| #1deathwishjoeNov 04, 2005 15:06:57 | so Ive descovered an interesting way of becoming very powerful by 10th level. not Pun-Pun powerful but still broken. I was greatly inspired one day after reading the effigy optimization thread. So I thought while its nice to be able to have a powerful ally like that wouldn it be better if WE were like that. so with out further ado the build. wizard 5/ incantatrix 5 (we could just go wizard 10 but I like the incantatrix PrC) human extend spell feat 1 arcane discple (war) [good for when we can have persistent divine power] feat 3 craft wondrus item feat 5 craft magic arms and armor feat 6 craft construct feat 6 persistent spell feat 9 magical artisian feat 9 twin spell so not very impressive. but wait theres more. this character can also make constructs now. he now chooses to make an effigy of the following animal. warbeast, woodling, magebred, void mind, half-golem flesh, half-golem clay, half-golem stone, half-golem iron, winged, insectile, multiheaded(lernaean) X3 extra, feral, half-troll, spell warped, half Black dragon, half Blue dragon, half Green dragon, half Red dragon, half White dragon, half Brass dragon, half Bronze dragon, half Copper dragon, half Gold dragon, half Silver dragon, paragon, effigy, Ape. this construct has the following stats and abilities str: 177 dex: 36 con: - int: - wis: 11 cha: 1 AC 146 improved natural attacks 180 land, 90 climb, 360 ft fly (average) 250 HPs +25 to attack +20 to damage +10 to all saving throws +10 competence bonus skills So, yeah, hes pretty tough. but I want to be tough. having tough friends just isn't enough. So heres what we do. we make a secret chest with the spell of the same name. we tell the construct to accept any spell I will cast on it and then we cast magic jar and possess it. we then put my now life-less body into the large chest and put the chest into the astral plan. I then swallow the miniture chest used as a focus and the gem containing the elemental spirit that was inside the effigy. I now have an awsome body to go adventuring in for a great price. constructive criticism on the build is of course welcome. |
| #2aod318Nov 04, 2005 20:09:39 | And how long would it take to craft such a monster? No Swim speed? |
| #3dog45Nov 04, 2005 20:17:12 | yeah, cool, but....can you imagine having to draw a character portrait for that? what a pain. edit: also, im not sure if the speeds stack with each other, have to check that out. |
| #4deathwishjoeNov 04, 2005 20:18:09 | 25 days to create the item. *shrugs* not too much to do inbetween adventures. you can also use the special eberron haemonculus to make it for you while you adventure if you dont have that much down time. I never thought of adding a swim speed. I'd only really need it if I actually needed to go underwater as flying climbing and running cover most of my basics. but I think I need a burrow speed and a swimming speed for kicks and giggles. I've actually done some thinking on what this guy might look like. hes a four headed gorrilla, who's legs, torsoe and heads look to be made out of tree bark. his four arms represent each of the golem types. one for flesh, one for clay, one for stone and one for iron. the tree bark seemes to be ridged in a chittinouse armor pattern making it look like hes wearing armor. there also seems to be a faint texture on the bark that looks like scales of many different colors. he has two pairs of wings. the inside pair looks like a normal pair of bat wings, while the outer pair has a set of beatifully colored dragon wings with scales the color of skittles. [taste the rainbow *smiles*] |
| #5zombiegleemaxNov 04, 2005 20:22:46 | there are 9 Hells, and Infinite layers of the Abyss. |
| #6tiercelNov 04, 2005 20:29:48 | Are there any restrictions on what you can make an effigy of (besides, of course, the usual DM fiat)? I was sort of under the impression that making an effigy of a monster that in fact does not exist might be problematic... The text of magic jar seems a little ambiguous as to whether this would work. It looks like mechanically it would be fine, but the flavor text mentions moving the "soul" of your target (and then goes on to differentiate between undead with souls and those without, as if this distinction is important). If non-sentient undead can't be magic jarred, can non-sentient constructs? Finally (regarding the thread title), it is the Hells that have 9 layers. The Abyss, of course, has an infinite number of layers ;) [Edit: Blast, beaten to the punch while I was rereading magic jar. Heh.] |
| #7deathwishjoeNov 04, 2005 20:43:24 | I know theres nine layers in hell. I didnt actually know the abyss had layers but I knew which of the two was supposed to have the nine layers. I thought it funnier this way though. the effigy template can be added to any coporial aberration, animal, dragon, giant humanoid, magical beast, monstrous humanoid or vermin. as far as creating beast that arent possible (which this thing is technically possible acording to RAW) it would be like making a robot of a dragon. dragons aren't real but we can immagine them and therefore could make a robot of one. with the magic jar issue I noticed the part about non-sentient undead and what not and felt kinda bad that I was taking over something that wasnt sentient ether and didnt have an INT score so therefor was dumber then an animal. then I remembered that constructs actually have something in place of a soul that would allow for magic jar to work fluff wise as well as mechanicaly. they are powered by an elemental spirit and the spirit is taken from the golems body and put into the gem while my soul goes into the construct. |
