| #1siranuiJul 21, 2009 4:14:37 | Reading the 'CO Gallup: Favorites!' thread, the thought occurred to me that 'favourite deity' was missing as a question. So: What deity description have you read and thought 'cool' to, and have you ever based a character around it. It must be said that I struggle to play characters who exist to serve their deity, so I tend to avoid outright clerics or other 'direct' servants, and tend to go for characters who just quietly have a patron, and get on with their lives (I don't like religious extremism or bigotry IRL). However, I can sometimes handle playing paladin-like exemplars of a deity's ideal. Anyway, going back to 1st Ed, I was a bit of a Kelanan the Sword Lord fanboy, but have never played a class that went down the route of worship (Maybe I should play a Ftr/Kensei sometime). I also really like Wee Jas. The magic-but-slightly-dodgy thing, combined with the vanity and ancestor reverence makes for a cool portfolio. And after years of pondering the idea, I've finally got around to playing a holy warrior of the creed. Anyone else? And have you ever/often been swayed to play a servant of a deity due to outright 'cool' factor, rather than domain powers, and then tried to make the most of what you could get? What did you decide to go for? |

Then again, being Lawful Neutral and making plans seems to fit well with my CO mentality, and it fits with most of my characters. Being a scry/die wizard, or a tactical minded fighter. |

| #5ninjarabbitJul 21, 2009 5:49:54 | Boccob and Kord are my two favorites. |
| #6innabinderJul 21, 2009 6:56:38 | Red Knight, Wee Jas, Chronepsis |
| #7acereraklivesJul 21, 2009 7:35:59 | Dragonlance: I'm a big fan of Reorx, since he was a major part of a long-term campaign that I've DM'd. Hiddukel and Sargonnas are pretty cool too. Forgotten Realms: I like Tyr, Mielikki, Iyachtu Xvim, Moander, and Malar best. |
| #8dr_rocktopusJul 21, 2009 12:02:54 | Red Knight, Wee Jas, Chronepsis Add Aoskar as well as Sardior and you have my list. |
| #9immortalsoulJul 21, 2009 12:54:54 | I really like Selune for several reasons, on of them being that i can imagine a lot of interesting quests/campaigns based on the eternal battle of Selune and Shar. Mystra is cool, too. In my current game I play a worshipper of Mystra, who, along with another player's character (an exalted follower of Mystra with VoP), tracks down evil spellcasters, necromancers and the like. ⁈dit: And oh yes, I often felt like creating characters around the concept of a certain goddess (a drow worshipping Eilistraee, for example, because I felt it was a cool idea. No scimitars and no panther of course ;) |
| #10tethlisJul 21, 2009 17:27:17 | I like: Helm - Great diety that can fit any campaign (I like playing Evil "Helmites") Haela Brightaxe - Clerics with the war domain and greatsword proficiency! Hoar - Fun paladin diety |
| #11siranuiJul 22, 2009 0:57:45 | Gotta love War domain coupled with a decent weapon! |
| #12danduJul 22, 2009 1:07:21 | Eilistraee For obvious reasons. |
| #13tshernJul 22, 2009 6:31:55 | Not a deity per se, but my vote goes straight to Asmodeus. |
| #14siranuiJul 22, 2009 7:07:04 | It's always struck me that with players desperately thumbing through books searching for deities with the War domain and favoured weapon: Bastard sword, that any new deity could win themselves a flock of converts by simply having the War domain and rather liking spiked chains... |
| #15tshernJul 22, 2009 7:31:57 | It's always struck me that with players desperately thumbing through books searching for deities with the War domain and favoured weapon: Bastard sword, that any new deity could win themselves a flock of converts by simply having the War domain and rather liking spiked chains... Doesn't work if you go by the wording in the book. But yes, I've found myself thinking about this too. |
| #16DavidJul 22, 2009 7:56:47 | Hmm, I always wanted to play a follower of Vecna... Shhh, it's a secret! |
| #17gilfalas_elaandrinJul 22, 2009 13:22:09 | Kelemvor from the FR setting. A god of death that despises undead as a perversion of the natural cycle of life and wants folks to look forward to the afterlife and not fear death. It offers a lot of cool RP moments, especially when officiating over funerals or 'easing' the aged into the 'long rest'. Though it is often hard to go to new lands, get announced as a priest of the god of death and then try to convince people that your really an ok guy. Plus it is great to be able to tell necromancers and intelligent undead "I have looked upon the face of Death and found it a great comfort. Can you say the same?" as you judge them. And the fact he has Travel, Repose and Fate domains and Bastard Sword as a favored weapon don't hurt either... |
| #18siranuiJul 23, 2009 3:36:45 | I forgot him (as I don't play FR and only thumb through source books), but he struck me as pretty darned cool too. It's a really nice concept which is fleshed out well. Whereas I saw Red Knight and thought it was a good concept, but fairly poorly implemented (not that it was rubbish...but that it could have been SO much better). |
| #19mining_monkJul 23, 2009 4:49:23 | Me. Oh, you mean otherwise? In my GM's world Pun Pun has ascended. God of Cheese. I'm serious. Cheesemakers pray to the lord Pun-Pun for a good cheese. That was a great session when someone new came in with pun-Pun. Funny thing is, I could have taken him. He was that bad. While the rest of us were playing heavily optimised initators (Best player) Cleric (Second best) Standard pure wizard (3rd best) and Mystic Theurge without such hefty requirements (1 wizard, 1 cleric, MT had 20 levels preepic, all levels +1 to both CLs) (Prettty overpowered, but he took loads of buffs for the team and was a GREAT team player by the end of the campaign. He is our best protege) (Worst. Though CL stood for cheese level when he first showed up), he was playing an Incantrix (better than MR MT. Just.) . He was nigh on useless somehow, thought optimization was PunPun equivalent. :D Wow, if only writing essays was this easy ;) |
| #20gixanthraxJul 23, 2009 5:10:35 | I have to say, I'm abig fan of Hanseath, the dwarven god of fighting, drinking an singing. Come on any god that got prayers with texts like " Beer in the evening, beer in the morning" has to be worshipped. Having a tankard as aholy symbol is also nice! and for playability: Chaos, strength war and travel plus the greataxe as a favoured weapon, yeah! So all praise Hanseath, god of brewers! |
