| #1dumah87Feb 21, 2009 10:00:43 | Hi guys recently we organized a PvP tournament and we start to discuss how the arena should be and other various particulars such as the distance of the 2 Players, the terrain, buffs and other.... i.e. a friend of mine is a frenzied berserk (charger build)assert that the starting distance is 30 feet, smooth terrain and no buff except for spells that last for 1h/level.....pretty unfair, isn't??? ![]() another friends of mine plays a cleric and would have the time for buffinghimself, at least 5 spells and the starting distance over 100 feet and possibly above a tree.... Given that I'm the arbiter, and I've been charged to create the arena, I ask your help to satisfy each player! I apologize if my English language is uncorrect. Thank you all ![]() |

What level are the characters in the tournament? It can influence the advice for an effective arena. |

| #4innabinderFeb 21, 2009 10:31:29 | At 20th level, the arena layout should be almost irrelevant to the Cleric. Divine Metamagic should allow him to be buffed 24/7. He has access to spells allowing him to Gate in a Solar or stop time. He should have no trouble winning initiative, which means the Frenzied Berserker should be dead before he gets a turn. |

What you say it's true, at the higher levels the spellcasters can beat near every fighter, can teleport in everyplace every time. But in this tournament the things are little different: first, there are some banned spells (Avasculate, Shivering Touch, OTTO's I.D., Stun ray, and others...futhermore, gate a creature is not like play P0kemon, is not just summon, you have to contract a pact with the creature and given that a Solar is not a mindless creature, he(or she? :D ) could dislike the idea of fight just for your request....it's not easy. Second, character are powered with powerful item to keep the fight among every character (if possible) i.e. Rogue with a Rod of Time Stop, Monk with boots of inconstat location, Berserk with a Buttres of time armor.... It's a tournament every character shoul be able to take part of it. |

Shape of Arena (Circle, Square, Cross, I dunno) 3. Starting Positions (Maybe 30ft to 100ft away, must be placed symmetrically) 4. Height of Arena (From given range of say.... 20ft to 400ft) 5. Degree of Buffing//Prep Time Then: Obstacles Loser places a solid block or pit on the map; another block or pit is then placed on the symmetrically opposite point of the map. Winner places, etc. Repeat twice, then loser decides if he wants to continue placing, if he does the he places one, else stop process. Winner decides the same and alternate till one decides to stop. |

I'm not familiar with these items. I can imagine the first one, but the latter two are not clear to me. Were these just hypothetical examples, or do they exist somewhere? --ShriekingDrake |
| #9carnivoreFeb 24, 2009 4:34:36 | i would suggest this: Arena size: 1000' x 1000' Square, with allowance for Flying characters to fly @ 100' above ground... no higher start locations: there would be 8 start locations, one in each corner, and one in the center of each side of the square. no start location has Line of Sight to any other start location. Terrain: irregular boulders blocking Line of Sight at ranges greater than 60', these can give Cover, Concealment, even Total Cover and Total Concealment above these ranges. Flying creatures are limited to 100' Line of Sight vs Ground Creatures... unlimited vs Flying Creatures Obstacles: random Traps, and obstacles(open Pits with spikes, Acid Pools, Dispelling Screens, Antimagic fields, etc.. even hazards for Flying creatures(invisible Acid Fog Clouds at various heights, or Antimagic Fields/Dispelling Screens at various heights)) Planar Travel not allowed... leaving the arena means Forfeit. Teleport or Dimension Door or Shadow transport or any Means of Instant Transport are allowed , but only for Instant Transport to another part of the Arena(even though some of these rely on movement thru other Planes) No Buffing before entry to the Arena .... buff while you are looking for your Opponent this makes each entry search out and find the other, and contend with the hazards of the Arena. this allows for Ambushes, Charging, Sneak Attacking, Death Attacks, etc... if the characters can do them :D |

| #11carnivoreFeb 24, 2009 5:50:04 | are monster races allowed? :D |
| #12dumah87Feb 24, 2009 5:50:29 | i would suggest this: Carnivrore...you're always my favourite:D |
| #13dumah87Feb 24, 2009 5:52:07 | are monster races allowed? NO monster, max LA allowed is +2 (Drow) |
| #14oprickFeb 24, 2009 7:07:28 | consider varying the material of the arena. floor is dirt/sand/wooden planks/stone/grass/metal. this will mitigate the advantage of burrowinging spring attackers and the strategy brought to you by phaedrusxy for his level 10 MoS, and spread the advantage for specific contingencies, such as being in the presence of a forest, or having loose sand to blind opponents, or ice to fuel frostfell buffs conversely, invent some material which is unsucceptible to stone shape, transmute rock to mud, move earth, heat metal, &c. i agree that buffing should be done in the ring. unless these are existing characters, they will be tailor built for the ring, and the celerity and DMM quicken/persist that that entials an iteresting option is a spherical arena, with its own 'gravity' on which the opponents start at opposite poles. clever maneuvering can block line of sight from flying creatures, and burrowing becomes very useful. remember, that you're there to have fun as well, and not be an umpire. think of a fun videogame with arena fighting, like super smash brothers, and be creative about your role in this. lava could rise and fall with a random dice roll. lightning may strike randomly, there might be illusory pits, runecircles, rain, &c. |

| #16hogarthFeb 24, 2009 8:17:15 | The Core Coliseum board has given this quite a bit of thought over the years. The way they do it is they have a variety of maps (small, large, etc.) and a variety of lighting conditions and they pick them randomly before the battle. Here's the list of maps that they use (note that almost none of them start with line of sight on round 1): http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=5179891&postcount=7 |
| #17ithamarFeb 24, 2009 11:57:54 | I've run a few arenas over the years, and have managed to lay my hands on various maps. I would humbly suggest using something similar to what I've used in the past: Map Thread. Please note that I did not create most of those maps. They were mostly created by other individuals at various points in the past, and I don't really know who they are. I've tweaked most of them to try and make them a bit more playable, but I'll be the first to admit that some of them still have some odd features. (And I hate the Ogre map, for what it's worth... That one has been almost completely redesigned, I just didn't bother posting it in that thread as that arena is no longer active.) |