| #8xaktsarothNov 04, 2005 20:48:24 | Not to be the party pooper, but don't the majority of those templates require a corporal LIVING target to apply them? Construct's ain't living. |
| #9batstekNov 04, 2005 20:51:20 | Yeah, but Effigy is applied last to the base creature. In this case, the base creature is the monstrosity created by all those templates. |
| #10deathwishjoeNov 04, 2005 20:52:58 | Not to be the party pooper, but don't the majority of those templates require a corporal LIVING target to apply them? yes that is correct. but I'm not appling, for instance the half dragon template to an effigy, I'm applying the effigy template to a half dragon. Once I apply effigy the only templates allowed would be ones that work on constructs. and there not many of them out there. fortunatly I apply it last. as there seems to be an issue with the title anyone got a name for this build? I'll use the name for the title instead of the nine layers abyss one we have now. |
| #11tsuyoshikentsuNov 04, 2005 21:00:28 | I have a title. Ultra Super Mega Mecha... er... Thing. |
| #12zombiegleemaxNov 04, 2005 21:02:54 | Yah ...... that’s all good and all till your DM tells you " sorry you can only apply a MAX of +5 level adjustments worth of templates before effigy" like any sane DM would. |
| #13deathwishjoeNov 04, 2005 21:30:46 | Yah ...... that’s all good and all till your DM tells you " sorry you can only apply a MAX of +5 level adjustments worth of templates before effigy" like any sane DM would. you my friend have just pointed out the true beauty of this build. unlike pun-pun or the HIVE this build can be toned down to be useable in a normal campaign. sure it has alot of broken potential but with a GM whoes willing to compromise you still get a great body to go adventuring in and maybe a few strong minions to help you out as well. besides this is the Char Op boards. we make things that no sain GM would allow. |
| #14xaktsarothNov 04, 2005 21:51:36 | yes that is correct. but I'm not appling, for instance the half dragon template to an effigy, I'm applying the effigy template to a half dragon. Once I apply effigy the only templates allowed would be ones that work on constructs. and there not many of them out there. fortunatly I apply it last. I got a title: Frank, the Crime against Nature. OR Frank, When Magic and Nature go wrong. |
| #15zombiegleemaxNov 05, 2005 0:21:15 | you my friend have just pointed out the true beauty of this build. unlike pun-pun or the HIVE this build can be toned down to be useable in a normal campaign. sure it has alot of broken potential but with a GM whoes willing to compromise you still get a great body to go adventuring in and maybe a few strong minions to help you out as well. Actually, both those builds can be toned done relatively easily. Though in the case of Pun-Pun, toned done can still be insane. Also, other half-dragons have been printed somewhere, I think. Draconomicon, maybe. Or Dragon magazine, but that's opening a whole 'nother can of worms. |
| #16deathwishjoeNov 05, 2005 2:25:54 | theres actually alot more templates around that could be added. I tried to just take a few that I knew of from the MM1, MM2, MM3, feind folio, savage species and the SRD. and thats not to say I didn't miss a few from the sources I listed off. in the effigy optimization thread they had a much bigger list of templates used but I read somewhere that the list wasn't done correctly or something and so I just made my own list. if anyone has any improvements for the build feel free to jump in. |
| #17primetimekillerNov 05, 2005 3:17:35 | dude you really do not need all the templates ... effigys are broken enought all by themselves... at level 10 my effgie master had his own WARTROLL at level 11th he had a FILBORG (STR 40) and a ?UROPHION? from lords of madness and by the way there is a better template then Effigy its in lords of madness too and callen Elder Eidolon well its more expensive but the abilieties are much better |
| #18umiskatonicNov 05, 2005 8:33:46 | I'm not sure the multiple dragon templates are legit. As I understand it, the first one makes you dragon subtype. That would invalidate you for all of the other half-dragon templates. However, there's no shortage of templates. I'd suggest looking at Crystal Keep's selection. |
| #19ronyonNov 05, 2005 9:34:46 | I must be missing something... How are you making the Soul Jar permanent? If it ends with you out of range, arent you dead? I understand there is a chance of losing the Chest-doesnt that worry you? |
| #20zombiegleemaxNov 05, 2005 9:44:38 | Yeah, I just have a quick question: Why not just go into Effigy Master? |
