Dwarven Axe Thrower Build

I am looking to create a lvl 8 dwarven axe thrower.

What type of axe doesn't matter too much. My vision was a throwing axe thrower with a large warhammer as a melee weapon (since there are no core rules for a maul I was thinking of seeing if my DM will just let me use a large warhammer as a two handed weapon).

The goal is to create a frankan-like soldier who would throw an axe into battle and then follow it to it's target to finish the target off.

The abilities will be the elite array.

I wasn't sure when it came to which class would be best. Options would help me decide if I want to be the tank or just range/melee support. A high damage rogue or a fighter would be nice but don't feel limited to those two classes. Multi-classing is not out of the question but try to keep it to just two (I think the fighter/rogue/prestigue/uberprestigue class by level whatever is a bit tedious) I don't want to stay at a distance all the time and would love to be able to dish out some severe punishment. I was thinking spell-storing throwing axes that would release fireballs and a bunch of other spells. My vision for that was a Green Arrow esq bag of tricks for a variety of situations.

High damage output and high versatility are important. Although RPing doesn't matter much I figured he would be quite uncouth (using charisma as a big dump) and not particularly subtle. I am more concerned with what he can dish out as opposed to take.

I want the build to be core classes with very limited splash books. The only splash books I own are complete arcane and I have access to complete warrior so those two would be the best to use if any.

I searched this forum and came up pretty dry. I have played since high school but haven't had regular sessions in a year and a half so I am a bit rusty on making viable characters (my last toon was a sun elf assassin or something like that). I look forward to all the options that I am sure you all can come up with.

Well you could start out by maybe giving us a rough build of your own that we can critique. Or just make a Warblade 5/Master Thrower 5/Bloodstorm Blade 10.

I am looking for a lvl 8 character... using almost all core books... that means even though your enthusiasm for the lvl 20 is appreciated it isn't what I'm looking for. I came here because I didn't even know where to start. I could go the fighter route and have some feats to play with. I probably don't want to rogue b/c the melee potential isn't there. I know a lot of you folks enjoy putting builds together and I thought perhaps someone would like to build a toon or two that is good at throwing and chasing axes into melee.

I don't think ranger multi-classing would be good b/c the archery tree doesn't help soon enough for what I am looking for. I could go human fighter and use the extra feat to beef up the initial attack of a flying axe toward the head but I like the flavor of a dwarf better.

I realize I am asking for help from little more than an idea and an ability set but I would appreciate any hands anyone could lend my way.

There is an actual Maul in the back of Complete Warrior, so you have that.

As for throwing you're going to want feats like Point Blank Shot, Precise shot and what not. Despite saying 'shot' they work just as well with thrown weapons. Ranged disarm and ranged pin may also be flavorful and useful, and are found in Complete Warrior. Also, since you have Complete warrior, you may want to look into the Master Thrower prestige class, which does exactly what the title implies. And it has full BaB to boot. As a straight fighter you would be able to take it at 6th level, due to skill requirements.

Thank you much, the complete warrior is a friend's so I wasn't sure what was in it from memory. I wondered about all those "shot" feats b/c really I just want to send in one or two decent blows before swinging a massive hammer around.

Optimizers could give me a hand crunching the numbers to see if feats that grant more range would be good. If the -4 on a bigger axe is worth it for the damage or is the damage of the weapon irrelevant when you throw it i.e. would Throw Anything even be worth the feat? Since I don't have complete warrior in front of me which tricks would work best since I'm really just throwing and chasing? What spells would be best for a belt of throwing axes (best being in versitility i.e. fire-spell cold-spell aoe spell etc)? Should I concentrate on damage output from the initial axe or on the hammer in hand? I just don't know how to proceed at all.

So from the sound of it you do not want a thrower, you want a melee character who can throw a couple axes before charging in. You can find plenty of melee builds around here and then just carry some expensive axes with spell storing or whatever you want to use to generate your throwing damage.

You will not do good damage as a thrower without dedicating a ridiculous number of feats and gold to that goal. Just go the usual melee route, power attack, weapon focus then going into leap attack, shock trooper etc or whatever you wanted. If you decide you do want to focus more on the throwing your main three feats to score would be Point blank shot (prereq for most), Rapid Shot and Precise Shot.

Archery/Throwing is almost entirely feat based, so fighters make good archers as a base, then go into another class or prestige class.

if you want to dedicate your pc to throwing, scout 5/ warblade 2/ bloodstorm blade 1

this allows your to take improved skirmish. if you wield a waraxe you're lookin at 1d10+4d6+str+enhancement as long as you move 20ft. this makes for powerful one hits but not so optimized on the full attack. you also have few manuevers to play w/. good skills and hp.

if ToB is out, try scout 5/ fighter 2/ master thrower 1

same on damage but no manuvers. medium skills and hp.

but. since you don't have access to Tome of Battle (or Complete Adventurer, for the scout), I'm going to go out on a limb here and just suggest:

Fighter 8, then pick your poison.

