D&D 3.5 Summoning Customization

Jun 24, 2013 4:40:19 Hey. I am a Wizard with Summon Monster. Theres a list for summon monster in PHB, in which I can only choose from. Is it possible for me to summoner other things.. Like if I wanted to summon a manta ray, would that be possible? If so how.

Jun 24, 2013 6:42:01 There is a variant (Complete Arcane, I think) that allows you to customize your entire summoning list, which is basically exchanging the "standard" SM/SNA monsters with others of similar power that are more thematically appropriate for your character. Keep in mind that your SM list must have all elemantal or outsider types.

And as always, Check with your DM

Jun 24, 2013 6:52:39 There are a lot of official alternative creatures scattered all over different books, some of which are specifically noted as replacements, some of which are not (which may well be intended as replacements anyway). Generally, you're putting in the new summoned creature in place of one of the existing choices that serves approximately the same function at the same spell level. If the DM is okay with a creature being added to the summoning lists without removing anything, consider it a bonus, because most of the ones I know require a creature to be replaced.

Unfortunately, I don't know of one that gives you a manta ray specifically, so I guess you'd have to ask your DM if that's the creature you want. The manta ray is not a really good fit, though, since it's got way too many hit points and Hit Dice for the summon monster I list, but doesn't have any useful features that justify being on the summon monster II list (it's still ahead of the average on hp/HD, but its attack bonus is 3 points lower than even the worst attackers, and it has no abilities of interest).

Jun 24, 2013 7:32:16 Stormwrack offers some additional aquatic summons, but unfortunately I'm pretty sure the manta ray isn't one of them.

I know that they add fiendish crabs, diving spiders and sea snakes, and eventually dire eels, dire barracudas, etc.

There's a variant in Unearthed Arcana, hence also in the SRD.

Checking with the DM is all the more necessary since Unearthed Arcana is all about variants.