| #21primetimekillerNov 05, 2005 9:49:45 | if you really are allowed to stack templates on the creature then go for a Giant Squid (Animal) 26 Str, 17 Dex, +6 NA, 10 tenticle attacks, 1 bite attack, swim 80', constrict, improved grab, +8 swim Warbeast (Animal) +3 Str, +10' move Woodling (Animal) +7 Natural Armour, 1 Slam attack Magebred (Animal) +4 Str, +2 Dex, +2 NA, +10' move, Improved Natural Attacks Voidmind (Animal) +4 Str, +2 Dex, +4 NA, +4 Bluff, Escape Artist and Intimidate, Improved Grab, One Tenticle attack, +4 to grapple Half Golem [Brass, Clay, Dragonflesh, Flesh, Iron, Stained Glass, Stone] (Animal) +56 Str, -14 Dex, +52 NA, +2 Fortitude saves, Rage when damaged, 2 keen claw attacks Anthropamorphic (Humanoid) Katane (Humanoid) +2 Str, +2 Dex, +4 Listen, Hide, Move Silently and Spot Ghul (Humanoid) +2 str, +4 Dex, +2 Climb and Jump, Bite Attack Half-Satyr (Humanoid) +2 NA, +2 Perform Half-Nymph (Humanoid) +2 Dex Half-Rakshasa (Humanoid) +2 Dex, +4 NA, +10' movement Half-Janni (Humanoid) +2 Str, +2 Dex, +1 NA Draconic (Humanoid) +2 Str, +1 NA Feral (Monsterous Humanoid) Half-Troll (Giant) +6 Str, +2 Dex, +4 NA, Rend Half-Ogre (Giant) +4 Str, +2 NA Half-Scrag (Giant) +6 Str, +2 Dex, +4 NA Half-Minotaur (Giant) +4 Str, +2 NA, Gore attack, +2 search Half-Fey (Fey) +2 Dex, Fly speed (x2 land, good) Spell-warped (Aberration) +4 Str, +2 Dex, +2 NA Half-Dragon [x30, see MM and Draconomicon] (Dragon) +240 Str, +120 NA Winged (Dragon) Multiheaded (+2 heads, learnean) (Dragon) Paragon (Dragon) +15 Str, +15 Dex, max Hp +12/HD, x3 speed, +24 AC, +25 hit, +20 damage, +13 special attack DCs, +10 saves, +10 skills, +2 feats (take as weapon focus (tenticle) and multiattack) Effigy (Construct) +4 Str, -2 Dex, Con -, Int -, Wis 11, Cha 1, +2 NA, DR 3/Adamantine this should be the best you can get ;) most important bonuses are the +2 to search and preform :D |
| #22sir_todd_dupNov 05, 2005 9:58:13 | This is astonishing... Actually in my game we use a common sense rule reguarding most of those templates: You can only have one 'Half Something' template. Half Base Creature and one Half Template is all that genetics could create. After all being 50% of something numerous times is rediculous. Even still as it has been said, this is quite powerfull and intriguing. |
| #23kharmakazyNov 05, 2005 10:19:28 | in the BoED there is a construct that is basicly just a copy of any living creature.... including equipment.... special abilities and all. I would make copies of myself.... an army of construct me..... |
| #24deathwishjoeNov 05, 2005 11:21:05 | I'm not sure the multiple dragon templates are legit. you had me scared there for a moment as the stacking of the half dragon templates is where most of the bonuses come from. found this in the SRD. Half-dragon" is an inherited template that can be added to any living, corporeal creature (referred to hereafter as the base creature). any living corporeal creature would include another dragon. I must be missing something... this very problem had me worried when I was developing the build actually. I didnt want to loose my body to some crafty DM who would kill me indirectly by killing my body. thats why I swallowed the mini chest and soul gem I use. when it comes time to get back in my body I just throw them up (not that anything else would come up as the costruct doesnt eat) bring the chest back and open it and then move my soul where it belongs. the only way anyone will destroy my body is by destroying the construct the mini chest is inside. Why not just go into Effigy Master? I like incantatrix better and I dont think that he benifits gained from effigy master are worth giving up other abilities that could make for a stronger character. if you really are allowed to stack templates on the creature then go for a thats where I got the idea for my monstrosity unfortunatly for instance it adds winged after gaining the half dragon template which gives you wings. So I chose to make my own after the list became untrustworthy. some of the templates I just couldnt find to make sure they were legal as well. Actually in my game we use a common sense rule reguarding most of those templates: You can only have one 'Half Something' template. Half Base Creature and one Half Template is all that genetics could create. After all being 50% of something numerous times is rediculous. actually I was reading in savage species and it covers the adding of multiple half templates. it simply says that the name is changed to a smaller fraction but doesnt mention any lessening of bonuses. in the BoED there is a construct that is basicly just a copy of any living creature.... including equipment.... special abilities and all. whats it called? that might be interesting actually. |
| #25quenditarNov 05, 2005 11:21:08 | Unfortunately, if you're thinking of what I'm thinking of you need to be a god to make it. |
| #26zombiegleemaxNov 05, 2005 11:30:19 | You forgot to think about the awkward family reunion looming on the horizon for this character |
| #27insatiumNov 05, 2005 18:40:52 | The template you guys are thinking of is the Aleax, which is a strengthened copy of a character, usually a PC, sent by his or her deity to kill him or her for some disobedience or other similar gross sin. The PC *does* get some boni if the Aleax is slain, but... |
| #28deathwishjoeNov 06, 2005 4:25:53 | mmmm aleax is indeed a strong template. it unfortunatly doesnt add any ability bonuses except a small ammount of armor. its real power seems to come from its other abilties. I dont think these carry over after making it an effigy and I cant make my own aleax. in the description for effigy it says that it looses all the special qualities of the base creature. my question is what are special qualities and are all SU, EX and SP considered special qualities. |
