Ok so I was building a Dread Necromancer but I wanted to make something different. I wanted to take advantage of the Rebuke Undead features and quickly realized that most Divine Feats weren't not worth it.

Then, I stumbled this feat in Complete Champion (emphasis mine) :

See if you can Dark Lore of Moil spells to apply this?

I think we got something, it seem pretty clear that Holy Potency apply to "other negative-energy spell". As there is no [Negative Energy] subschool, it looks like it's based on the type of damage it deals.

I've long thought that 3.5 needs [negative energy] and [positive energy] descriptors. Would be really useful.

So true, according to the PHB, a negative energy effect is described as " A black, crackling, energy that originate on the Negative Energy Plane. In general Negative Energy heal undead and harm living"

I know we usually rule that if it gets blocked by Deathward, it's most of the time negative energy. Finger of Death seem pretty obvious that it's a negative energy effect.

You can

25 gp+Dark Lore of Moil+Finger of Death+Chain Spell (from a metamagic rod)+Holy Potency

yields a finger of death with save dc of

10+7+Cha*2

-4 from being Chained. It is still horribly nasty. :D

Well the main target, the BBEG doesn't get the -4, all his minions do get the -4 though.

And if they pass they save they still take some damage.

Considering Cha 30 (which is quite easy to get) you would get a monster 17 (base)+2 (SF&GSF) + 20 (CHA x2) = 39 or die and 35 for the chained targets.

Looks like it work pretty well. My 1st CO find

Yeah, it is a great find. Complete Champion looks to be chock full of overpowered crap. Maybe I should try to work this into my deity build for the Iron Siege. With his monstrous Charisma, that would be a +35 to his DCs. :P

Can I claim partial credit for using Moil to apply it to any damaging spell? :D

Actually I'm AFB - what spells can you apply Moil to?

Of course ! Actually it enable to apply the trick to every Necromancy spells !

Moil can be applied to any Necromancy Spell which mean pretty much all your spell list as a Dread Necro

Shame there's no way to make spells of other schools into Necromancy - though you could try researching a custom Necromancy spell that does something very similar.

So the complete combo is:

Dread Necromancer + Holy Potency + Black Lore of Moil + Quicken Turning; you might also want to add Rapid Metamagic or even Arcane Preparation since you're Moiling many spells.

I think I'll post this in the Dread Necro handbook thread.

What amaze me is that we kinda found a use to quicken turning :D

Would Lord of the Uttercold extend this to Cold spells(and any energy spell Energy Subbed as such)?

Would Lord of the Uttercold extend this to Cold spells(and any energy spell Energy Subbed as such)?

Correct.

Silverbrow Human

Cloistered Cleric 1/Sorcerer 4/Dweomerkeeper 10/X 5

Snowcasting+Eschew Materials+Draconic Aura Cold+
+Energy Subsitution Cold+Lord of the Uttercold+Flash Frost Spell+Rapid Metamagic
+Holy Potency+Quicken Turning+Chain Spell

Total of 10 feats

Effect, all your spells have the cold descriptor, due to flash frost spell they now do cold damage. Since they have the Cold Descriptor Draconic Aura boosts the dcs by 4. Lord of the Uttercold makes the damage done be part cold damage and part negative energy. Thus you can now use quicken turning with Holy Potency to double your charisma modifer to the dcs.

Thus combine with nightsticks and you will have pretty much unstoppable dcs.

Now how to reduce the number of feats....chain can be a metamagic rod, didn't one location give you a metamagic feat for free but only for a certain number of times (use it on energy substitution for that is just a prerequisite feat)...

Yea I would think so but the problem is that the Dread Necro doesn't get real good [cold] spells.

Edit : nice build Pheonix00, would be pretty hardcore to fit everything in tho :s

Damn, can't believe I missed Lord of the Uttercold. Yeah, that'll work, especially with Flash Frost (and Snowcasting and Eschew Materials etc)

OMG... could you even do Dread Necromancer 6/Incantatatrix 10/DN +4? That would make all the metamagic easier to get hold of and use.

