Dwarven armor?

Is it the elves that make the good weapons and armor? What about dwarves?

Would it be considered an insult for a dwarf to wear elven chain armor?

I'd say its a sin if ANYONE wears Elven (Mithral) Chainmail.  I assume we're talking 3.5 here.  I'm sorry but for the minimal price difference you use breast plate for your mithral armor; you use mithral to reduce penalties so spend the few extra gp to reduce the penalties even more.

If I want to think of 2ed's "Elven Chainmail" in 3e I think "Mithral Chain SHIRT" instead of "Mithral Chainmail".  I then tend to thing of "Elven Plate" as being Mitral Breastplate although I'll note that I do NOT change proficiency requirements with Mithral armors.

Yes StevenO we're talking 3.5 here

I meant would it be a sin to dwarves in general not the elves. Say a dwarf (and a few others but just the 1 dwarf) saved the lives of thousands of elves by helping to hold off an army of orcs while hundreds more elves escaped.  Then the dwarf and company were givin the high honor of recieving a suit of elven chainmail for doing it.

It wouldn't be a sin, but when that dwarf goes home to his clan, he may face some ridicule if he was wearing such a "dainty piece of armor," and not something "of stout dwarven craftsmanship."

This depends 100% on your campaign setting. So basically, ask your DM.

It's mithral mail. He'd just wear it UNDER his stout peice of dwarven craftsmanship.

D&D is not Tolkien, elves don't make the best stuff in the game. In 1E, only elves could make elven mail, so receiving a suit that would fit you was a great armor, because it would indeed have to be made especially for you. IN 2e, they let dwarves make elven mail (or at least Bruenor could for Drizzt, and I'm assuming an 8th level dwarf wasn't the best smith in the Realms). In 3E and 3.5, it's just mail made out of mithral, and ANYONE can make a suit of it.

i.e. you'll have to change the base rules of 3.5 for it to be a unique and special thing again.

Midgard Dwarf race

Major Bloodline (I prefer Titan for this sort of thing)

Ironsoul Forgemaster PrC

Battlesmith PrC

Uncanny Trickster PrC

Legacy Champion PrC

... some combo of all this would get

you some Epic Armor + Arms for cheap.

Wouldn't really do anything else.

He speaks his own dialect of optimization. It is always sound advice even if it requires a few ranks in Decipher Script to interpret. Here that reflects a great dwarf weaponsmith (and maker of all things, really), able to do Epic gear pre-epic due to a few fun quirks in the rules when you apply legacy trickster advancement and bloodline skill rank acceleration. I'll post more when I'm not on a phone in an airport.

My kitty avatar's subconscious was disappointed with something.

The only other thing Dwarves have themselves, and not others, are very small things that don't do anything.  The Iron Mind PrC is dwarven oriented, and centers around Heavy Armor use, but any other race combo could take that.  Divine Mind of Moradin is possible (but not practical) ... and again could be done other ways.  Something like Divine Mind 8 / Ironsoul Forgemaster 2 / Iron Mind 10 would be as "dwarf" specific as you could get, and pointing directly at Armor.  This isn't exactly Orc Slaying Powah!  Even further out, would be to use the Chosen Of Moradin epic destiny from 4e, squeezed in at levels 12 15 18 and 20.  That would be adding 1 converted power where the big boys play with Wishes.

Dang.  Not much dwarf armor action at all.  Fluff and game history be damned.