| #29zombiegleemaxNov 06, 2005 5:58:02 | How do you magic jar a construct? Sure by RAW the construct can drop it's immunity to necromancy effects, but Id say he has neither a soul nor a lifeforce and is thus not a valid target for magic jar. Oops, missed the discussion about souls earlier ... but still, the life force issue wasn't mentioned yet. You can't posess what you can't detect. |
| #30oxybeNov 06, 2005 10:00:43 | that is just sick. i love it. what are the costs for building it (XP and GP)? we know the creation time is 25 days, but i am curious. does the time change depending on which build (primetimekiller's or the OP)? what is the LA on this thing anyways (im not planning on sending after PC's... honest :angelhide )? |
| #31zombiegleemaxNov 06, 2005 10:14:14 | Cost depends only on HD and size, time to build depends only on cost. |
| #32deathwishjoeNov 06, 2005 13:27:42 | the one I have created above costs 15000 GP and 800 XP to make. its expensive but well withing what someone at that level would have. I'm not really sure how many HD primetimes version has as anthropomorphic confuses me muey mucho. mine has ten HD and large body size. Im pretty sure his was large as well so it all depends on HD. Oops, missed the discussion about souls earlier ... but still, the life force issue wasn't mentioned yet. You can't posess what you can't detect. mechanically the life force issue seems to be based solely off HD. as my creature has HD and the rocks and such around me dont I can detect it while in the gem. when it comes to fluff wise we can look to the origins of making golems for how they have life forces. BTW this is based off of my poor understanding of someone elses religion and if I get something wrong I apologize. part of a golems creation process according to jewish myth is a mimicing of breathing life into a lifeless object much the way God breathed into adams lifeless form to create life. thus as one creates a construct one has to add a life force within it to give it a semblance of life. also if it has a soul it must have a life force (at least thats hwo I see it) |
| #33deathwishjoeNov 30, 2005 20:15:39 | for safe keeping |
| #34zombiegleemaxNov 30, 2005 20:19:32 | Another possible way to get docile bodies for magic jar. How about cursing a creature's intelligence to 1, diplomacying them to friendly and teaching them tricks with handle animal? |
| #35rabitDec 14, 2005 12:20:23 | so i went out and bought the complete arcane completely becuase of this thread. two thoughts on this build: 1.) in the description of what a effigy is it refers to it has having a "elemental spirit" wich animates it. by switching your soul with this spirit, would that not grant you control of the construct? i think thats enough to cover the magic jar soul problem. 2.) im sure i am missing something obvious but, it only refers to one template for the effigy. how do you combine all these together? i assume this is based on the concept of creating your own monster then using it as a template. |
| #36LokiynDec 27, 2005 0:00:00 | *looks around* "psst, hey party wizard you got PoA?" "yah....??" "turn these squirrel corpses into the corpse of a warbeast, woodling, magebred, void mind, half-golem flesh, half-golem clay, half-golem stone, half-golem iron, winged, insectile, multiheaded(lernaean) X3 extra, feral, half-troll, spell warped, half Black dragon, half Blue dragon, half Green dragon, half Red dragon, half White dragon, half Brass dragon, half Bronze dragon, half Copper dragon, half Gold dragon, half Silver dragon, paragon, effigy, Ape." "a WHAT?!?" "in theory its possible to breed one of these things but i'm impatient lets make a zombie and see what happens" "why am i in this party again" |
| #37mr.blackDec 27, 2005 2:52:02 | I think you should keep two things in mind. One. You play under a human DM. He's also needs to have fun in the game, and bringing in an overpowered creature says you don't respect him. This may eventually kill your game. Two. Constructs are immune to all necromantic effects (MM3.5 pg 307 under construct traits). This includes the spell Magic Jar (Necromancy). |
| #38lordofprocrastinationDec 27, 2005 3:15:20 | Hm. Mr. Black's first point is a non-issue on the Character Optimization boards, but the second is still valid. I know that Pinky's Brain mentioned that constructs can supposedly drop their immunity to necromantic effects on command, but I haven't heard any textual support for this yet. In any case, the issue can be overcome with the application of a single extra step to the process. Cast Humanoid Essence (Races of Eberron pg 186) on Mr. Roboto, and he'll lose his immunity to necromantic effects. Done and done. |
