Looking over the craft rules it seems like it takes an arbitrarily long time to craft your own weapons with little benefit over the long term. I have an idea in my head for a fighter build who crafts most of his own weapons. Are there any feats, prc, or multi class options able to create a combat capable weaponsmith???

Craft caps out at masterwork. You realistically need magic to get any real oomph past level 3 or so. (Given how the best real-world weaponsmiths in history would have been 3rd to 5th level, this should put it in perspective.)

Some prestige classes, such as Kensai, or the base class OA samurai, allow you to awaken magic in your weapon without being magical yourself. Founding a legacy weapon also works like this. These are of questionable overall utility.

Thanks for the plug, Tempest!

Battlesmith is the only way to do a totally mundane crafter of magical weapons & armor, and it's not as good as it could be. It's not bad; but it's not that good, either. Interesting variants would be elves (longsword or long bow instead of hammer) and duergar (psionic instead of magic).
