I read No Country for Old men back in '06, and saw the movie recently. There are a couple discrepancies between the two, but that's neither here, nor there.

His look, his flavor, his weight and height... I have those down. What I'm concerned about is the crunch. Now, it's been a long time since I've played 3.5, so I'm pretty much just staring at a wall of books and asking myself where the heck I should start.

-Human: I've decided this is the best course of action, because of their versatility, extra feat, skill points etc.. (Although "darker" human-like races have been taken into consideration)
-Class: I don't know where to start here. He's an assassin, so Ranger with favored enemy (human (Or whatever, actually)) would work, but its a little tricky when it comes to whether or not to make it him melee or ranged. He uses a rifle for the most part, but he also wields a cattlegun, and he wasn't a very good shot with that silenced assault shotgun (not that its very precise in the first place, *I think*). Now, I think his choice of equipment is more a mixture of preference and utility, than it is optimized, but whatever. So I think I need some help here.
-Everything In-between: /shrug

Please help!

Where do you want to go with him?

I think Chameleon might go.. Perhaps a Spymaster? He was very good at tracking down his foe so maybe either Justicar or Bloodhound?

I'll have a further think on this.. There was something I read last night that could Track extremely well. I'll find it and see if it fits

Sorry, but that last line of the movie must be one of the worst of all time.. For those who haven't seen it, its: "And then I woke up"

Well, one of the allusions from the book is that the main character, Tom Bell, who narrates the story is actually Anton Chigurh. I'm not of that belief, but I think that's where the Coen's were going with it. I could be very off with that suspicion though, but that is where I think that last line holds context.

As for the character, he has kind of a "I will find you/force of nature" feel. In dialogue, he is portrayed removing himself almost entirely from the world of choice. One distinguishing trait actually described where that his eyes were intensely blue, like lapis, but the rest of him was nearly completely ordinary and unremarkable.

Bloodhound or Justicar could very well work.

So the fundamental key aspect of Anton Chigurh was the fact that you could not run from him. The tag line for the film was There are No Clean Getaways.

So you could possibly try a necromancer with a focus on finding individuals which would help represent the sort of death incarnate that is Anton Chigurh.

Intense Blue?

The Spice Must Flow!

How about an Iaijatsu master? It's an odd choice, but when I think force of nature, I think the will of a man crystallized into a single telling and utterly devastating blow. I also think that sublime way always feels very force of nature, very heavily inlaid with undeniable and deadly purpose. Plus tome of battle is a lot of fun.

I'm liking the ideas so far. Necromancy could be a definite option. He's pretty much a specter of death.

I really lean towards an iaijutsu master... particularly with a factotum lead in.
He's faster, he's smarter, he can do anything you can do, and he has oh. so. many. friends.

You could even go as far as the say the cattle gun is just a staff of finger of death.

Now I know you want a human, but what about a Dune Stalker with Alter Self or a Illusion effect over the top.

Reason: the following two abilities

Kiss of Death (Su): The kiss of death is a sonic and death effect delivered with the dune stalker’s face pressed directly against the victim’s. If the dune stalker makes a successful melee touch attack (+9melee), the opponent must attempt a Fortitude saving throw (DC 15). Success leaves the opponent stunned for 1 round; failure sets up lethal vibrations in the opponent’s body that result in instant death. This ability is usable at will.

Improved Tracking (Ex): A consummate tracker, the dune stalker tracks as well as an invisible stalker does. Like that creature, it uses Spot checks rather than Wilderness Lore checks to follow its quarry’s trail.

You could exchange the kiss for holding your hand to the victims head

I think this falls more into the Bloodhound category, particularly with the mark aspect. (Though the subdual pieces are pretty much going to be a waste.)

Chigurh (in the movie at least), seemed to me more implacable-- he wasn't really fast and didn't come off as traditionally "smart", but he couldn't be taken down and he would eventually catch up to you no matter where you went. The scene at the end where he gets into the accident, then just stands up, brushes himself off and limps away kind of epitomized this.

