| #1wolfkin13Oct 25, 2013 13:12:48 | I have a friend that is gonna DM a campaign and asked me to build a Deadpool character for him. I'm decent with fighter/ninja builds, but I have no clue about Deadpool and his abilities. Anyone out there wanna tackle this one for fun? |
| #2KruskOct 25, 2013 15:32:04 | Deadpools ability is his super charged healing factor. You can cut his arm off, and he can pop it back on. You can shoot him a million times, and he just pops back up.,
To get something that resembles deadpool you probably need a little more char-op trickery than most people would like.
You could play a Half Black Dragon, Wartroll (MM3). Immune to damage, and can reattach limbs. If you are high enough level, you could add in a few levels of swordsage, or maybe warblade?
If you are playing at low levels, deadpools special abilities are basically out, but you could maybe break out savage species and play a normal troll who bought rings of elemental immunity fire and acid.
Some variant of troll really seems the important part, for the healing factor. |
| #3Slagger_the_ChuulOct 25, 2013 18:48:25 | A chain devil is probably the closest overall match, given its combination of human-like appearance and regeneration (overcome by silver and good); like the troll, it's not really a low-level idea. |
| #4Andarious-RosethornOct 25, 2013 20:41:31 | Chain devil's a good call cause he can wear a gimp suite to cover up how fugly he is, dispite being generlaly humanlike. |
| #5KruskOct 26, 2013 16:21:05 | OP, if you can give us any more information you can get a lot better responses.
Level, starting cash, house rules, books allowed, etc. |
| #6wolfkin13Oct 26, 2013 16:33:28 | Epic level, racial must resemble humanlike, gold is no limit. D&d published books only. The way you're describin the chain devil sounds good. This is a character for the DM to use for havin a lil fun. I ask here because I don't have the expansive know-how some of you have. |
| #7Maat_MonsOct 26, 2013 16:35:24 | So, this is going to be an NPC? Will the players have to fight it?
The troll-blooded feat (Dragon 319, p61) has already been mentioned. That's a very low-level way to gain regeneration (overcome by acid and fire).
The tainted-blood template (Bestiary of Krynn) gives immunity to acid damage for +1 CR (also +1 LA). It makes the creature "always chaotic evil," which might be a problem if this is supposed to be a good guy. The Imix-blooded template (Monster Manual V, p65) gives immunity to fire damage by way of the fire subtype for +1 CR (also +1 LA). It can only be applied to evil creatures, but that's no more restrictive than tainted-blood already is. |
| #8wolfkin13Oct 26, 2013 18:17:51 | An NPC that I assume the players won't be fighting. DM hasn't told me that much. I am one of the players after all. lol But he is new to DM'ing and asked me to help him with something. So as far as level adjustments or whatever you have to use, as long as it's in D&D only and no 3rd party publications, and comes out to doing what Deadpool does so that it can pass as a great Deadpool, use whatever you can come up with. As I am not familiar with every one of Deadpools abilities, and not extensively knowledgeable about the D&D universe, I pose the challenge to whoever wants to toss the torch around.
|
| #9KruskOct 27, 2013 9:26:36 | Ok... what level? Epic ranges from 21-9001. Also, what books should we limit it to?
A chain devil works, but can be killed fairly easily especially by an epic level party, which I'd shy away from if you want someone truely immune to damage.
Ask the DM to house rule this specific troll as medium size. that half black dragon wartroll/swordsage 9001 would make a pretty solid deadpool.
Alternatively, if it can spend as much money as it wants, you can do it a lot cheaper. Just take anything with regeneration and give it ring of elemental immunity for the thing that bypasses regeneration. |
| #10Maat_MonsOct 27, 2013 13:23:23 | I missed the part about being epic level and only allowing printed books.
The return to nature spell (Eberron Campaign Setting, p114) reduces a giant's size by one category as an instantaneous effect. That doesn't help with war troll, since they're monstrous humanoids for some reason.
Crystalline troll (Monster Manual III, p178) could be a suitable replacement. The half battle dragon template (Races of the Dragon, p70) gives immunity to sonic damage. That winds up with ECL 17 (and CR 9). |
| #11wolfkin13Oct 28, 2013 15:01:19 | Half Troll template fit? Then slap that ring of elemental immunity on him? Then a ninja and fighter build? Or do you think another class combo would fit Deadpool better?
