One of my most treasured memories when I was younger was putting out a spreading fire with a spell on my wizard (though I won't say how for the purpose of this thread). And I'm curious if it could've been done better. So, here's my challenge. Put out a very large fire as efficiently as possible. While speed is certainly smiled upon, being able to do so with limited resources is just as important, if not moreso. I had to use a pretty high level spell to accomplish what my wizard once did. |

| #3daegerNov 27, 2009 13:25:30 | Define "Very large." It.. really doesn't matter. Feel free to propose your own scenario in which your trick would work if you have one. Obviously the more intense you can make it, the better. I didn't realize the old CharOp forum was so desolate now.. |

A less practical option would be covering the area with something like Walls of Force and thus preventing oxygen from getting there, but I prefer Gate. In a coastal area Tsunami would probably do the same and Control weather has potential too. |

| #6Treantmonklvl20Nov 27, 2009 15:49:02 | Any summoner can start summoning Water Elementals with the "Drench" ability. Can anything put out fires faster than that? Surely Sleet Storm is going to put out a pretty big fire, and at fairly low level too. |

Finally, a post that isn't about 9th level spells. Sleet Storm is actually the spell I used, the only problem is you had to make sure there were no innocent bystanders to get hit with it. Unfortunately I usually ban evocations on my wizards nowadays, and shadow evocationing it wouldn't do any good. The water elemental thing is a great suggestion though! |
| #8emoduckNov 27, 2009 17:54:16 | There's always Call Avalanche, a 5th level druid spell from Frostburn. Its area is a 10 ft. radius per level, so I imagine it could quench a sizeable flame. Of course, there's the thing about bystanders again. :P Create Water and Control Water could probably be combined somehow. |

All the commoners pass out instead. Why not? www.youtube.com/watch?v=we9_CdNPuJg Or, Fimbulwinter from Frostburn and you even make sure nobody plays arsonist in your city for another 4d12 weeks. It's also 1 mile/radius so unless your fire is scorching it's way thru the amazons, the spell should suffice. |
| #10streamoftheskyNov 27, 2009 21:54:42 | What? Is Quench not good enough? Or just not creative enough? www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/quench.htm |
| #11daegerNov 27, 2009 23:07:05 | What? Is Quench not good enough? Or just not creative enough? I actually didn't know about Quench because I don't normally play druids, but let's ignore that as the obvious answer for now. :p |
| #12exelarNov 28, 2009 1:46:29 | Sleet Storm is actually the spell I used, the only problem is you had to make sure there were no innocent bystanders to get hit with it. There is a very simple solution to that problem, and it takes only two words to describe it: Chaotic Neutral. Now, for anyone who feels like going (way)overboard, frostburn is the way to go: Dire winter and Ice age are epsic spells with Spellcraft DC over 300 where you summon winter and an ice age respectivelly. At spell level 6, the unimaginative supress flame will, well, supress flames. At the same level, if you happen to have snow around, move snow and ice works great, for a maximum area of 750 feet by 750 feet (casting time 4 hours!!) For a level 2 spell, druids can use flash freeze, take away the heat, out goes the fire (if the combustible is dropped below it's combustion point, it stops burning, physics 101, even if the spell is not meant for that) |
| #13Treantmonklvl20Nov 28, 2009 7:57:57 | Any summoner can start summoning Water Elementals with the "Drench" ability. Can anything put out fires faster than that? Good thing Sleet Storm isn't Evocation - it's Conjuration. Ahhh...conjuration - is there nothing you can't do??? If you are concerned about bystanders - then go with my original suggestion and summon monster - elemental (water) and have them use their "drench" ability - which is specifically for putting out large fires - rinse and repeat. |
| #14hsienNov 28, 2009 11:33:03 | What? Is Quench not good enough? Or just not creative enough? Exactly what I was thinking, at 20 ft cube/level is a pretty big area. Widen Spell, meta-magic, to make it a 40 ft cube/level For smaller fires, Pyrotechnics and create water can be very useful. |
| #15godkyraNov 28, 2009 14:32:44 | ![]() Wiz 3 Feats: Snowcasting, Flash Frost Spells: Locate City. 30 miles of cold - not quite enough to kill much but certainly chill enough to stop the chemical reaction that is fire. - I think. |
| #16daegerNov 28, 2009 17:35:51 | Good thing Sleet Storm isn't Evocation - it's Conjuration. Well I'll be damned.
I've never heard of the Locate City Bomb before, neat trick. |
| #17PlzBreakMyCampaignNov 29, 2009 10:59:14 | What? Is Quench not good enough? Or just not creative enough? Clearly the best answer. Also, good to see you over on these OH-DEAR-LORD-MY-EYES boards. Are you on BG or GitP? |
| #18staticx278Nov 29, 2009 11:09:44 | The biggest question I have is how much fire are we talking about? I mean create water dumps 2 gallon per level as a 0 level spell. If you were 20th, that's 40 gallons of water every 6 seconds, which gets especially fun if you're playing pathfinder, where you can cast a certain number of 0 levels at will. Even without that, you could easily download all your availible spell slots to dedicate to create water and create a metric ton of water. Depending on the area you're talking about, going around the fire and creating a trench around the fire with spells like move earth, disintegrate, etc would prevent the fire from spreading, at which point, you can take your time in putting the fire out, much like real fire fighters do. |
| #19streamoftheskyNov 29, 2009 12:16:35 | Also, good to see you over on these OH-DEAR-LORD-MY-EYES boards. Are you on BG or GitP? Not sure what "BG" refers to... I forget if I ever registered on GitP, if I did, haven't posted there in years. I mostly post on ENWorld and just came here for the awesome CharOp threads, before I finally decided to stop lurking. ![]() |

BG= Brilliant Gameologists, which is where a lot of us went to when this board basically went down the toilet. www.brilliantgameologists.com/boards There is also a podcast, which is technically what the boards were started around. |
