Hey all,

My DM announced that in 1 week there will be a big PvP battle (Deathmatch, Group, and Solo PvP)

The rules are:
Level 15 Characters
Level 15 Gold + 20% Bonus
Books: PH1, DMG, Song And Silence, Sword and Fist, Complete Arcane, Masters of the Wild, Defenders of the Faith.

I know 2 players are going to be Wizards / Sorcerers, 1 will be a Barbarian, 1 a Druid, 1 a Ranger, and the others are unknown.

I was hoping to build a Rogue, Shadow Dancer, Assassin, or Cleric.
If you are able to suggest a class or perhaps even a build. That would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

(Any more info you need, please let me know)

Is this using 3.5 rules, or 3.0? With CArc thrown in there, I'd give the advantage to the wizards/sorcerers. You might be able to pull something crazy off like a rogue that runs around in an AMF and stabs people to death, though. Can you use monster manual races with LAs? You could make a cleric that could probably hold his own, also.

What are the rules on expendable items? That's a huge issue for arena/PvP battles. If you spend your entire budget on Candles of Invocation, it can get a bit ridiculous.

Another issue: what will the arena look like? Small arenas put a huge premium on acting first, whereas in big arenas buffing is very important.

My two cents: a non-spellcaster will be at a huge, huge disadvantage (unless the arena is extremely small).

You could try going Ranger/Rogue if you want to try for a high damage output. It works best if if you can make yourself invisible (try +20 UMD for a wand of greater invisibility). You can build up a ridiculously high SA bonus if you dip in a bunch of different classes (though I don't know how many there are in those books). If spellthief is in the options you might be able to use a couple of levels in it to steal your opponent's buffs. If you wanted to go Assasin, the greater invisibilty gives you the potential to use death attacks on them. Also, the animal companion you get from Ranger gives you some flanking against foes who can see invisibility.

I agree over all though that non-spellcasters are at a big disadvantage in PvP situations, unless you wanted to try and play a mage killer.

Arena is medium sized,
Not sure Warlock is in the books listed above,
Really OP stuff (like Candles) are likely to be banned,
3.5 rules,

It'd be basic items out of DMG

And does See Invisible work on Sneak / Hide?

The Candle of Invocation was an extreme example. But there are other powerful, expendable magic items (scrolls of Time Stop or Gate or Mordenkainen's Disjunction or Maze or Forcecage [etc., etc.], Incense of Meditation, Dust of Disappearance, etc.).

warlock is in complete arcane

see invisibility does not see you if you are hiding (as in hide the skill)

I would suggest wizard 5/mage of the arcane order7/arcmage 3 If you use a race with LA take out arcmage levels

I didn't bother reading the entry, but the usual suggestions are these:

1) Play a druid.
2) Play a cleric.
3) Buy a Candle of Invocation
4) Buy Dust of Sneezing and Choking

The books you've mentioned aren't, generally, at the top of a sneaky character's "must-have"s.

Incense of Meditation

I did NOT know about this. Coohool!

Ending with a tip: You can overheal yourself with summoned creatures with the Vivacious template or Plane Shifting yourslef to the Plane of Positive Energy for a spell (pun intended).

just make sure you use Vampiric Weapons, and have something that will give Fast Healing

since you will be able to do a Lot of damage... and can Take a lot of damage WHILE in a Frenzy..... the problem come up when you finish your Rage.... then you might have killed everything else, but then Die at the end yourself

thats why i suggested the Pixie Warlock.... you stay out of reach... with unlimited Firepower... you will be the last one alive... even if facing a Frenzied Berserker

Things to keep in mind. How are you going to deal with:
  • invisibility and other illusions? (the Hand of Glory from the DMG gives See Invisibility; Dust of Appearance works, but is expensive)
  • flying opponents? (Boots of Flying work, but a flying mount can be even better)
  • a faster opponent who wants to avoid melee? (again, a flying mount is a big help)
  • a sneaky opponent with a high Hide check?
  • an opponent who uses save-or-die spells targeting your Will save? (potions of Protection from Evil help somewhat)
  • summoned monsters? (again, Protection from Evil helps)
  • battlefield control spells like Solid Fog, Sleet Storm, Forcecage, etc.? (a Ring of Freedom of Movement helps in some cases)

Equipment is very, very important for a potential melee fighter at high levels.

Hmm, a frenzied berserker does not seem durable enough for an arena game, for me. A rogue could deal you gazillions of damage if he got you flat-footed (and he probably will), a Wizard could outright kill you with a simple save-or-die or even worse - a Large Fighter with a reach weapon could beat you at your own game pretty easily (S&F is in, and as such Large and In Charge).

Also, be mindful os using a build the other players already know, as it seems your case; this might just make you a target.

My own personal strategy (as a gish or a sneaky-gish, the types I usually like to play) would be to surprise your FB, sneak attack him for some damage and then run away with my magic (illusions, teleport, invisibility, flight - there are tons of ways to do it at 15th level), wait for your rage to end and then attack (dispelling all your magic before, of course).

Very good points, never saw it that way. How about this...

Rogue 5 / Assassin (10) For Hide in Plain Sight
Was hoping to go with a hidden crossbow (or just a regular bow) with Hunter Sight (60 feet Sneak Attacks) I would provoke sneak attacks with Quicker Than The Eye (Bluff to misdirect someone vs their spot, if the fail they are considered flat footed)

or

Ranger (6) / Ninja of the Crescent Moon (9) - No Hide in Plain Sight

I'm mostly worried that who ever wins initiative wins basically. It'd be nice to have a way to live the first round to Hide (even while observed) then sneak up and lay down the hurt.

Any other builds I can maybe use that someone has run into?

this is the basic principle of Arena Tactics(All Tactics at higher levels) ... learn to accept it, and use it to your advantage

Yeah, he allowed me to drop my Movement Speed increase for pounce.
For the Race not sure if he'd allow me to be a full on orc, he likes the core races.

I'm thinking of concentrating on lots of life so I can soak a lot of damage from the casters before the dust me with Disintegrate. So pump a lot into Con and maybe use some Spike Chains for Range after popping an Enlarge Person Pot.

I was thinking...

1 - Barbarian - Destructive Rage
2 - Fighter - Power Attack
3 - Fighter - Cleave, Intimidating Rage
4 - Fighter -
5 - Figther - Weapon Spec, Spiked Chain
6 - Barbarian - ? Feat
7 - FrB -
8 - FrB -
9 - FrB -
10 - FrB -
11 - FrB -
12 - ?
13 - ?
14 - ?
15 - ?

And items I'll just get lots of healing potions, maybe some fly, see invis, and enlarge, etc. Ontop of a good weapon and LOTS of con / str and will. I do have 240,000 gold to work with :P

any suggestions for the last 4 classes?
