| #1agahi_renemMar 17, 2008 19:16:33 | The dread necro spell list is pretty non utility. I was wondering what some slick ways of getting a few utility spells, and pass a dread necro off as a wizard for a bit. I would like to get Teleport, and maybe a polymorph spell. Also desecrate would be nice, as I dont see that on the spell list. I was originally thinking going dread necro untill level six, and then wizard, but then 9th level spells would be out the window. I am the DM, so any book should be fine, also, any cheap magic items would be ok. |
| #2bensanMar 17, 2008 19:23:22 | Arcane Disciple is the most common way of doing it if you have the Wis to pull it off. Evil domain gets you Desecrate, Travel gets you all kinds of nice goodies including Teleport. Unfortunately, you'll only get each once per day. Prestige classes that grant domains will add them to your list properly, though. If you don't mind a whiff of cheese, use Southern Magician to qualify as a divine caster and take Contemplative or other PrCs that add domains (Contemplative is likely the best if Sovereign Speaker isn't available). Divine Oracle is a nice easy-to-qualify-for class that gives a domain with a bunch of utility divinations, too. |
| #3andyjamesMar 17, 2008 19:31:35 | Sandshaper PrC (Sandstorm). 43 spells known instantly at level 1. You lose a caster level, though. Also, you might want to look at the Ultimate Magus PrC in Complete Mage if you want to go spontaneous arcane/prepare spell arcane multiclassing. |
| #4wihMar 17, 2008 19:36:49 | Rainbow Servant's 10th level ability gives you the entire Cleric spell list. Text over Table means that you don't lose any casting, but it'd be a matter of running it past your GM. And running really, really fast I mean. Sandshaper's a pretty good option tho, and no-one where as dubious. |
| #5andyjamesMar 17, 2008 19:41:03 | I was trying to stay away from RS. You will hear howls of outrage 3... 2... 1... :D |
| #6wihMar 17, 2008 19:57:02 | I was trying to stay away from RS. You will hear howls of outrage 3... 2... 1... Thus the running fast. I'm getting on my running shoes. ![]() |

Text over Table doesn't apply here, because all later printings of that book make the text agree with the table... 6/10 casting for Rainbow Servant. JaronK |
| #8andyjamesMar 17, 2008 20:05:46 | With makes RS totally useless as far as a straight caster is concerned. So, joy to the world... |
| #9bensanMar 17, 2008 21:25:19 | Sandshaper PrC (Sandstorm). 43 spells known instantly at level 1. You lose a caster level, though. Sandshaper gives a lot of spells but none of them address what the OP said he wanted. It's not a bad choice for a Dread Necro but for what was requested the feats and levels are better spent towards other PrCs. |
| #10true_shinkenMar 17, 2008 21:33:02 | Text over Table doesn't apply here, because all later printings of that book make the text agree with the table... 6/10 casting for Rainbow Servant. Except not. The printing in portuguese has 10/10 casting in both text and table. |
| #11andyjamesMar 17, 2008 21:37:31 | He wanted more spells. He got more spells. If he wants to dual Wizard with DN, then Ultimate Magus is his bestest friend in all the world, although I'd do it with a Beguiler (for single stat casting instead of dual). However, if he insists, then the following build is fairly good: DN 2/Focused Conjurer (with that teleport sub) 3 Dropped schools: Evocation, Necromancy, Enchantment Personally, I'd go Beguiler instead of DN, and drop Illusion, Enchantment and Evocation. That way, it is same casting stat, and the Beguiler covers the schools you dropped (Conjuration covers Evocation). But that is neither here nor there. |
| #12andyjamesMar 17, 2008 21:40:30 | Except not. The printing in portuguese has 10/10 casting in both text and table. Well, this is interesting. Something that the anti-RS guys have never mentioned. They have mentioned the French printing, though, which supports their side of things. It sort of makes sense as 6/10 is nerfed beyond belief. Even the Elemental Savant is only 8/10 and that thing can give you permanent Fly 100ft (perfect) at the end of it, plus a whole bunch of immunities that WILL save a wizard's life. |

I am the DM, so any book should be fine, also, any cheap magic items would be ok. Step 1: Get the DM to allow the Dragon Compendium Step 2: Play a Death Master (presented therein) Step 3: ??? Step 4: Teleport. Or, if you still want to be a Dread Necromancer, the Arcane Disciple feat in CD can net you the Travel Domain, and every spell it grants. Problem with that is that it makes you very MAD, and is only 1/day for each spell. The other option is to kill something that has Teleport as an SLA, and reanimate it as a Corpse/Bone creature (they keep the base creature's abilities) and have it as your personal Soda B****. |
| #15jameswilliamogleMar 18, 2008 7:04:57 | There's a small list of how to get extra spells known with Dread Necro's in the DN handbook in my sig. The best methods have mostly been mentioned, but in addition there's also Fiend-blooded PrC, and the potentially much more powerful Corrupt Arcana. Those BoVD spells are wicked. |
