Core only wizard help

I'm sorry if this has been posted before, but I read through the links and the first few pages and didn't see anything on this (most of the core only threads discussed druids in depth and nothing else).

I am joining a core only game, and am relatively new to D&D, though I have been reading about and plotting all kinds of battlefield control etc. that is possible as a wizard.

I would appreciate some help developing an ideal wizard build for a core only game where the rest of the party consists of a rogue, fighter, and druid. I would prefer to focus on battlefield control, but am open to any suggestions.

Right now I'm thinking of playing a conjurer with evocation and necromancy banned (necro despite having ray of enfeeblement and other debuffs just doesn't fly well with a mostly good party, and it was down to that or enchantment).

The campaign will start with level 3 characters. Thank you all for your help, and let me know if I left something out of my initial post.

One thing I'll say is that the conjurer gets what I consider to be the best 2nd-level core spell. Actually, it's on the top four spells of level 1-6, I'd say, really.

Glitterdust.

Will save or be blinded, with a small area effect. Lots and lots and lots of the guys you face will not make that save. Better yet, it's not mind affecting, so you can use it on undeads and stuff. It's an amazingly good spell.

Play a wizard, cast lots and lots of glitterdust. My non-core wizard uses lots of 2nd-level slots for glitterdust and lots of 3rd-level slots for sculpted glitterdust (only thing better than one 10' square is four 10' squares!)
