| #1shined_blindApr 16, 2010 14:41:09 | erdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">This will be my first time playing a magic caster, so if I'm doing anything wrong, please tell me. --- Alexander Hannibal: Sorcerer Extrordinaire! Desert Kobold variant(Constitution penalty switched to Wisdom) Venerable Level 1 HP: 4 Strength: 6 Dexterity: 16 Constitution: 12 Intelligence: 19 Wisdom: 13 Charisma: 21 Fort: 1 Reflex: 3 Will: 3 Base Attack Bonus: +0 Did Draconic Rite of passage. Lost 1hp. Gains a level 1 sorcerer spell as a spell like ability, usable 1/day. I chose Silent Image. My DM has allowed this without taking a hit to my gold, so I still have 12 gp to spend. Level 1 feat: Dragonwrought Spells known: Level 0: 4 Level 1: 2 Level 0 spell list: Ghost Sound Detect Magic Prestidigitation Message Level 1 spell list: Silent Image Ray of Enfeeblement?/Colorspray?/Grease? --- My DM is allowing me to be a dragonwrought kobold. Awesome. This hasn't seen play yet, so I can change just about anything. I'm unsure of my DM's allowing of flaws. I won't be taking loredrake, unless I really need it(which I won't). My DM isn't sure of which level we'll be starting, but it would be at highest, 4, and lowest 1. We were given these stats to work with: 10, 12, 12, 14, 16, 18. I can switch them around should I need to, but as of now they look pretty good to me. 18 Charisma, 16 Intelligence, 14 Dexterity, 13 Wisdom, 12 Constitution, 6 Strength. So far in the party, we're going to have a rogue for sure. And two possible clerics, though one player is relatively new. One of the clerics will be combat/buffing oriented, and the other more buffing/whatever else a cleric can do that isn't bash things. My job in the party will be to set things up for others. General battlefield control. I understand a wizard may be better at it, but at this point a sorcerer looks more interesting for me to play. If I debuff and battlefield control me being dragonwrought won't make the group look at me funny, as its more of a backseat operation. What I'm wondering is... What the heck do I do for progression? My level 3 feat is going to be draconic resevoir from the web enhancement, to allow me to do the greater draconic rite of passage for a caster level. Then what would be some good options? If I get a flaw, I'm thinking I'd like to get "Dragon Wings", and then Improved Dragon Wings for flight speed. Tips? Ideas? Other information that may be needed that I haven't put up? Also... How do I prestige as a sorcerer? Early as possible I understand, since sorcerer doesn't add anything. Would taking Mindbender be decent as a one level dip? Thank you. --- Hah, I was excited while writing this, excuse me. I've looked at everything again and it should make more sense to the rest of you. First level feat: Dragonwrought Third level feat: Dragon Wings Sixth level feat: Draconic Resevoir That sets everything up to, my understanding, the most optimal levels of taking without flaws or DM intervention of feat addition. I'm hoping I can trade out my familiar to make the feats look something like this: First level feat: Dragonwrought Substitution/Flaw feat: Dragonwings Third level feat: Draconic Resevoir Sixth level feat: Mindsight See the way I figure it, is I'd get a toad anyways for the +3 hp, which is toughness, but even more benefits. Feats aren't created equal so if he(the DM) found it unbalancing for me to get some wings for toughness, I'd probably try and chip in my racial weapon proficiencies and familiarity. Probably doesn't work like that, and if you have a better idea, please enlighten me. |