| #39deathwishjoeDec 27, 2005 4:55:30 | Hm. Mr. Black's first point is a non-issue on the Character Optimization boards, but the second is still valid. I know that Pinky's Brain mentioned that constructs can supposedly drop their immunity to necromantic effects on command, but I haven't heard any textual support for this yet. from the SRD. Spell Immunity from spell resistence A creature can voluntarily lower its spell resistance. Doing so is a standard action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity. Once a creature lowers its resistance, it remains down until the creature’s next turn. At the beginning of the creature’s next turn, the creature’s spell resistance automatically returns unless the creature intentionally keeps it down (also a standard action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity). One. You play under a human DM. He's also needs to have fun in the game, and bringing in an overpowered creature says you don't respect him. This may eventually kill your game. I slap every DM I meet with a bottle of fabreeze. If this doesnt ruin the game and say I dont repect him then nothing will. but seriously its not like Im saying anyone should play this build. Im just showing off a way of taking a known exploit and making a powerful character with it. I am in no way responsable if your DM calls Mr lincoln to destroy your character sheet. *sighs* Ive been reading too much red mage. *looks around* I'm of the opinion now that if your going to stack templates you might as well just stack the same one over and over again. like paragon. why do you ask? because Im lazy and all that template stacking makes me bored. Player: "how much does the door weigh?" DM: " uh... well... its made of solid adamantium and is roughly 200 ft high and 30 ft across so well say you need a STR of 400 to move it. any body got the required STR check?" *looks around knowingly at the players after asking his rhetorical question* Player: "not yet but just wait untill I craft my paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon, paragon version of myself effigy." DM: *spurts Mt Dew out of his nose* "just wait untill I craft my jigga what?" |
| #40lordofprocrastinationDec 27, 2005 5:02:59 | Indeed, spell resistance and spell immunity can be lowered. Other immunities are not the same. The immunity to necromantic effects is a trait of possessing the construct type, not a result of spell immunity. While what the quoted text was all true, it doesn't solve the issue at hand. We have yet to see evidence that all type-related traits can be altered at will. Good thing Humanoid Essence resolves this problem explicitly, eh? |
| #41deathwishjoeDec 27, 2005 5:48:36 | Sometimes spell immunity is conditional or applies to only spells of a certain kind or level. see I thought the immunity to necromancy spells fell under this line of spell immunity. spells of a certain kind should include spells of a necromanctic kind. and it does call it immunity. hence the useage of spell immunity. its like the construct type grants spell immuity to necromancy spells. at least thats how I'm reading it. Good thing Humanoid Essence resolves this problem explicitly, eh? Id rather not need to include ebberron things in the trick if I dont have to. so far it needs the PHB and CA. thats it. making it useable in allmost any campaign setting. |
| #42zombiegleemaxDec 28, 2005 13:13:08 | ...there's nothing preventing a lot of those templates from being applied multiple times. Even if this wasn't the case, you didn't list all the Half-Dragons out there. You'd need to make a list of every dragon, because they'd all fit. What's that, you say? How to figure out what the benefits a Half-Brain-Dragon or Half-Incarnum-Dragon or Half-Force-Dragon would get? It doesn't matter. They lose all their special abilities from being Effigy'ed anyway, so you can apply them assuming you have enough dragon types out there. Using the Soulfused Construct template from Magic of Incarnum is also another way to get a pseudo-Construct that can be inhabited. It gains the Living Construct subtype, which while opening up many weaknesses, also removes the Necromancy immunity. |
| #43bouncesJan 29, 2006 16:32:32 | I read through this after finding a link in the OPs sig...Very interesting and I found it top worthy...![]() :D |
| #44NezkrulMay 01, 2006 19:34:20 | how do you know about all those templates you can supposedly craft into an effigy without extra cost at level 10? some of them are pretty insane, and some epic (paragon)..? I'm guessing if I ask my dm if I can add a few templates to my effigies he'll say NO |
| #45lostoneMay 02, 2006 6:39:39 | how do you know about all those templates you can supposedly craft into an effigy without extra cost at level 10? some of them are pretty insane, and some epic (paragon)..? Knowledge checks should suffice for knowing about them. And as stated previously some types of templates can be applied multiple times. Like the Half-Dragon, it's a common template and you can apply it for every type of dragon your character knows about, so assuming he has a good knowledge arcana it wouldn't be unreasonable for him to know about 20 vareities of dragons. That right there is +160 strength. I'm guessing if I ask my dm if I can add a few templates to my effigies he'll say NO And that is his choice. A DM can rule zero anything. But if you approach him in the right way (especially if your effigies are getting destroyed left and right and your character is putting himself into poverty trying to make new ones just to keep up with the munchkin(s) in the group), he might allow a couple templates, like half-dragon. Probably not Paragon, unless he's just plain crazy. ![]() |
| #46NezkrulMay 02, 2006 10:25:15 | this is a little directed at LoP about his Nanobot idea: How about this build: Gnome Artificer 16 / Effigy master 3 / Maester 1 / Exemplar 8 / Wizard 3 ... by taking magical artisan (craft construct), the 3 artisan feats allowed for artificer, and the epic feat Efficient Item Creation (craft construct), you could theoretically mass produce trippedout templated effigies of 1hd and Fine size, and nano bot the crap out of the enemy, your party, and basically build stuff like mad. |