Rough level breakdown:
1st: power attack, weapon focus (some kind of axe)
2nd: throw anything
3rd: leap attack
4th: weapon specialization
6th: improved sunder, combat brute (or improved bull rush and shock trooper)
8th: improved weapon focus (some kind of axe)

thats a more melee focused build ... but since you won't be throwing much, and you're likely to be in front, you should be okay without precise shot. I would pick up a +1 returning [some kind of axe]. see if your DM will let you get returning on it since you have throw anything. carry another +1 [some kind of axe] for melee.

The reason I would focus on axes is so that you can pick up the weapon focus/specialization feats ... they're not that great, by any stretch, but + to attack and damage never hurt anyone, either, and power attack is plenty of cheese for the most part.

If you go dwarf, use a dwarven waraxe; otherwise i'd say battle axe (or if you feel like something really funky, greataxe :P)

hope that helps.

Jandor1's post +1.

Also, if you're playing a dwarf check out Races of Stone for the Dwarf Fighter Substitution Levels. At 1st-level it gives you d12 hit dice and Weapon Focus in a number of axes in exchange for one feat.

If you want to reduce MAD and have your character depend entirely on Strength, Brutal Throw and Power Throw are the way to go. One of the Master Thrower abilities allows you to make thrown weapon attacks as touch attack, which combined with Power Throw results in a lot of death.

Backstory: Sydney Stoneblade was born on the island of Akathi in a mining city named Krone. Like his father before him and his father before him, Sydney was gifted with Stoneblade, the family's namesake. Also like his forefathers, Syd has left his island home in order to earn the right to carve his glyph into the head of the family heirloom. Sydney is rash and uncouth. He is driven to greatness for the sake of his family and strives to follow in the footsteps of his fore bearers. His red hair marked him for a more barbarous route than most Krone dwarves travel. While still young he was trained up in the ways of voracious, wild battle. Disenchanted with the mindlessness of the barbarian road, Syd developed greater respect for laws and tactics. Now, as he grows closer to his ambiguous goal, Syd has come across a band of travels, each seeking their own means.

I'd go with Ranger 6 / Master Thrower 2

Once you get what you want out of Master Thrower, I'd then start going for barbarian and/or fighter.

The trick is, go for the two weapon fighting tree with your Ranger, not the Archery tree. You can use two weapon fighting with thrown weapons, so that could make a flurry of axes thrown. And then when you get in melee range, you don't have any "wasted" feats.

Alignment: LG (changed after becoming fighter)
...
Illiteracy
Rage 1/day
...
+1 Thundering Dwarven Waraxe [2,330gp] (is this price correct or is it one 4,000 gp more?)
Spell Storing Handaxe [2,310gp]
+1 Breastplate [1220 gp]

Note that as soon as you multiclass to any non barbarian clas you become literarate for free.
Also, as soon as you become lawful you can no longer rage or ever again gain levels in Barbarian. May I suggest Neutral good to represent his more Lawful leanings from his original Chaotic?

A +1 Breastpalte is 1,500 gold. (1000 for the +1 enchantment, 500 for the Mastercrafted Breastplate, note that enchanting armor is far less costly than enchanting weapons)
A +1 Thundering Dwarven Waraxe is 8,330 gold pieces (8,000 for the 2 +'s of effects, 330 for the mastercrafted waraxe).
A Spell Storing Handaxe would also be 8,308 gold. ALL magic weapons must be Mastercrafted and then enchanted to +1 before anything else can be added to them. Spell storing is a +1 additional effect. So it would be 8,000 gold for the 2 +'s of effects & 308 gold for the Mastercrafted Throwing Axe.

I would suggest a +1 Returning Hand Axe instead of the Spell Storing axe at this level though. Both costs are the same.

Look into Point Blank Shot and Far Shot as well. When you use a thrown weapon, its range increment is doubled, and you can throw into a melee with your friends and not take a negative.

Dump the potions of Barkskin. You will need the money for your other gear and the bonus they give is not good enough for the cost at this level. For 1,320 gold you could get a +1 Large Shield and have the +3 Armor Class the potions give temporarily, all the time.

Since your using a dwarven waraxe as a dwarf and not doing two weapon fighting you have the hand free for it.

And honestly if your going to spend 2 +'s on the dwarven axe make it a +1 Screaming weapon, not Thundering. Thundering only adds D8 sonic damage on a crit (one swing out of 20). Screaming Adds D6 Sonic damage on every hit and costs the same and thematically screaming is pretty much the same as thundering.

With only 27,000 gold to play with you have some hard decisions.
