Creation Block

Ok so on our first gaming session in a new campaign .... I died.

I attribute this to my complete misunderstanding of the planes, the location for the the new campaign. While I do like to consider myself a rather decent optimizer, I am currently hitting a huge block in what to create as a replacment for my original character (VoP FoF monk).

The party is in need of a melee beefcake who can absorbe damage as well as dish a fair amount out, yet I died as my ability to deal with ranged opponents was lacking.

So CO boards, any ideas?

Starting level, sources allowed, creation method, starting wealth, etc. would all be helpful in providing appropriate guidance.  We can glean that Complete Champion and BoED is allowed; PH/DMG are de facto allowances, normally.  What else?

EDIT: Wild shot in the dark, but this might be appropriate, if allowed:

Seriously, though, post your books allowed, starting stats, and maybe the party dynamic and any appropriate house-rules and you'll get better answers. If you want a true non-magic 'meleer' the ToB classes or some combination of them is going to likely be your best bet. If you really want monk-style, an Ur-Priest/Sacred Fist (often called 'Sacreligious Fist' around these parts) of various styles is going to get you pretty far. I did just build one that even pulled maneuvers from ToB into play that I really liked.