| #2phaedrusxyApr 16, 2010 16:04:02 | Mindbender is an awesome 1 level dip if you can take Mindsight. If you can't, you can just use the Message Cantrip for discreet party communications. Sandshaper is a great 1 level dip for a sorcerer also, as it adds a ton of known spells. It does cost you a caster level, though. I recently made an "all cheese" version of one of these, and got quite a lot of advice for picking spells known, which is the most critical part of any sorcerer build. Here is the thread on it: brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.p... If you can use Incantatrix, it is hands down the best arcanist PrC. You may have a harder time making the spellcraft DCs than a wizard would, though, especially if Item Familiars and other similar cheese aren't allowed. |
| #3shined_blindApr 16, 2010 16:50:49 | Would the Draconic Rite of Passage restrict me to level 1 sorcerer spells I know? "Benefi t: Upon completing this rite, a kobold chooses any 1st-level sorcerer spell. He can now use that spell once per day as a spell-like ability, using his character level as his caster level. Each day, a kobold must complete the Searching for the Dragon meditation (see above) in order to recharge this spell-like ability for the day." That makes me think it doesn't need to be something I know, as I bolded. This would allow me to use Charm Person, and not "waste" a spell known to qualify for mindbender. Technically I could qualify for the class at level six, with intimidate, diplomacy, and sense motive being cross class skills. Is mindsight worth the feat at six? Or would the improved wings(flight speed) be worth it(assuming I'm allowed a flaw.) |
| #4phaedrusxyApr 17, 2010 11:10:03 | No, it doesn't have to be a spell you know. You don't even have to be a sorcerer at all to undertake the rite. You can know zero spells and still gain the benefit. |
| #5shined_blindApr 19, 2010 12:34:41 | My spell advancement should look like this: Level 0's- Ghost Sound (Sorcerer 1) Detect Magic (Sorcerer 1) Prestidigitation (Sorcerer 1) Message (Sorcerer 1) Mage Hand (Sorcerer 2) Detect Poison (Sorcerer 4) Read Magic (Sorcerer 6) Resistance (Sorcerer 8) Arcane Mark (Sorcerer 10) Level 1's- Silent Image (Sorcerer 1) Grease (Sorcerer 1) Ray of Clumsiness (Sorcerer 3) Magic Missle (Sorcerer 5) Mage Armor (Sorcerer 7) Level 2's- Glitterdust (Sorcerer 4) Ray of Stupidity (Sorcerer 5) or Wings of Cover(RoTD) -Didn't notice this one at all, It looks amazing! Mirror Image (Sorcerer 7) Invisibility (Sorcerer 9) Level 3's- Hold Person (Sorcerer 6) Fireball (Sorcerer 7) Slow (Sorcerer 9) Level 4's- Enervation (Sorcerer 8) Black Tentacles (Sorcerer 9) Level 5's- Telekinesis (Sorcerer 10) I've only done the first 10 levels of sorcerer spell progression as the highest in any of the games we've played has been seventh level(We're probably going to level up this next session on Friday to 8, though.) These all look good to me, so if you see any spells I've missed that SHOULD be on here, please say something. I found the majority of these on a sorcerers handbook, so I know they're fairly good(and I looked them over as well.) So far I'm thinking I can do my build like this... 1. Sorcerer: Dragonwrought, Dragonwings(Flaw, or substitution) 2. Sorcerer 3. Sorcerer Draconic Resevoir 4. Sorcerer 5. Sorcerer 6. Mindbender 1 Mindsight After the level of Mindbender, I'm unsure what to do. Going back to sorcerer isn't optimal seeing as how there aren't any class features to gain. I lose nothing by prestige dipping(should they have caster progression at the first level). Prestiging for a Sorcerer feels kind of weird, to be honest. I'm really unsure of where to take this, other than wanting to continue to maintain a full(or as near as possible) caster progression. |
| #6spiral_rider_hApr 19, 2010 18:07:15 | My build design for a Dragonwrought Kobold sorcerer uses Mage of the Arcane Order and Incantarix. Feats would change a fair amount compared to what you do, but here we go: 1. Sorcerer [Dragonwrought, Cooperative Spell (flaw), Blistering Spell (flaw)] Now your mileage may vary on the metamagic selection (I like subbing to fire for cheap bumps to damage. Probably not optimal.), but the concept is there. |