| #47RazieliffiedAug 18, 2006 22:43:28 | If the spell ends while you are in the magic jar, you return to your body (or die if your body is out of range or destroyed). If the spell ends while you are in a host, you return to your body (or die, if it is out of range of your current position), and the soul in the magic jar returns to its body (or dies if it is out of range). Destroying the receptacle ends the spell, and the spell can be dispelled at either the magic jar or at the host’s location. From the SRD. How do you get past the problem of the spell just running out? Duration:1 hour/level or until you return to your body Once again from the SRD. It appears that you would simply be kicked back into your original body or the magic jar after 10 hours. I dont mean to rain on your parade or anything, but I would like to play a realistic version of this, able to shift bodies here and there depending on the situation, but after looking at loopholes that the DM could argue with, I thought it could do with a little more development. :D |
| #48skbAug 18, 2006 23:41:25 | I shall call him FRANKENTEMPLATE...with a brain! |
| #49zombiegleemaxAug 19, 2006 0:52:28 | Why do I remember the monstrous manual mentioning templates modify HD count for certain purposes? IIRC, the above wouldn't be possible without a boatload of caster levels, one for every HD+LA less 3. I think I ran into that when I made my radiant dragon effigy... |
| #50prime361Jan 04, 2007 16:20:02 | You can save yourself the feats and the lvls for Craft: Construct by getting your first lvl in the Fleshcrafter class out of Dragon Magazine #312 pg 32. It gets Craft Constructs at lvl 1. Use the other 9 lvls as you wish. this however replaces your wizard classes as it is a variant of the wizard base class, and you cant have 2 of the same base class. Is this any good or does that break the build? Also how do you get so many HP? 250 at 10 HD with no con bonus? I believe you keep the same spell list and all, just specialize in necromancy/lose schools of magic for specialization. I am not sure where you get the effigy ability, but then I dont have all of the books yet, and I havent read all of the 50+ that i have available to me. |
| #51GhostStepperFeb 17, 2007 20:12:40 | The only problem i see with this idea is that the effigy tempalte does not get rid of the crazy LA youve built up. So youve made a creature that is LA 200 without really being LA 200 (because youve lost all your SQs and most of your good SAs) and thats all good because its not your character. Then you switch bodies and you literally ARE an LA 200 creature. Your DM now has the right to throw ECL 200 encounters at you because youve become an LA 200+ creature. |
| #52deathwishjoeFeb 17, 2007 20:29:33 | The only problem i see with this idea is that the effigy tempalte does not get rid of the crazy LA youve built up. If anyone actually used this character then yes this would be an acceptable solution by the DM. although at that point I just make a LA+2000 creature and defeat the enemy with that. so its kinda what we call around here game breaking. it leads into a game of escalation in which no one really wins and the game ceases to be fun. there are ways of negotiating with your DM to alter the rules so that this character can still be played. How do you get past the problem of the spell just running out? you stop before the time runs out and move back into your body and then cast the spell again. Why do I remember the monstrous manual mentioning templates modify HD count for certain purposes? it only increase your ECL which isnt calculated in the creation costs of effigies. Also how do you get so many HP? 250 at 10 HD with no con bonus? HD Is this any good or does that break the build? not really but many people here dont care to use dragon mag as there are many things in them that can be broken. am not sure where you get the effigy ability the "effigy ability" can be found in complete mage. you can make any effigy you want (up to a certain HD at least) with the craft construct feat. |
| #53awaken_D_M_golemMar 06, 2007 17:32:33 | Commoner 5 / Wizard 1 / EffigyMaster 1 Hook : "Lo-ahd , Ah've la-ed a tough lahf. Boht tahm Ah my-d sump'n of it. " Int of 10 or 11 , trait : very proud of accented common ... { kinda like my mama } I'm curious about Minor Servitor being updated in Spell Compendium into Awaken Construct ? with PHB2 stat rebuilding / quest , the Effigy would be extra nasty. Even with 'just' 2HD. btw , the name is : Revelat'ticia and Her Pimped Out Ride |

| #57ninja1Apr 23, 2007 14:35:05 | It would suppress Magic Jar. He wouldn't be expelled and thus killed, but his contol over the effigy would be stuffed. |
| #58deathwishjoeApr 23, 2007 14:40:40 | fortunatly for this character theres no magic circle against neutrality that I know of. |

| #61ninja1Apr 23, 2007 19:31:32 | fortunatly for this character theres no magic circle against neutrality that I know of. ;) Actually, the mental protection aspect of the "Protection from Blah" granted to all creatures (effigy included) by the "Magic Circle against Blah" is not alignment dependant. From the Protection family of spells: "This second effect works regardless of alignment." I hate to be the bearer of bad news, as I especiall like your effigy monster. I fully intend to steal some aspects of it for minions for an NPC of mine... just not the magic jar aspect. ;)
