| #1nistraSep 21, 2010 9:48:26 | We're about to start a campaing in the underdark, so I decided to make a drow assassin, who'll become a dread fang of lolth. We're starting lvl 10. Do bear in mind that my DM wants a strong background and role-play. This is what I've thought so far: Lirax Phae`Al (Shadowblade) Rogue2/Drow Fighter2/Swashbuckler3/Assassin3 Alignment: Lawful Evil, Deity: Lolth, The Spider Queen STR 14, DEX 22, CON 14, INT 21, WIS 10, CHA 12 AC = 27 Protective Items: mithral breastplate +3, animated heavy steel shield, ring of protection +1 Weapon: Twin Weapons of legacy (homebrew, I'll not discuss them now) Feats: Daring Outlaw, Weapon finesse (SWB), Two weapong fighting, Improved Two weapon fighting, Ambidexterity, Weapon Focus, Improved critical Sneack attack 5d6, Death Attack DC 20 Posessions: Mithral Breastplate +3 Animated Heavy Steel Shield Amulet of Health +2 Headband of Intellect +2 Gloves of Dexterity +2 Bracers of Murder FTW :D Boots of speed I plan going Dread Fang of Lolth from 11 to 20, the class is nice. And we're starting in Menzoberranzan Books allowed: Core Complete Series Drow of the Underdark Underdark City of the Spider Queen Forgotten Realms setting and other books, but we must ask him for permission. So, can I make the hero stronger? And remember, he has to be an assassin 10x |
| #2lormadorSep 21, 2010 20:10:44 | Ambidexterity doesn't exist in 3.5. Check out Complete Scoundrel. It has some skill tricks you might want, like Spot the Weak Point, useful when you're coming in with a high-value attack like a Death Attack. It also has the Craven feat, right? Ask for Telling Blow from PHB II. If you drop Ambidexterity and Weapon Focus for Telling Blow and Craven, your damage output will get a lot higher. |
| #3nistraSep 22, 2010 12:22:33 | DM allowes Ambidexterity (he suggested it to me), so I guess I'll be taking it. Craven left me speechless.. -Weapon Focus +Craven I have no room for Telling Blow now, but I'll consider it as my next feat though I wanted to take Master of Poison. Also sold the armor and got Mithral Drowcraft Breastplate of Speed which gives me an additional attack, +1 to hit and dmg and +4 AC. Nice. Of course I sold the boots of speed and the Ring of Protection +1 that I had and I have a bit spare gold -6,000 gp. Any ideas what to buy? I was thinking of Ring of Resolve, but I'm not sure. It can also be a fluff item. |
| #4Maat_MonsSep 22, 2010 18:37:44 | Some Rogue Items: Bracers of the Hunter: These cost 8,500 gp and are from Secrets of Xen'drik, page 145. They improve your sneak attack damage by 1d6 and give you a +5 competence bonus on hide checks and a +2 competence bonus on initiative checks. Deadly Precision: This +1 weapon special ability is from Magic Item Compendium, page 32. Any sneak attack delivered with the weapon deals an extra 1d6 damage. (The Complete Adventurer version is +2 and deals an extra 2d6 damage.) Deathstrike Bracers: These cost 5,000 gp and are from Magic Item Compendium, page 93. They allow you to deal sneak attacks and critical hits to creatures normally immune for 3 rounds per day. (Thanks Thywolf.) Demolition Crystal, Greater: This costs 6,000 gp and is from Magic Item Compendium, page 65. A +3 or better weapon with this crystal attached can deal sneak attacks and critical hits to constructs, overcomes the DR of constructs as though made of adamantine, and deals an extra 1d6 damage to constructs. Feycraft: This weapon template adds 1,500 gp to the cost of the weapon and is from Dungeon Master's Guide II, page 275. If applied to a light weapon, anyone who wields the weapon can use dexterity instead of strength on the attack roll, as if he had the weapon finesse feat. Gloves of the Balanced Hand: These cost 8,000 gp and are from Magic Item Compendium, page 105. They give you the two-weapon fighting feat if you do not already have it. If you already have the two-weapon fighting feat, they instead give