Our party recently wiped and we somehow convinced the DM to allow us to start a 16th level campaign with 10,000XP to set-up contingency/persistent spells and for LA buy off. I'm thinking of possibly making a druid or a wizard and I was wondering if there were any good LA+1 races out there that would fit. I've always dismissed LA for casters because of the spell casting loss. Any help would be appreciated.

Voldonai, Unapproachable East. Plant Traits, and half damage from piercing for LA +2, favored class druid.

You can't do dragon wrought and feral because feral can only be applied to humanoids/monstrous-humanoids and dragon wrought turns your type in to a dragon. I might just do feral though, but without dragon wrought you take the venerable penalties right?

Hmm.. indeed.. But you could argue you were born Feral (0-Level), with the Dragon-Wrought occuring as you were being born (1st-Level as stated in the book) after being conceived as Feral.. Lol ignore that - it's just conjecture.

And yes, unfortunately you do get the negatives if you aren't Dragon-Wrought

Human could be a good Feral Druid and if you are going to wildshaped most of the time the negatives (except the hit to con/HP's) won't matter too much.

Well I talked to the DM, I might just save it for persistent/contingency or not use it at all since I can't seem to find a +Wis LA or template that's worthwhile.

A tiefling Wizard might be nice. Int bonus, but outsider type is the biggest sell point.

Voldonoi also has a +2 to wisdom. I wish people would examine things when I suggest them... Sorry if I'm tetchy.
I know it's a +2 LA, but your 10k exp will still cover the buy-off.

Anthropomorphic Bat gives +6 wis... But has 1 racial HD. Not quite what you were looking for, unfortunately, but still nice.

EDIT: Saint Lesser Aasimar +2 Con, +4 Wis, +6 Cha (+2 LA). 2 LA, however, costs 13,000 xp, somewhat greater than your 10,000.

Lesser Aasimar is still good, though.

Yeah it's awesome but unfortunately he only gave us enough XP for buy off 1 LA and I don't really want to lose a caster level.

You don't lose a caster level, not for more than a meet-up.

Anthropomorphic animals with 1 HD have that hit die replaced by their first class level.

Would LA 2 be 16,000xp? (you'd be ECL 8 when you could do the first buyoff for 7,000xp, and then ECL 10 (3 levels later) would be another 9,000xp)

ECL 6 and 9, actually.

Also, there are very compelling arguments for keeping the racial hit dice on anthropomorphic animals. Chiefly, the rule about losing your racial hit dice if you take a class level and have only one hit dice was the norm for ALL types of hit dice in 3.0, not the exception. Savage Species was reminding you of that. 3.5 rules (only lose hit dice on humanoid or monstrous humanoid) tend to supercede 3.0 ones.

EDIT: Also, Thought bottle. Put xp in Thought Bottle, pay off LA, take xp from Thought Bottle, Ta Da! No more LA, and same ECL!

How do you figure ECL 6 and 9? According to http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/races/reducingLevelAdjustments.htm, A starting LA of 2 requires 6 and 9 class levels, not ECL 6 and 9. (Look at the table)

Once the total of a character's class levels (not including any Hit Dice from his creature type or his level adjustment) reaches three times his level adjustment, his level adjustment is eligible to be decreased by 1.

Which sounds to me like ECL 8 (2 LA + 2*3 class levels) and then you need to gain another (LA*3) Class levels (since you reduced it from 2 to 1, and dropped your ECL from 8 to 7) that would be ECL 10. At each point you pay 1000*(ECL - 1) xp

Each time a character's level adjustment is eligible to be reduced, the character may pay an XP cost to take advantage of the reduction. The character must pay an amount of XP equal to (his current ECL -1)

You are right, I've always assumed it was Class levels + LA, not just class levels. Huh.

I am still amused at the idea of a Powerful Build-focused Druid Wildshaper, using the Goliath race. Throw in some abuse fom Frostburn, and you might have some rather disgusting attacks and grapples.

Powerful Build doesn't effect natural weapons.

I was thinking something more along the lines of a Giant Octopus. ^_^ I mean, it -does- have a land speed. Heck, even a Dire Croc would be fun at the level you get access to it.

Reminder:
Thought Bottles are also colloquially knows as Getting-Punched-In-The-Throat-By-Your-GM Bottles, but if you can get away with using them, they are a quick trip to winsville.
