| #1holy_crusaderApr 23, 2008 11:17:53 | Hello all you helpful folk, I'm making a cleric for D&D 3.5, Forgotten Realms. Because I'm quite rusty I was hoping some kind souls would help me out a bit with making a half-decent character who won't trip over his own boots, so to speak. I read some of the threads on clerics, but most allow virtually all books. I have no such advantage (for which I'm thankful, as I'd hate to be amongst team super hero) My demeanour would be typical cleric of some knowledgable god. Knowing, timid, but willing to fight at the front. But in the meanwhile, he has an agenda to gather knowledge on just about everything, and use that knowledge as a weapon to exploit weaknesses or manilpulate events to his advantage, as well as that of the party. I like the idea of a cleric of Mystra, but Anyspell seems too much trouble (getting a spellbook, etc etc). Thankfully, the DM only allowed a few books for me to dig through; PHB, DMG, MM, FRCS, PGTF. No other books allowed. So no Divine metamagic cheesiness. ^^ Level 6, 84 points to distribute amongst stats (1:1 ratio, all start at 0 ) +1 to any stat for level4, max hp (he's a really nice guy on those stats and max hp is yummy, I know). I looked at the most common themes, but most are not within the restrictions put on my character. Cheater of Mystra, Cleric's handbook, cleric build thread, they all assume unlimited book access, So that's why I made this thread. Sooo, any tips? |

See if he'll allow the cloistered cleric variant found on the SRD. It fits perfectly for your archtype. Also, until next level, you'll play party buffer for the most part so take a good read through spells to know what you can and cannot do. What's your deity? What's your party made up of? |

Its decent, and Sun domain is the best domain if you are looking to actually do stuff with your turning that is actual...you know....turning. Once you grab some cookies out of that, see if you can take 5 levels in Radiant Servant of Pelor. RSoP has an adaption sidebar, and in the Realms the appropriate god would be Lathander. Go the buffy/healy/counterspelly route will make you a valuable party member. After that, head back into Morninglord, or take a couple levels in Contemplative or Sacred Exorcist. Both are good, and by that point, your spells are so strong, it doesn't matter what your class features are. |
| #4holy_crusaderApr 24, 2008 7:58:59 | Don't forget the book restriction. :D SRD isn't allowed either. I haven't picked a deity, but I'm leaning towards Mystra, although that can yet change. My party? here goes. NPC Fighter NPC Sorcerer NPC Rogue Cleric of Kelemvor (odd build, elf, uses bows and 2 bastard swords in melee. don't ask) Wizard, might go eldritch knight, Necromancer. Something Swashbucklery (within core, so I don't know what exactly) The NPC's are there to stay. Reason I'm going cleric is because I've done druid and paladin too often, another arcane caster or devoted fighter isn't really necessary and I like the idea of a cleric, because they're versatile. So yes, buffing is a good route because my mass buff spells help a lot of people, but It's not something I want to keep doing for long. I'm a man of action, so to speak, and casting a buff spell every round and some healing is too boring for me. One or two buffs and then I want to do do something offensive or battlefield altering. The +4 persistent spell; which book is it again (I'm at work) and when is it useful to take? level 9? 12? I doubt this game will last until the epic levels, but you never know, but I don't want to be stuck with a feat I never use. I ran Morninglord of Lathander by my DM, but he mentioned we will be facing virtually no undead... so I guess it's not as good an idea as it sounded. Thanks for the help so far. |

| #6WyvernhandApr 24, 2008 8:25:38 | Unfortunately, the best bang/buck group buffs (Recitation, Righteous Wrath) are not in sources you have access to. See if you can get either Complete Divine or Spell Compendium. Most of the core mass buffs (Mass +stat) are WAY overpriced for their power (6th level spells? WTF?) and by the time you get them, the characters that need them already have +stat items for the relevant stats or don't benefit from the stat much (+4 str to the wizard? All that does is prevent him from being shadow food). Bless and Prayer are about your only good mass buffs. With your party size and composition, and lacking DMM, you won't really be able to work yourself up to a 'zilla frenzy in the speed needed to be an efficient beat stick. Counterspelling is also a less viable option because of lack of sources. Honestly....I'd either try to expand your sources, to SpC at the bare minimum, or consider going druid. Druids only need 1 feat, which is core (Nat Spell) and have plenty of mass buffs and control and disables and all that jazz. |