not soo much so... ![]() |

I did not know that! this is actually quite fascinating. thanks for the tidbit. it actually makes the protection spells much more usefull. |
| #63zombiegleemaxAug 04, 2007 19:26:18 | i may be off base here but what would be the effect of a antimagic field on this thing. it would not stop moving but your mini chest would and how do you breathe in that little chest.? |
| #64deathwishjoeAug 04, 2007 19:43:24 | your not in a mini chest your in a full sized chest thats in another plane. the mini chest you speak of is just the focus for the spell. I dont think an antimagic feild would effect this spell. however the magic jar spell might put you back into the gem. to prevent this and other spells like a MDJ I suggest using a shaped antimagic feild with a hole in the middel for you to stand. if you come in contact with another one they'll cancel each other out and you get to hope the eny fails a caster level check for the MDJ. |

Its not that they cancel each other its that they created the same effect that can't be doubled. (like casting darkness on 2 coins and having them overlap.) |
| #67strange_personSep 19, 2007 22:26:12 | Why not just have someone cast Hibernate (frostburn) on you, and pack a bunch of Longbreath into the chest? |
| #68tofu6564Oct 22, 2007 22:48:02 | I don't see how your even adding a template to a effigy creature. When you look under size and type of a effigy creature it says it loses ALL subtypes and does not gain the augmented subtype. That and a construct would be considered soul-less so how would the magic jar of it even work because I don't see where it talks about elemental spirt. |
| #69think0028Oct 22, 2007 23:32:24 | I don't see how your even adding a template to a effigy creature. He adds the effigy template to the templated monster. As for the elemental part, not sure myself. Need to do more research. |
| #70tofu6564Oct 22, 2007 23:52:35 | Well I understand he is making a creature with templates and then adding the effigy on to it what I was talking about was from the way I'm reading it when you add the effigy template to a creature it takes off all other templates. "SIZE AND TYPE: The creatures type changes to construct. It loses all subtypes and does not gain the augmented subtype. Recalculate base attack bonus, saving throws, feats, and skills as desribed below" The way I'm reading that is if you have a templated creature when you add effigy those templates come off and you just have a base creature. |
| #71strange_personOct 23, 2007 0:04:03 | No, subtype and template are two very different things. |
| #72atomickitkatOct 23, 2007 3:44:32 | All that matters is that you can't make an effigy with the Fire/Cold subtypes and expect to keep those subtypes(and their immunities), but you can still get them back with some things(Mantle of the X Soul, X Berserker Feats, etc.). |
| #73ninja1Oct 23, 2007 9:57:33 | The way I'm reading that is if you have a templated creature when you add effigy those templates come off and you just have a base creature. Ahh, but it doesn't say to do that... Imagine this, instead of building a giant robot... you're building a giant robot with a scale like skin covering, bulkier muscle type mechanisms, wicked sharp teeth, and sharp claws. ;) |
| #74tofu6564Oct 23, 2007 14:05:48 | Yea I guess I was reading it wrong cause I checked on it today and there is no rule that says you can't do it. Most DM's wouldn't allow it unless it was toned way down. Even without templates you are still a creature that is immune to crits, necromocy, poison, and all kinds of other stuff (except for maybe charms or mind influcing effects since you do have a mind) The only probelm is if someone gets that dispell off your toast. Other than that it would seem like a soild build. I would probely put a bottle of endless air around my mouth while my body was in status with a few contingenices from craft contingent just in case something happened to my body. |
| #75snakeman830Oct 23, 2007 14:53:14 | To make this montrosity worse, take a look in my sig (the first link) That will give you almost all the fun you could want and then some. |

| #79snakeman830Nov 06, 2007 15:49:08 | The real question to ask here is, where are you fnding the Paragon (dragon) What he was doing there was simply putting the template and then, in parenthases, writing the (current) type down, not naming templates. |

| #81proof100_dupNov 07, 2007 12:04:32 | Hell, with this build you might as well take Item Familiar and make your new body the familiar. Where is that? |
| #82mmshahNov 12, 2007 7:26:42 | In Races of the Dragon, you can't apply the half-dragon template to, non-living or dragon types. You can circumvent that thou by interleaving templates that change the type to Humanoid(shapechanger) with the Half-Dragon ones, or by changing the type to any living type above Dragon on the type pyramid and making sure you apply anything that changes type to construct or undead (non-living) after all half-dragon templates have been added. |
| #83JanusJonesNov 12, 2007 9:19:24 | There's a way to do this from first level. Find the original thread here.
