As a conjurer, I decided to become an Incantatrix because they're standard. I'm one to favor CC and buffs in that order.

The Incantatrix is a metamagic specialist, though. Conjurers rarely use metamagic for crowd control, though Sculpt Spell and Quicken Spell are delicious. The Incantatrix's best feature for you, besides being able to honestly say you're one, is Metamagic Effect.

You can apply Sculpt Spell to clouds and battlefield control spells in play: You can Sculpt a grease to increase its area. You can Sculpt a solid fog to exclude allies. (Unfortunately, you can't Sculpt wall spells, so no ball shapes from a wall of force, but you can Extend them!)

Then again, Mage of the Arcane Order (MAO) has a spiffy spellpool which allows slight versatility. From my understanding, I could call spells from banned schools in general slots and maybe even specialist slots. (If so, a Focused Conjurer/MAO/Incantatrix can qualify for Archmage!) With that feat which allows me HD+4 points in Knowledge (arcana), I could even enter at level 5!

MAO's viability depends largely on spellpool access. By default, only PHB spells are available and you're stuck with drawing a spell or 4 per day. At least you can repay spellpool debt with level 1 slots.

How effectively can we combine them?
Human or Strongheart Halfling, 2 Flaws
Doubly-Flawed Human or Strongheart Halfling
Martial Conjurer1: [Abrupt Jaunt], Cloudy Conjuration, Cooperative Spell, Extend Spell, [Improved Initiative], Spell Focus: Conjuration
Conjurer3: Feat that grants Knowledge (arcana) ranks equal to HD+4
Master Conjurer1: [Skill Focus: Spellcraft]
Mage of the Arcane Order1: [Spellpool I]
MAO2: Iron Will, [Sculpt Spell]
Incantatrix1: [Persistent Spell]
Incantatrix2: [Cooperative Metamagic]
Incantatrix3: [Metamagic Effect], Spell Focus: Transmutation
MAO3
MAO4: [Spellpool II]
MAO5: Craft Contingent Spell
MAO6
Archmage1: [Mastery of Shaping]
Archmage2: [Arcane Reach OR Spell Power], Metamagic Focus: Conjuration
MAO7: [Spellpool III]
Incantatrix4: [Chain Spell]
Incantatrix5: Magic Artisan: Craft Contingent Spell
Incantatrix6
Incantatrix7: [Instant Metamagic], [Quicken Spell]

I think your final conclusion is correct. MotAO is about versatility on your spell list. Incantatrix is about reducing spell list versatility for greater power on those fewer spells.

Both PrC's are good ones (Incantatrix is generally considered stronger) - but they are strengthening opposing values.

At least conjurers are rarely short spiffy feats or PrCs!

A rich guy eating at a McDonald's is still a rich guy ...

I actually don't like MotAO for wizards much. I can see some value for focused specialists but really you have a good 5 schools already (and that's typically plenty). The biggest benefit is to provide some spontaneity to a wizard.

Wall of force is an evocation spell anyway, which you've likely banned in a focused specialist. Still available at arcane caster level 10 if you have spellpool II.

Spellpool's full round prep action makes it less useful in combat. Of course, if you need it, you might really, REALLY need it. Under normal circumstances, its best utility is just that: utility. The ability to dig down and come up with that obscure spell that's made to order to overcome some unexpected obstacle.

The Player's Handbook has a bunch of the most-loved wizard spells, so that's not a huge drawback, but notice it also gives you the option of talking your DM into other spells being available. I wouldn't nickel and dime them on that. I'd push for the whole SPC enchilada.

49500gp or Craft Scepter as 9th level feat; 1980xp and 24,750gp later, you have a Scepter of Rary's Arcane Conversion and can change spells out on the fly 50 times. Retrain as necessary, or build more scepters. Nothing like basically turning a wizard into a Sorc for 25-50 G's.

vs.

18,000gp to purchase the amulet, or Craft Wondrous Item, 720xp, and 9000gp for 1/day, as long as you own it (and it takes an item slot).

shrug, they both have their advantages. The amulet has infinite charges and is much cheaper, and you don't need to wear it all the time, you can just put it on when you want to change out a spell.

also I would much rather have the craft wondrous item feat than craft scepter

Christopher: What sort of self-respecting conjurer doesn't prep teleport?

Hey, I'm trying to come up with a reason a conjurer might want MotAO. Didn't prep ENOUGH teleports?

I generally don't like MotAO. It's a nifty just-in-case ability. I'm not sure it's better as a PrC than, say, Summon Monster (N) ... which if you look around can probably get you 90% of what you need and has less limits PLUS doesn't waste PrC levels.

Christopher: What sort of self-respecting conjurer doesn't prep teleport?

One that has more than one method to cast it spontaneously?

One that has it as an Su or Sp?

One that has a Greater Version memmed?

One that has 8 or 9 Gemjumps laying around?

One that's adventuring in an area where teleport doesn't work/is bad for your health?

Have you considered the Malconvoker? I'd love to make one some time. Very good class features costing just 1 CL.

Flooding the place with summons makes me feel like Diablo in the 1st video of Diablo 2 :p
