| #1metagonJan 23, 2009 12:53:56 | So I've been spending some time building a charging monk build, and was looking for some extra input. The below is the list of classes and the feat progression. Ftr = Fighter, PW = Psychic Warrior, Mnk = Monk, DM = Drunken Master, FoZ = Fist of Zuoken AKA Psionic Fist. 1. Ftr Battle Jump (bonus), Expeditious Dodge (level 1), Powerful Charge (human) 2. PW Power Attack (bonus) 3. PW Up the Walls (bonus), Great Fortitude 4. Mnk Improved Unarmed Strike (bonus), Stunning Fist (bonus) 5. Mnk Fiery Fist (bonus) 6. Mnk Improved Natural Attack 7. Ftr Greater Powerful Charge (bonus) 8. DM 9. DM Wild Talent 10. DM 11. FoZ 12. FoZ Flying Kick 13. FoZ 14. FoZ 15. FoZ Acrobatic Strike, bonus psionic feat 16. FoZ 17. FoZ 18. FoZ feat 19. FoZ 20. FoZ Expanded Knowledge (Metamorphosis) (bonus), feat Powers will include: Level 1: Expansion, Metaphysical Weapon?, Adrenaline Boost?, Inertial Armor? 2: Hustle, Psionic Lion's Charge 3: Evade Burst, Danger Sense 4: Freedom of Movement, another power 5: Psychofeedback, another power Items: +1 Valorous Impact Necklace of Natural Weapons Monk's Belt Sandals of the Light Step AC-boosting items, which will vary based on the level I start at due to wealth... The unusual order of putting Fighter in at level 7 is to qualify for the +4 BAB of the Greater Powerful Charge feat for the second fighter bonus feat, but since play will begin at about level 10-12, the general order of the levels before that don't really matter much. I take Drunken Master out to at least third level because of Swaying Waist, which is to help get a little more AC on the build. The second level is great for stagger, though, which is something I don't want to lose. In an alternative version of the build, I take the fourth level of Drunken Master for flavor's sake, and the fifth level for the damage increase, but I know this won't match the damage from the lost levels of Fist of Zuoken. Here are a few assumptions that we have more or less house-ruled: 1. The Drunken Master CAN exploit circular charges. 2. The improvised weapon is ONLY a damage boost on unarmed strikes and doesn't count as wielding a different weapon. Therefore, a drunken master using an improvised weapon still counts as unarmed. This allows for Flying Kick, Fiery Fist (and stunning attacks), as well as effects that come from the Necklace of Natural Attacks. Also, there is no penalty for nonproficiency because the monk is still using unarmed strikes. 3. Monk's Belt does not stack with the Superior Unarmed Strike feat. The idea is that similarly worded effects do not stack.4. Since we are not playing in Eberron, regional prerequisites don't matter that much. Basically the tactic of the build is to exploit Up the Walls and Battle Jump together; Battle Jump doesn't state that you must jump from a flat surface, so the idea is to climb a wall and jump off onto opponents. I haven't seen this combo before but someone can tell me if I'm wrong about that. With the Valorous Weapon enhancement this gives triple weapon damage (Valorous doubles weapon damage on a charge, battle jump further doubles damage, resulting in x3). When there is no wall nearby, staggering allows charging in circles every round. We have never reached 20th level in a campaign, so the last few levels I haven't really planned out since it is unlikely we will play out that far. For Expanded Knowledge, Metamorphosis is a possibility, but another fun one would be Wall of Ectoplasm. Summoning walls anywhere I want for the Up the Walls/Battle Jump combo would be great. I'm a little worried about the AC of this build, actually. Is this unfounded? From what I can tell, at level 12, AC will be 10 + Dex bonus + Wis bonus + 1 (from monk levels and Monk's Belt) + 2 (Expeditious Dodge) + 2 (Swaying Waist) + 1 (Drunken Master AC bonus) + whatever I can afford from items, so that's 16 + Dex + Wis + AC-boosting items. I haven't really paid too much attention to AC before but this is the main thing I've been concerned with. Power points also appear to be really low for a lot of the build, which is unfortunate. Any recommendations on powers would be appreciated, I'm a little less familiar with psionics, so I just picked some that seemed good. I don't have access to Hyperconscious, though, if that makes a difference. I personally don't really like the idea of expending psionic focus, though, so you can see I don't have the Psionic Fist feat or anything. Any input would be helpful! |