All I ever knew is epic levels stop around 40. Never played a campaign where anybody made it past level 16. Call it lack of skill or what not. This character is suppose to be a "group friend/contact" to help the group. I can't convince him to just fudge it. |
| #12Andarious-RosethornOct 28, 2013 15:59:05 | Go with Swordsage, cause Deadpool's cool like that. |

| #15wolfkin13Oct 29, 2013 2:21:49 | He did not specify any level. When I asked what level he should be, he just replied Epic. I am assuming he just wants a badass that none of us can really beat but he uses hime to move the story along. I use to do this with my own characters, but I would use a character just a few levels above them and with a few abilities that were usually out of reach for a pc tacked onto them. At least they were to my knowledge at that time. I have since found out about optimization threads and am learning new ways to think up characters. I just have no clue to Deadpools abilities as I am not really a fan. All I knew about him is speed, and swords. |
| #16Andarious-RosethornOct 29, 2013 9:43:46 | He's a marksman, and an excellent melee combatant, other than that his biggest thing and only real super power is the fact he's able to regenerate from anything, and reattatch severed limbs through this regeneration. The background as I know it is that he had terminal skin cancer and was given a syrum made out of a cocktail of mutant healing factor thingies (to quote dealpool basically). It didn't cure the cancer, in fact it made it worse, but he can't be killed now, so it worked in that regard. |
| #17Maat_MonsOct 29, 2013 10:51:34 | Note that half-troll gives fast healing, not regeneration. Fast healing has the advantage of working on all damage, but has the disadvantage that it won't keep you alive when you've been reduced to a lumpy paste.
If fast healing is good enough for you and your DM, healing blood (Lords of Madness, p216) would be the most fitting option (from my very limited knowledge of Deadpool). It involves paying a mad scientist 182,000 gp to replace your blood with a substance that gives you fast healing 2.
Assuming Deadpool is ageless like Wolverine, you could go with elan (Expanded Psionics Handbook, p9). An elan was originally a human and still looks the same, but has been altered by a ritual into something that can live indefinitely.
As mentioned, the classes from Tome of Battle are almost the only way for characters who don't use magic to have cool options at high levels.
Can you convince the DM to allow content from the Wizards of the Coast website? There's an alternative class feature for barbarian in the Cityscape web enhancement that gives the ability to charge multiple foes in a round. You can easily get 200+ damage per hit when charging, so this would allow the character to sweep through a bunch of very weak (relative to him) enemies in a single turn. That's one of very few non-ToB abilities for mundane characters that actually feels "epic" to me. |

|
| #19Slagger_the_ChuulOct 29, 2013 21:37:39 | If we're translating the concept to a D&D world, he would presumably be aware of a lot of D&D mechanics normally beyond the ken of a character (rather than being aware of being in a comic book), like knowing that his severed arm will grow back in exactly 4 minutes... this time. |
| #20Andarious-RosethornOct 29, 2013 23:05:43 | Exactly the sort of thing he'd do. He aught to break the fourth wall for whatever medium he's in. I'm hooked on Marvel Avenger's Alliance and the guy breaks the fourth wall constantly in the video game. He also does weird **** like befriend a member of hydra, just because. |
| #21KruskOct 31, 2013 15:31:47 | OK, if its levelless, just say "Dude make him a level 20 fighter/400 wizard. He made some super awesome epic spell that makes him immune to damage".
Honestly if its an NPC that is unkillable just to hang around you and be better than you, that sounds terrible. |
| #22IschtanNov 14, 2013 9:19:02 | Take a look here: Deadpool build contest: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=309270 |
| #23RogerWilcoNov 14, 2013 14:54:08 | Swordsage/Ranger/Master of Many Forms using War Troll form is the closest thing I can come up with.
Not exactly Deadpool but might give the flavour and the fun of the character. |
| #24Slagger_the_ChuulNov 14, 2013 17:19:37 | The thing I'd point out from the contest is that a couple of them make use of a magical location called the Shriver (Fiendish Codex 2, pages 53-54) containing a Baatorian torture device. If you can survive taking 1d20 damage per round for long enough and then escape from said device, you gain up to regeneration 5, making it a useful way to get regeneration on an otherwise standard humanoid or monstrous humanoid. The abilities do fade after 99 days, but the method given for keeping them longer is relatively easy to handle in this case. |
