| #1echildaApr 10, 2008 14:14:17 | I am currently playing in a setting called Dragonstar, which is effectively DnD in space. Laser guns, robots and the like. Im currently playing a wizard, but unfortunately the weapons in the game make it quite lethal so Im making a backup character just in case. I rolled up stats and got 10,12,12,13,14,15. One of the features of the game is automatic weapons fire which is handled quite simply that for every 5 points you exceed the targets armour class you roll damage again. The inner optimist in me thought that this could be used effectively in some way through a massive boost to the attack roll, probably through dex. Trawling through the sourcebook I found the following feat

| #3sinfire_titanApr 10, 2008 14:28:00 | Stance of Chaos FTW? |
| #4echildaApr 10, 2008 14:29:48 | Stance of Chaos FTW? Can you let me know where thats from and Ill give it a look? |
| #5morandirnailoApr 10, 2008 14:42:08 | Sorry it's been a long time since I played in a Dragonstar game, I can't remember: is True Strike available? If so, you should tack a level of Wiz onto that fighter build just for that. Combined with that feat you're talking major damage, especially if you can find a way to make touch attacks. Mor |
| #6echildaApr 10, 2008 14:44:20 | True strike is available yes. My current character uses that so I stand a chance of hitting with metamagiced rays. Im owrried about xp penalties for multicalssing though, which will be in play. Would an item of true strike be better? |
| #7pryorApr 10, 2008 15:54:44 | Items of True Strike are quite difficult to adjudicate with regard to cost. Well, if they are continuous or X times per day, that is. A wand of True Strike would be a cheap way around this, provided you had a way of activating it consistently (and if you go that route, I'd advise using a weapon that had a Wand Chamber added on, so that you needn't spend a move action pulling out the wand, nor have to worry about dropping it to ready the weapon with which you will be attacking). Cheers, Pryor |
| #8sinfire_titanApr 10, 2008 16:01:00 | Can you let me know where thats from and Ill give it a look? Whoops, I meant Aura of Chaos, from Bo9S. Reroll any damage die that rolls max damage, and add the reroll to the total damage dealt. With that feat, you are practically doubling the odds of rolling max damage with a Crusader. Get something that has 2dX damage dice, and go to town. |
| #9InfinitiveApr 10, 2008 16:22:42 | Hrmmmmm... having played Dragonstar, allow me to give you a piece of advice regarding playing that game: Don't. Under any circumstances. Play it. Seriously, the whole setup of that thing is cracked. If you want to do that smart thing, dump your stats into Dex, then trade your feats in for whatever equivalent feat your DM allows to start out with bonus credits, then spend the whole stack on the 3000 credit rifle in the PHB. I have trouble recalling the exact damage on that thing, but it's either 4d10 or 5d10 with 200' range increments, counts as masterwork, and includes a 6- or 8- round clip. I did that for a home game and seriously solo'd most of the encounters our party had; at one point we were ambushed by four gunmen with cover, each firing from a different section of the city. I told the party that I'd handle it, and then did exactly that, as they went on to the appointment we'd made. Seriously. High dex. Big gun. You're hard to hit and hit almost all the time, and with that widowmaker there, a hit equals a kill... until you hit your fifth B.A.B, and can fire it twice a round. I think you can see where I'm going here. Dragonstar, at any level, is like high level D&D- broken by the simple fact that it includes damage-output bloat to make things more dangerous than a simple sword. |
| #10echildaApr 11, 2008 2:02:40 | Thanks for the advice Infinitive, but we have already started the game. I have my reservations over it too, mostly from a perspective that we are bolting 3.5 rules onto a 3.0 game. However the DM wants to run it and the rest of the players enjoy it so thats what we are playing Im afraid. Back to the build, Sinfire that does sound like a plan. IIRC thats a 2nd level stance? I have issues with ToB classes only because the game focusses on ranged combat and most of the manuvers seem to be with melee strikes. I could always go with White Raven and be a party assister. Making my attacks touch attacks is a good plan. Unfortuantely the only way I know how to do this is with Deep Impact and the ToB feat that lets you regain focus after an attack. Are there any other ways? |

| #13echildaApr 11, 2008 14:22:00 | Many thanks for the comments so far. I think I now need to ask can anyone let me know the easiest way to make my ranged attacks as touch attacks? I will probably do a ToB build based around a Crusader for White Raven manouvers and go for Aura of Chaos when I qualify. Maybe working in a level of Wizard for access to true strike, taking a focussed specialist to maximise the amount of castings I can get per day. Equipment wise a wand of quickened true strike looks like a good way to go. |
| #14gilfalas_elaandrinApr 11, 2008 14:36:22 | Equipment wise a wand of quickened true strike looks like a good way to go. Impossible to make without home rules. Wands can only be crafted up to 4th level spells. Quicken is a +4 level adjustment on it's own. A quickened True Strike would me a 5th level, ergo not wand-able. As for ToB builds in Dragonstar, there is a nice section on ToB builds in the Ultimate Archerpost. Most all, if not all, of the advice on Ranged ToB builds in there should work well with your Dragonstar ToB build and a BFG. For stance, Try 'Blood in the Water'. It IS level one, and gives a self stacking and self refreshing +1 to hit and damage every time you crit. Works with any attack form. Makes low damage high Crit range weaponry very attractive. |

Fell shot comes to mind, and combined with that ToB feat that gets your Psionic focus back With a diamond mind strike, it could be useful.... It annoyingly has too many prereq feats. |
| #16jetstrike3000Apr 13, 2008 8:00:17 | Wraith Strike and True Strike FTW! Woot! |
| #17skydragonknightApr 13, 2008 9:26:45 | You're still missing something: Anthropomorphic PIIIGS IIIN SPAAACE!!! |
| #18lord_zeb_02Apr 13, 2008 13:52:38 | I love Dragonstar... We bolted some pre-RCR Star Wars on to it back when we played, including Force Points, Force Sensitivity & Powers... made ranged rifle attacks all the better for our Force Sensitive Sorcerer. For 3.5 D&D, I think a Fighter/Sorcerer multi-class with a focus on self-buffs would work.. just be human so you don't have the pesky xp penalty. @ Level 12: Fighter 10 / Sorcerer 2 or Fighter 8 / Sorcerer 4 (for the Wraithstrike goodness). |

| #20tsuyoshikentsuApr 13, 2008 18:44:37 | As of Rules Compendium, a Wand of Wraithstrike is a swift action to activate. Have fun! |
