So...what is there to take instead of scribe scroll?

The classics are improved initiative and improved toughness, but there has to be more interesting choices out there.

Shield block for those with mithril bucklers and proficiency?

Any other interesting suggestions?

Well, it depends on why you are taking Fighter Bonus Feats over Wizard Feats. Since Metamagic feats are some good for Wizards, I'm assuming it's because you're playing a Gish. In that case, some useful ones are the following:

Exotic Weapon Proficiency - Spiked Chain (though you can't take this at level 1 because it has a BAB requirement of 1)
Combat Expertise (with the intent of taking Improved Trip later)
Weapon Finesse (if you have a better Dex than Str, but again you can't take this at 1)

It may just be me, but there's a reason why I (almost) always sub out SS for Improved Init. I roll init anywhere from 1-5 times a game session. Where I am in the initiative order affects everything I am able to do in combat, with earlier almost always being better. The +4 is a great boon, especially vs other full casters.

For me to choose something else, it would have to be either necessary for the build (I.E. the only way I could meat feat pre-reqs for a PrC), or provide a greater bonus, or be the only way I can fit in all the feats I need for the concept (like the TWF tree for a Daggerspell Mage).

Most of the time when you use this option, you don't plan on taking more than 5 wizard levels. So you take Improved Initiative at first, and something else that's useful at 5th, like Quickdraw. Then you go into your PrC and don't have to worry about it anymore.

well ... first of all you HAVE to take Improved Init. for SS ... but nevermind

nevertheless ... as following Feats:
Improved Toughness (extra Hitpoints never hurt)
Point Blank Shot - Precise Shot (shoot into CC without the -4 Penalty CAN help)
Combat Casting (? donno if that is even possible)(defensive Casting for the win!)

IIRC, Improved Toughness is not a fighter feat, is it?

Wasn't the usual technique to trade the 5th level feat for a domain granted power after trading the first level one for I.I? Or wasn't that allowed?

Spontaneous Divination is another big favourite for the 5th spot. I don't see any problems with this being allowed, as you are trading "Wizard Bonus Feats" either way... still, I can see that there is problably some DM that would rule otherwise, if only to abuse their players.

"Well, it depends on why you are taking Fighter Bonus Feats over Wizard Feats."

I'm not: Subbing out for Scribe Scroll, as per UA. As a gish I'd be able to find something appropriate, but for pure casters, I always struggle to think of anything original. I despise improved initiative for being 'boring', so am wondering what others use.

"IIRC, Improved Toughness is not a fighter feat, is it?"

I think I checked it the other day. Combat casting isn't, though. PBS is good for rays. Any other ideas?