Plus with Flying Kick, you get a Liu Kang bicycle kick visual, that does a craptonne of damage, or if you prefer, Ryu's flying spinning kick. Also, you plan on charging at people from above, and didn't consider the Dungeoncrasher Fighter levels from Dungeonscape? Fist of Zuoken is a bad choice, you're better of taking the Warmind PrC and taking Monastic Training and Tashalatora (Warmind). It's Full BAB, and gets a lot of PP for the levels. Greater/ Powerful Charge feats won't do much for pouncers, as they only apply to one of the attacks. So I'd suggest dropping those. Room for better feats is nice. I'll be back later with a build. Something has come up. |
| #3metagonJan 23, 2009 14:19:34 | A barbarian/monk build would be really hard to swing by my DM, otherwise it would indeed be great. Psionic Lion's Charge gives pounce, though. |
| #4sargsargJan 23, 2009 14:32:53 | A barbarian/monk build would be really hard to swing by my DM, otherwise it would indeed be great. Psionic Lion's Charge gives pounce, though. As you've already taken Power Attack and Great Fortitude you could consider taking Fist of the Forest (CC) for the AC bonus, increased dmg, rage, and that would probably also help you convince your DM about the barbarian thing. |

| #7carnivoreJan 23, 2009 15:34:06 | you dont even need Barbarian for Pounce, .... just do this: take the feat: Lion Tribe Warrior(Shinning South) get Full Attack with Light weapon on charge.... and Unarmed Strikes are Light weapons;) :D |
| #8metagonJan 24, 2009 15:08:59 | We don't get access to Dragon and Dungeon Magazine stuff, sorry I forgot to mention that. Also, no flaws. Lion Tribe Warrior will probably be the best option, I actually didn't know about that feat. The thing about dungeoncrasher is I'm not sure how good bull-rushing bonuses are going to be on a human monk. Hmmm, Fist of the Forest is a viable option if not just for damage, AC, speed boosts, and uncanny dodge. A drunken homeless guy is also not a bad character idea, haha. Skill point requirements look like they're going to be tight just trying to get Knowledge (psionics) up to 8 for Warmind. Getting all the skills to have enough ranks would be difficult for Drunken Master, Fist of the Forest, and Warmind. As far as I can tell, the best way to get the skill points for Fist of the Forest is with a dip into Ranger, since none of my current classes give Survival. The below build should be able to give me enough skill points for prestige class prereqs, assuming, my Int is at least 14. Rng = Ranger, FotF = Fist of the Forest, Wrm = Warmind 1. Rng (Track), Great Fortitude, Lion Tribe Warrior (UA variant: wild shape/fast movement) 2. Mnk (IUS), (Power Attack) (UA variant: Overwhelming Attack) 3. Mnk (Monastic Training (Warmind)), Expeditious Dodge 4. FotF 5. FotF 6. FotF Improved Natural Attack 7. Ftr (Battle Jump) (Cityscape variant: Ride for Tumble) 8. DM 9. DM Flying Kick 10. PW (Up the Walls) 11. PW (Speed of Thought) 12. Wrm Tashalatora (Warmind) 13. Wrm 14. Wrm 15. Wrm Acrobatic Strike 16. Wrm 17. Wrm 18. Wrm ??? 19. Wrm 20. Wrm ??? Alternatively, I can go for the Wilderness Rogue variant with the Feat rogue variant together from Unearthed Arcana, maybe. 1. Rog (Power Attack), Great Fortitude, Lion Tribe Warrior 2. Mnk [IUS], [Monastic Training (Warmind)] 3. FotF Expeditious Dodge 4. FotF 5. FotF 6. Rog (Battle Jump), Improved Natural Attack 7. DM 8. DM 9. PW (Up the Walls), Flying Kick 10. PW (Speed of Thought) 11. Wrm 12. Wrm Tashalatora (Warmind) 13. Wrm 14. Wrm 15. Wrm Acrobatic Strike etc. |
| #9sargsargJan 25, 2009 9:02:58 | You need BAB +4 to enter Fist of the Forest though, so you can't take it that early. |