Using the Otyugh Hole to qualify and Incantatrix would help a lot on the feats requirements. It's a pretty good idea !

Why Dread Necro instead of Sorcerer for Incantatrix? Dread Necros rock at controlling undead and eventually getting more lich like.

When you water down Dread Necro you lose the 8th level ability, or delay it tremendously, when you do so you weaken dread necro.

Better just to do a Cleric 1/Sorcerer

And you can do an Incantatrix build with Sorcerer and pick even better saves or loses than those that are on the dread necro list.

Metamagic Storm was the location I was thinking in Complete Mage. It gives you a bonus metamagic feat for 5,000 gp, there seems no limit to it besides it only lasts 1 year (which you then can recharge it).

This is taken from the book, Complete Champion.
To use this maneuver, you must first attempt to rebuke undead, then make an attack with an inflict spell (or other negative-energy spell) against a living creature in the following round.

It will only take effect the following round and not in the same round. But still doesn't make it any less powerful.

A build

Cleric 1
Sorcerer 1
Sorcerer 2
Sorcerer 3
Sorcerer 4
Sorcerer 5
Sorcerer 6
Incantatrix 1
Incantatrix 2
Incantatrix 3
Incantatrix 4
Incantatrix 5
Incantatrix 6
Incantatrix 7
Incantatrix 8
Incantatrix 9
Incantatrix 10

Feats
Level, Source, Feat taken
1 Start Eschew Materials
1 Human Snowcasting
1 Flaw Draconic Aura Cold
1 Flaw Flash Frost Spell
-- Magical Location Iron Will
-- Magical Location Chain Spell
3 Normal Feat Quicken Turning
6 Normal Feat Free
9 Normal Feat Holy Potency
12 Normal Feat Rapid Metamagic
15 Normal Feat Free
18 Normal Feat Free
-- Incantatrix Metamagic 1 Energy Subsitution Cold
-- Incantatrix Metamagic 4 Lord of the Uttercold
-- Incantatrix Metamagic 7 Free
-- Incantatrix Metamagic 10 Free

----------------------------------

Thus at level 12 you have all the feat and can cast 5th level spells. Recommended feats for the free spots are cold focus, and greater cold focus for another +2 to dcs.

Draconic Aura gives you +2 at this level, +3 at level 14.

Save DCs
10+5+2+2*Cha
at level 12 you can easily get Cha of 25(18 Start+3 level up+4 Cloak of Charisma)
Thus save dcs of 10+5+2+2*7=31 at level 12. Throw on a veil of allure and those dcs go up by 2 for enchantment spells.

At level 13 you grab the wonderful spell Freezing Glance. Will Save every round or be frozen which is a save or lose. Enchantment but not mind affecting. Can be chained (and thus every round they must make a new save)

Annoying, but with Quicken turning you don't really loose an action to turn so it's not a big deal. At round 2 everybody still gonna die :D

Would the "half your turning check in damage" part apply to ability damage, too? Like, say, Shivering Touch?

Rather than sacrificing a caster level to Cleric (the power of CO compels you!), you could go Sorcerer 6/Incantatrix 4/Sacred Exorcist 1/Incantatrix +6/Archmage 3.

EDIT: With Silverbrow human, Dragonblooded Sorcerer substitution and Able Learner you could even have UMD as well...

I don't think so. Similar feats like Point Blank Shot and Ranged Spell Specialization specifically state that they don't add to ability damage.

Won't work as you need to be able to spontaneously cast inflicts wounds, line of spells. Dragonblood would work especially with Incantatrix which solve the feat starving problem

Arcane Disciple, or the Complete Champion Sorcerer class substitution feature might be able to get you this... otherwise it could be problematic.

Sacret Exorcist gives you turn rather than rebuke, anyway. Even if it is worded to function 'like the cleric class feature', IIRC taking levels in it requires you to have good alignment.

For a sorcerer-like? I'd rather not, even for +Cha to DCs. Even with everything here it's too conditional.