| #16brainpiercingMar 18, 2008 7:45:07 | Arcane disciple, critters and Leadership are the normal ways for a single-class DN to get spells. Incidentally: A wizard with Arcane Disciple or a cleric can regain his domain spells with pearls of power. Is there any way to regain a spell like that with a DN or sorc? Pearls of Power, RAW, don't work. I suppose some DMs would allow themselves to be convinced that since a domain spell is a single-cast per day, a PoP should be able to regain it, even if it's not in a prepared slot. I'd even go so far to say that it would be worthwhile regaining just the spell, but not the slot, since a DN has tons of spells/day, anyway. Are there any other items that can regain spells or spell slots? |
| #17tshernMar 18, 2008 9:00:38 | Rainbow Servant's 10th level ability gives you the entire Cleric spell list. Text over Table means that you don't lose any casting, but it'd be a matter of running it past your GM. And running really, really fast I mean. Though in foreign translations the text says you get 6/10. I think it was an Italian book that was used as an example. |
| #18ChristopherGrovesMar 18, 2008 9:10:33 | I resurrected the old thread on expanding spell lists. It should be on the front page now. |
| #19monkey3Mar 18, 2008 9:48:22 | Please, no more RS arguments here. On a positive note, I'll add two options my DN is using (in addition to the Luck domain Divine Disciple): Feat: Mother Cyst - This gives you 10 new spells. Just about all are Save or Suck. The 7th level one gives you permanent slaves. Items: Runestaff of . These new items in the Magic Item Companion are a gift to DNs and Sorc everywhere. Feel free to have custom built ones made for your themed spells. To paraphrase, Runestaves add the spells to your "spells known" up to three times a day. For example, a Runestaff of Firyness with spells: [burning hands, scorching ray, fireball, wall of fire] allows to cast each of those spells 3 times a day by using up your own equal level spells. It is as if you knew and had prepared those spells in your 1, 2, 3, or 5th level slot. I hope that was clear. |
| #20bonzaiMar 18, 2008 10:04:56 | As a DM, I would allow a Beguiler or Dread Necro to take the eclectic learning varient that Warmage's get in the PHB2, as they get advanced learning as well. You may want to ask your DM about it. |
| #21xaktsarothMar 18, 2008 10:39:56 | Mage of the Arcane Order is often recommended for Warmages to add some variety to their spell list. If I'm remembering correctly, there's nothing stopping a Dread Necro from grabbing a spell he doesn't know from the Spellpool. Additionally, the req's for MOTAO are very forgiving. I recommend waiting till DN 8 to PrC out though, as DN 8 gives you the defining ability of the class(Yah, I know at 20 they get the Lich Template for free, but who plays a DN to 20? :P) |
| #22sinfire_titanMar 18, 2008 13:14:00 | Arcane disciple, critters and Leadership are the normal ways for a single-class DN to get spells. Memento Magica. Races of the Dragon. |
| #23agahi_renemMar 18, 2008 13:34:55 | 1.If you take a prc that gives domains, do the spells get added to the class that you advance spellcasting for, or your divine spell list? Contemplative gives four if you go 10 levels with it. That would be perfect, if it added the spells to DN spell list, or even if just allowed each spell to be cast 1/day. 2. In the above example, would you be able to use the class whose spellcasting you advance's casting ability, ex. for DN charisma? Or would you need Wisdom, as with arcane disiple? |
| #24sinfire_titanMar 18, 2008 17:37:48 | 1.If you take a prc that gives domains, do the spells get added to the class that you advance spellcasting for, or your divine spell list? If you don't all ready have Domain Spells, then the class feature is useless. |
| #25agahi_renemMar 18, 2008 18:46:23 | Err, I meant, with 1 level of cleric in order to qualify for the class it would end up with 4. |
| #26bensanMar 18, 2008 20:15:36 | Reread CD's Extra Domains. If you don't all ready have Domain Spells, then the class feature is useless. Uh.. did you read the Extra Domains section? For a spontaneous caster, it adds the domain spells to the class list, and they are then treated as normal spells on the class list. Presumably for casters who know their entire list they are added normally. The trick for Contemplative is to qualify Dread Necromancer as a divine spellcasting class so that Contemplative can advance it. Southern Magician or Alternative Source Spell will do this but smell somewhat of cheese. |
| #27agahi_renemMar 19, 2008 9:10:34 | What books have southern magician, and alternative source spell. Also thanks for the advice everyone. |
| #28risnerMar 20, 2008 10:51:38 | What books have southern magician, and alternative source spell. Also thanks for the advice everyone. Dragon Magazine. IIRC the text (RAW) of Alternate Spell Source says it stays an Arcane spell, but is casted like a Divine Spell (i.e. no ASF essentially.) There is also debate on Southern Magician, so pass it by your DM for his take. |
| #29the_shamanMar 21, 2008 3:52:50 | I don't have Frostburn atm, but Frost mage gives a few spells known and some of its abilities are quite tolerable for a dread necro's offensive spells |
