Blacksmithing is iron and steel, for making utilitarian items.  Metalsmithing, I would think, is more the silver/goldsmithing type of artistry.

Interestingly, neither "metalsmithing" nor "whitesmithing" is listed amongst the example crafts given in the PHB.

Are pottery and basketweaving?  Because if not, they must not exist, right?  C'mon, Slagger; you know better than that.

Basketweaving and pottery are both listed, but I noted the absence metalsmithing and whitesmithing in particular since their blacksmithing counterpart is present.

It's not that their absence means they can't exist, it's just interesting to see which examples they chose.

If I'm not mistaken a metalsmith was a more general term used to refer to various applications of smithing, where as a black smith specifically worked with iron and steel applications of the craft. A metalsmith could have been anything from a crafter of tin items, to gold, silver, an armor smith, or weapons smith ect. In order to keep things sensible I generally refer to anything outside of the basic weapon crafts that revolves around mettle as craft metal working so I don’t have to make a call on whether or not a player can make a ornate gold cup with the skill but not the same design in silver because he didn’t invest in both craft gold smithing and craft silver smithing.
