| #1mathias1313May 19, 2009 20:50:12 | I was wondering if I could get some help from you guys. I am starting a new campaign and I will be running thru Dragon Mountain, which is an interesting 2E boxed adventure which I have spent alot of time converting to 3.5. First off, here are the house-rules: ---stats with one at 18 and the other 5 at 10 with a 28pt standard point buy system ---Feat progression = the fighter feat progression ---Allowed up to 2 flaws ---Start with 1 Background feat( stuff like Stealthy applies also ) ---Start with up to 2 traits from Iron Kingdoms ---Any racial skill bonus, skill focus or bonus from a backrgound feat ( like stealthy) cound against PRC prereq's. Yes I know that means you can enter alot of PRC's early. ---every time you get a stat increase from lvling (ie every 4 lvls) you apply +2 or two +1s. ---LA buy off is ok but no multi stacking template and no crazy templates ---Pretty much any book is up fro use, including alot of the dragon material ---starting lvl is 12 What I would like from the Opti board are build ideas for various nps in the game as well as 2 DM run npcs. The guy I will be running thru this will have 2 characters I will assign 2 more or I might present him with 4 or 6 guys and he will have to choose the 2 he takes with him. So you know what to aim at, the adventure up to the mountain is kinda of tough with fights against tough bosses and their minions who use some good tactics. However when you get in the Mountain, you fight almost entirely Kobolds. Seeing as how kobolds rock a fair bit in 3.5 as opposed to 2E I made the majority of the Kobolds met lvl3 rogues with swarmfighting and deft opportunist because that to me screams Kobold. I have included some higher lvl kobolds of course for some of the tougher fights. SO if you could please, come up with some build ideas that are full lvl 20 progressions as ideas that I can use as optional NPCs for the player as well as maybe some ideas for the player himself as I dont think he has solidified what he would like to play yet. Thanks in advance for any and all help. |

If you get higher level kobolds, in addition to sorcerers, Combat Trapsmith should work nicely with kobolds. http://www.d20srd.org/srd/traps.htm You'll want CR 1-6 traps, I think, so that's DC 20-25. You can hit DC 23 at level 1 with take ten, masterwork tools and skill focus. A level 3 rogue can EASILY set up a DC 25 trap. At higher levels, a 14th level sorcerer can use Minor Creation for setting up a trap. In one minute. For free. Actually, worst case DC for trapcrafting is DC 40. By default we'll get +22 with skill focus and maxed skill. An unseen Seer can cast Divine Insight for another +15 to the check, leaving us with the need to roll a 3, presuming an int of 10 and no int-boosters. So we spend one minute to cast minor creation, creating a mostly-wooden trap, with : Search and Disable DC of 30+ Reflex Save DC 30+ OR (touch) attack bonus +20-24. Say, a variant RELOADING AUTO-TRIGGER crossbow bolts each with Black Lotus extract. RAW, you could have an arbitrary amount of these, ( with 2d6 more potential damage just increasing the CR, but since the DC caps, that doesn't bother us. ) but basically, a Sorcerer with craft trap know-how and a bit of unseen seer can craft ANY mechanical trap at level 14-16. In one minute. It'l only last for the day, but, hey, whatever. So, in practice, just pick traps you like, of appropriate arbitrary CR, and every time players sleep, you can have those set up anywhere an invisible sorcerer can go. ( snatch eschew and still, and you'll be casting those spells practically in undetectable-mode. ) Oh, and Tucker's Kobolds. |

I am starting a new campaign and I will be running thru Dragon Mountain, which is an interesting 2E boxed adventure which I have spent alot of time converting to 3.5. I'd seriously reconsider those house rules. At least, you should have a very good idea what you are trying to achieve with each one of them, and what consequences the rule might have. With the PrC qualification rule, for example, you could qualify for Ur-Priest at level 4 if you take the 2 Skill Fokus feats and the two prerequisite feats. A Bard1/Duskblade2/Urpriest9 has the potential for 9th level spells right when the game starts (i.e., at ECL 12). I don't think that's what you want. |