He was just brutally efficient. I almost think a combination of Ranger and Crusader might work well for that-- concentrate on the ranged aspect with Ranger and the melee with Crusader leading into Bloodhound with some Crusader sprinkled in every third level to pick up maneuvers.

Are you married to the human race aspect of the character? Because A construct would fit wonderfully, like a half-golem or a warforged. Talk about implacable- he doesn't eat, doesn't sleep- and if he's a half-golem is immunto magic and has crazy DR.

Also, What would you say Chigurh's alignment is? He seems equally lawful and chaotic evil at the same time.

While this does open up the option of self healing through craft checks as well I think it might drift too much into becoming like the Terminator.

Lawful Evil

A lawful evil villain methodically takes what he wants within the limits of his code of conduct without regard for whom it hurts. He cares about tradition, loyalty, and order but not about freedom, dignity, or life. He plays by the rules but without mercy or compassion.

Lawful evil is the most dangerous alignment because it represents methodical, intentional, and frequently successful evil.

Anton Chigurh: So this is what I'll offer. You bring me the money and I'll let her go. Otherwise she's accountable. The same as you. That's the best deal you're going to get. I won't tell you you can save yourself because you can't.

Carla Jean: I knew this wasn't done with. I ain't got the money. What little I had is long gone and they's bill aplenty to pay yet. I buried my mother today. I ain't paid for that neither.
Chigurh: I wouldn't worry about it.
Carla Jean: I need to sit down. You got no cause to hurt me.
Chigurh: No. But I gave my word.
Carla Jean: You gave your word?
Chigurh: To your husband.
Carla Jean: That don't make sense. You gave your word to my husband to kill me?
Chigurh: Your husband had the opportunity to save you. Instead, he used you to try to save himself.

Bloodhound has been something I've been looking at, but its had for me to reconcile between getting that mark and the other abilities of the class..

Human, yeah, I'm pretty married to that idea, though the Dunestalker idea seemed a very good one.

Ranger/crusader?

Ranger/crusader?

Taking Ranger and Crusader (Tome of Battle) levels until you qualify for Bloodhound.

Ranger 2/Crusader 8/Bloodhound 10 possibly. Level order would probably be something like Ranger 1/Crusader 1/Ranger 1/Crusader 1/Bloodhound 2/Crusader 1/Bloodhound 2/Crusader 1/etc...

Do you think that bloodhound would be worth it, optimally speaking?

If you're optimizing only for combat, probably not. For the other abilities though? I think so-- I would probably cut it a little earlier than 10 if I were playing it though. Maybe Ranger 2/Crusader 12/Bloodhound 6 so you're picking up See Invisbility and Track the Trackless.

Yeah, that sounds a bit more reasonable. I don't think Anton had scent . I was thinking of using a bit of assassin in there, too.

I'm not really sure how well assassin fits, despite the name. What I could see is Avenging Executioner though, out of Complete Scoundrel. Anton never really attacked from hiding in the movie (from what I recall), however, I could definitely see him picking up sneak attack damage on shaken, frightened, and panicked characters.

Hmm... maybe Ranger 2/Crusader 7/Bloodhound 6/Avenging Executioner 5, possibly dropping a level of Bloodhound to pick up a 6th level Devoted Spirit stance. All of those are decent and you can pick up see invisibility with a magic item.

Ranger 2/Crusader 8/Bloodhound 5/Avenging Executioner 5... I think that works fairly well for his build. Martial Study (Shadow Jaunt) and Martial Stance (Assassin's Stance) would bump his sudden strike damage up to 5d6, which is decent. Daunting Strike should be one of the maneuvers, as a method of provoking shaken status and it would probably be good to pick up a feat or two for that as well.

I may have to build that out-- that would be fun to throw up against the PCs in one of my games.

It looks like fun, actually.