This is NOT, mind you, HD limited - it's limited only by size and humanoid shape. Glooms, from the Epic Level Handbook, would be viable choices. Yay for template-stacking insanity! |
| #84deathwishjoeNov 12, 2007 9:43:50 | I dont think gloom is an allowable form according to RAW as its a monsterous humanoid and not humanoid. The template stacking however works just fine. |
| #85JanusJonesNov 12, 2007 10:19:27 | It STARTS monstrous, then is modified by templates, becomes a construct, then is re-incarnated as a human thanks to the Incarnate Construct quality, to which we apply a lycanthropic template (with the alternate form ability). Now we have a lycanthropic humanoid with retarded stats, which we can take the alternate form ability of to turn into a crazy, wiggy, lycanthropic hybrid monstrosity. At level 1. Enter Mini Pun. |
| #86deathwishjoeNov 12, 2007 10:46:35 | So I had a ridiculus idea of a were-human human and it amused me to make a character based off of this concept. however it states in the lycanthropy description the alternate form has to be of the animal type. are there any templates that change you from human to animal? |
| #87atomickitkatNov 12, 2007 12:38:45 | Closest I can find is magical beast via Primeval. Not sure it gets any lower.![]() |
| #88betasquirrellJan 21, 2008 9:50:38 | Sorry for the thread necro and a cross-post, but I thought this should be mentioned at the home base of this idea: Human Clr 1 (Domains Summoner and Death) Feats: Human: Domain Focus (Summoner) Level 1: Craft Wondrous Item Flaw 1: Craft Magic Arms and Armor Flaw 2: Craft Construct Items: Ruby Skull of Wee Jas Your CL for Summoner Domain spells is: 1 (Clr 1) 2 (Summoner Domain Bonus) 1 (Ruby Skull of Wee Jas) 1 (Domain Focus) 5 (Enough for CL prereqs) |
| #89awaken_D_M_golemApr 05, 2008 15:05:00 | Thought Bottle + a whole bunch of wishes via Efreet. Be 4th level plus a minimum of 500 exp. Stick the exp into the Thought Bottle. Be a 3hd something with a +1 LA. You are 4th level, so you can buy off the LA. Ok now you are 3rd level, and you Wish to acquire a template with LA +1. Efreet says sure. Now you are a 3hd something with a +1 LA. repeat. repeat with all +1LA templates. Further afield, you can get the +1 LA from higher than +1LA races, you just need an extra Wish, which you have from the next Efreet in the line. Can't be too sure what you'd get, though. Further further afield, is everyone's favorite the Tauric Template and worse, the Symbiotic template. Result - a 4th level character with every template in the game - brought to you by Thought Bottle. |
| #90brainpiercingApr 05, 2008 21:08:00 | Thought Bottle + a whole bunch of wishes via Efreet. Yeah, and those efreet will just be queuing there to shove their wishes up your little lvl 4 butt. It works - at reasonable levels. Not at level 4 though - unless you really have some more tricks up your sleeve. However, any DM who allows a thought bottle is insane, anyway. |
| #91NezkrulApr 06, 2008 7:31:44 | Level 1: Craft Wondrous Item at level 1 you dont have any items when making your character. you can't be basically born with a ruby skull of wee jas sticking out of your butt. sorry bro, this don't work at all, ever. |
| #92awaken_D_M_golemApr 06, 2008 14:37:31 | Yeah, and those efreet will just be queuing there to shove their wishes up your little lvl 4 butt. It works - at reasonable levels. Not at level 4 though - unless you really have some more tricks up your sleeve. This whole thread is theoretical. There is an NPC 2 is every little hamlet / thorp. Can a level 4 character kill one in his sleep? Yep. Now go buy yourself a Planar Ally from that Wizard you know. Heck, just use your own money and let the npc 2 be. Thought Bottle - K said "That wonderful trinket from Complete Arcane." Google The Wish and The Word. Lesser Mr. Roboto on a lower level character directly, instead of indirectly, with an extra trick or two. Seemed a reasonable place to put this. I think I'll pat myself(s) on my back(s). |