| #4mathias1313May 20, 2009 10:29:36 | Senevri: thank you very much t=for the trapping ideas, I will put those to good use. I also forgot about 2 other house rules: ---All spell casters come with eschew materials for free and there are no spells higher than lvl 6 but you can use the higher lvl spell slots to power metamagiced spells or you can break up the slots to ue on lower lvl spells. I know the house rules are pretty crazy but my friend and I only get to play twice a month and then only if we have no other plans. So we came up with these rules to make the play a little more loose and powerfull since when we start there wont be alot of lvling quickly since we dont play alot. |
| #5mathias1313May 20, 2009 22:39:01 | So does anyone have any build ideas for the Npc's? |
| #6mathias1313May 21, 2009 19:56:53 | Bump for some help ![]() |
| #7SenevriMay 22, 2009 7:36:00 | The thing about builds is, many of them only work after a certain point. You can't expect them to pwn at every level. Also, Google is your friend. http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=683941 From Handy Links: http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=6972406&postcount=2 |
| #8EndarireMay 25, 2009 19:14:18 | Do you have a PDF or DOC for this conversion? |
| #9mathias1313Jun 02, 2009 14:51:08 | Unfortunately no, I dont have a pdf or anything for the Dragon mountain conversion. Actually I just went thru and found each encounter and redid the builds for each enemy. A few of the battles are with lower lvl humans, so alot of the builds were based on teamwork. Stuff like Shield wall, phalanx fighting, trippers, Archers well placed. Stuff like that. |
| #10davidwlJun 04, 2009 3:07:01 | Gives you any 6th level spell with a 20 CL, + etc. With that many feats you could play a pretty mean shadowcraft mage. With the LA buyoff, any character should have a +2 template. Half Celestial (from BoED), Shadow, and Half-Fey are all very good. I'd probably play: ( Level 12 + no spells over 6th =>) Half Celestial (Or Shadow) Illumian Factotum 1/Cleric 1/Chameleon 10 Feats: - Skill Focus (Bluff) - Skill Focus (Diplomacy) - Able Learner - Circle Magic - Leadership - Extend - Persistent - 2 more + 2 domains (Luck, Pride ?) Take the Illumian variant that lets you use metamagic for free when you give up turning, twice per day. Best, David |
| #11mathias1313Jun 19, 2009 10:07:25 | Thanks DavidWL, that actually looks interesting. I know some of the rules make it easier to get into some prcs, have any other build ideas that might fit into the criteria I set above? |
| #12dr_rocktopusJun 19, 2009 13:38:15 | I'm not sure how that qualifies for chameleon, as chammie has skill reqs. |
| #13mathias1313Jun 19, 2009 18:31:18 | Well part of the house rules that I posted above are that feats like Skill focus or Stealthy or any racial skill bonus come off the Skill req of a PRC. Thus if a PRC needs Bluff = 8, normally you could only get in at lvl 5. However with the houserule you could enter at lvl 2. |
| #14theendisnearJun 20, 2009 7:21:19 | I find this funny (Tuckers Kobold) because it reminded me of something. I love kobolds, specially when I DM. For fun, in a level 10 gestalt game, I had used Paragon (ELH) Kobolds instead of trolls/ogres and the like. One thing I love. Make a party of (number of PC) kobolds with class level, Spellthief//Sorcerer was great for gestalt, and make them like tuckers kobolds, steal buffs, focus on this: Invisibility (greater if you wish) Benign/Baleful Transposition and the likes Rays *ZAAP* "OMFG LOOK A KOBOLD!" *POOF* where it go? "I got See invisibility!" *ZAAP* (Spellthief) "OUCH, but I still don't see them" Once for epic, I leveled them up to level 10-15 Greater invisibility Deceptive spell Silent spell Arcane thesis: Enervation or Wings of Flurry (to be absolutly EVIL) Master spellthief Sorcerer/Spellwarp Sniper/Incantrix//Spellthief Watch out for the TPK D-End |