you the improved two-weapon fighting feat. Mantle of the Predator: This costs 8,000 gp and is from Magic Item Compendium, page 200. It causes you to deal an extra 1d6 damage when you attack a foe denied his dexterity bonus to AC and gives you a +5 competence bonus on hide and move silently. Rogue's Vest: This costs 18,000 gp and is from Magic Item Compendium, page 130. It improves your sneak attack damage by 1d6. Truedeath Crystal, Greater: This costs 10,000 gp and is from Magic Item Compendium, page 66. A +3 or better weapon with this crystal attached can deal sneak attacks and critical hits to undead, functions as a ghost touch weapon, and deals an extra 1d6 damage to undead. |
| #5nistraSep 23, 2010 8:14:20 | I like the Mantle of the Predator but I don't have the funds for it. I will stick with the Bracers of Murder for now, the are kinda fluff item. Also, my two weapons are homebrew weapons of legacy and I cannot enchant them further (though he ma allow me to use crystals which would be awesome) |
| #6nistraSep 27, 2010 6:01:08 | So, first session went pretty well, character deals a sh*t load of damage. But, we had and early casualty and I nearly died. Good thing trolls are stupid creatures :D. Basically, the campaign seems to be very hard, so I wanted to have a back up character (just in case). I always wanted to make a twf sword and shield guy but I don't have an idea from where to start. Has anyone thought of something like that? Katana guy with lots and lots and lots of attacks and damage is a nice choice too. C'mon, bring the inner power play that rests in you ![]() Remember, they have to be drow. |
| #7spiral_rider_hSep 27, 2010 8:49:45 | I'm guessing since you didn't count any level adjustment for drow in your first post that you get to be a drow for free? |
| #8lormadorSep 27, 2010 10:16:04 | Where is my head at? You need Tome of Battle! Swordsage will get you more Sneak Attack damage when you're about 9th level- there's a stance for it. Plus, the Shadow Blade feat is in Tome of Battle. So is the Dancing Mongoose maneuver. Might consider a level of Lion Spirit Totem for ye olde Pounce. |
| #9nistraSep 27, 2010 15:31:23 | Ye olde pounce... tried several times, different DM's, no one would allow it ![]() Tome is not allowed. Now I have 5 attacks, when the opponent is flat - footed I deal 1d8 + 28 + 5d6 SA dmg. I don't feel like playing a Dervish - we have one in the party already. I need something really extreme, unique ![]() About the drow. We don't get lvl adjustment for leveling purposes. We are all lvl 10 now, but for the purpose of our CR he adds 2 (party lvl 10 for 12). Off topic question - where can I read about the "Paladin of slaugher" class? |
| #10Maat_MonsSep 27, 2010 16:44:50 | Off topic question - where can I read about the "Paladin of slaugher" class? Here or Unearthed Arcana. |
| #11spiral_rider_hSep 27, 2010 19:09:53 | Yet another "No Tome of Battle" ruling. Is there something I'm missing as to why that book is ruled out so often? Another option for you would be a light mace specialist, using Lightning Mace and Crushing Strike to great effect. I came up with Fighter 6/Tempest 4/Fighter +6/Swashbuckler 3/Tempest +1. Since you're a drow, maybe you could talk the DM into allowing a Flaw so you can get a second feat at first level. The full build is posted here: community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758... |
| #12lormadorSep 27, 2010 20:51:51 | I really don't get why Tome of Battle is banned so much. There are only a few things in it that could use adjustment in most games- the Crusader's infinite level 1 out of combat healing, Iron Heart Surge (my group gives it a check of initiator level vs. caster level, like Dispel Magic and uncapped), and the 1d2 Crusader. It still doesn't make melee as strong as a caster. What, do people think it's ok that the druid's 1st level Animal Companion is roughly equal to a 1st level fighter? |
