb failed me greatly...![]() Here is the TL: DR version: LN Goliath (LA bought off) Ranger 15*/Barbarian 2/Horizon Walker 5//Law Incarnate 18/Totemist 2 *Spiritual Guide and Champion of the Wild variants from CC. Need help with feats, I have Power Attack and Bonus Essentia nailed down tho . Maybe Shape Soulmeld for Mauling Gauntlets too.HW Terrains: Forest, Hill, Mountain, Plain, Marsh. Favourite Soulmelds (Need more of this...): - Sphinx Claws (Totem), binded for claws. - Dissolving Spittle (Throat), binded or not for the shoulder cannon. - Fellmist Robe (Soul) for concealment at distance OR Incarnate Avatar (Soul) for +hit and the look (Marut is basically a golden armor :D) - Worg Pelt (Hands), Acrobat Boots (Feet), etc... for skill boosters. - Yrtak Mask (Brow) for kickass look and bonus to listen too. - Spellward Shirt (Hearth) binded or not. We don't know if P is resiliant to magic, but I bet he is :D What else? Final Thoughts: Full BaB, great skills and skill boosters, fast movement, rage (you have seen the first movie right? :D), meldshaping. The crunch is good. A lawfull hunter who gives his preys a chance, Goliath for powerful build and medium size, plus muntain movement which is pretty sweet, and all the melds above. yep, fluff is good too. Someone else want to optimize on this basis? |
| #31dawnmorApr 23, 2008 13:13:50 | I think a Lizardfolk with Draconic, maybe half ogre tossed in?, that will give you a screwed up face, alot of str, you can go dreadlocks with your hair, gives you a reptile look. Maybe hes a Warblade?, I remember in all the movies that the Predator was of a different size and look each time, so I dont see why they cant have different sized Predators in DND. Or a Gigantic Lizardfolk who had a huge growth spurt ?, true youll get a tail but its ok The Aliens had tails and so did the Hybrid in AVP 2 . He was a mix of Alien and Predator DNA from the looks of it.You may consider taking that one PrC I think its called WARHULK? from Miniature's handbook, grats a +2 to str each lvl ? Could be fun? Go Warblade, grab Bloodstorm PRC for awhile, grab some diamond mind stuff. Chakrum, double spear that retracts and such, I only saw 1 dagger on each Predator at the time. But seriously, if I was to make a Predator I would definately go Lizardfolk , then grab increase its str. |