| #10metagonJan 25, 2009 14:36:28 | Hmmm, you're right. So it would look something like this: 1. Rng (Track), Great Fortitude, Lion Tribe Warrior 2. Mnk [IUS], [Power Attack] 3. Mnk [Monastic Training (Warmind)], Expeditious Dodge 4. PW (Up the Walls) 5. PW (Speed of Thought) 6. Ftr (Battle Jump), Improved Natural Attack 7. FotF 8. FotF 9. FotF Flying Kick 10. DM 11. DM 12. Wrm Tashalatora (Warmind) etc. |
| #11metagonJan 26, 2009 12:57:04 | So I just found the prestige class "Thief-Acrobat" and it looks like it has a lot of good stuff, especially acrobatic charge and movement mastery which would be great on a charger. Is there anyway to imitate this with items? I'm unsure if Sandals of the Light Step (Magic Item Compendium pg198) give acrobatic charge due to the difference in wording, but it seems that both let you charge through difficult terrain. I'm not sure if the acrobatic charge class ability lets me do more or less than the sandals. But movement mastery is pretty awesome. Exemplar looks like another way to imitate movement mastery if I simply choose Balance, Climb, Jump, and Tumble for Skill Mastery (provided Int is high enough), but Exemplar requires Skill Focus which is yet another feat, but this "movement mastery" would only require one level rather than four levels like in Thief-Acrobat. Hmmm. If I can imitate acrobatic charge, then one level in Exemplar would be better than four levels in Thief-Acrobat. Assuming partial BAB to get over +4 BAB sooner (I haven't asked my DM about this yet, but he might go for it), I can do the following. Able Learner is now included so I am unrestricted with buying skill ranks, making prestige class qualifications much easier. TA = Thief-Acrobat 1. Mnk [IUS], [Power Attack], Lion Tribe Warrior, Able Learner 2. Mnk [Monastic Training (Warmind)] 3. PW (Expeditious Dodge), Great Fortitude 4. PW (Up the Walls) 5. Ftr (Battle Jump) 6. FotF Improved Natural Attack 7. FotF 8. FotF 9. DM Flying Kick 10. DM 11. TA 12. TA Acrobatic Strike 13. TA 14. TA 15. Wrm Tashalatora (Warmind) 16. Wrm 17. Wrm 18. Wrm feat 19. Wrm 20. Wrm feat Unfortunately I lose a fair amount of psionics by putting in thief acrobat. |
| #12runedkJan 26, 2009 16:16:10 | Fist of the forrest combines nicely with deepwarden, if you can be a dorf instead of a human, and if you can find room for the Endurance feat. 2xCon to AC, yes please. //Rune |
| #13metagonJan 31, 2009 10:11:18 | I don't think I'm fitting in all that I'm fitting in without Able Learner, but thanks for the idea. I'm taking out Thief-Acrobat because its abilities are a little subpar with how late I'd have to push them. I can get most of the abilities through items... Skill Mastery I can get from Belt of Ultimate Athleticism, and for only sacrificing a swift action every now and then is much better than spending four levels in thief-acrobat, lol. Acrobatic Charge's wording is hard to read, but I think it just means you take no penalties from difficult terrain, so that's mimicked by Sandals of the Light Step. Fast Acrobatics and Steady Stance are not really necessary, but they'd be handy, but I don't know of any items that grant effects like either of those. Boots of the Battle Charger gives me Powerful Charge; if only there were an item that gave GPC. I wonder if I can combine items somehow. So it looks something like this: 1. Mnk [IUS], [Power Attack], Lion Tribe Warrior, Able Learner 2. Mnk [Monastic Training (Warmind)] 3. PW (Expeditious Dodge), Great Fortitude 4. Ftr (Battle Jump) 5. PW (Up the Walls) 6. FoF Improved Natural Attack 7. DM 8. DM 9. Ftr (Acrobatic Strike), Flying Kick 10. FoF 11. FoF 12. Wrm Tashalatora (Warmind) 13. Wrm 14. Wrm 15. Wrm Snap Kick 16. Wrm 17. Wrm 18. Wrm Leap of the Heavens 19. Wrm 20. Wrm Practiced Manifester (Warmind) Oh how I wish I could fit in Expanded Knowledge Metamorphosis and Wall of Ectoplasm, but I don't even get 5th level powers until epic. Arguably it's a stronger psionic build if I drop some of the unnecessary stuff like Drunken Master, but what the hey, this has me pretty satisfied. |
