I started looking around for some threads on the system, and to my surprise I can't find anything even remotely useful. No handbooks, no charts of comparative saves at various levels, no threads on the most useful items, nothing. So, this thread is simply asking if anyone else has links to useful information that will help me evaluate at least where to start making a character. (To note once again, I'm not asking for a build. I just want information on the system which will help me figure out where to start.) |

Other than fast hero being significantly better than the other base classes for a combat build, and picking a decent advanced class, d20 modern is remarkly straightforward. Since this is the d20 Char Op forum (I've seen a few SAGA threads in here too) why don't you just post your character concept / setting / starting level and we'll see what we can do for you. I myself have done a fair bit of character building for d20 Future, and remember a lot of the good items / tricks. One example of something you should grab if you're playing a melee character in d20 future is the Electrified Weapon gadget. +4d6 electricity damage for +2 PDC (Future Tech pg. 20). |

Yeah, I liked that gadget although I'm annoyed that the closest similar thing I found for ranged cost more and did less. Anyways, since there really doesn't appear to be any information I'm currently playing in PL6 game starting at level 3. I intend to stack Heir, Windfall, etc to get extremely high starting wealth then purchase the cybernetic natural armor, a ranged weapon with the +1 dice mod, and a melee backup with the Electrified Weapon gadget. Any other tricks you know with items? (besides stacking the AC improvement gadget on a cheap armor, which is just a tad over the top for this campaign I think) Other than that, I'm unsure as to what class to take (haven't rolled stats yet), although I'm definitely taking at least a level of Fast hero. I'd appreciate a breakdown of which advanced classes work out best in play as well. |

The lack of weapon availability was somewhat unfortunate, as I'd built my character as a gunslinger. I also had a talent (might have been 3rd party? dunno) that gave me an initiative bonus, which was way cool. |

I'd suggest dipping into it for two levels. Something like Fast 3 / Tracker 1 / Soldier 3 to start off with, then go with more Tracker for the BaB / Sneak attack or more Soldier for the critical hit properties if your weapon of choice has a decent crit range. 2 levels of soldier nabs you WF & WS, and the third nets a bonus feat. Personally, I'd go with Tracker because I like having a decent BaB, and most classes don't have that. oh, and see if you can't talk your GM into letting you get a Chain Shirt as armour. It's heavier, but it's got better stats than any d20 Modern / Future light armour. They just don't build 'em like they used to... (have actually done this in-game). ;) More equipment advice: Get a HUD with all the software you can, and hook it up to a motion sensor. Those things are awesome. Targeting software is also helpful, as is the Laser Sight from d20 Modern, NOT the range-finding laser scope from Future, which sucks. If you can nab PL 7 stuff at the +5 PDC adjustment, get a Projectile deflector and Power Backpack. +4 AC v. ranged is sexy, and being able to use full-auto settings all the time is wonderful. |
