I don't have that book just yet, but I'll get it sometime.
The Eberron Adept is straightforward, just add one domain to spells known; that's it.
The Magewright is confusing to me.
There's this shorty write up ---> http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ebds/20040823a
Does it do anything?
Does it do anything at all?

It looks to me like you just get access to 5th level Arcanes, and nothing else.
What can this very very little puppy do ??

It's an NPC class, it's supposed to suck.

Well this is the CO board, I'm sure we can do something....hm, maybe utilizing the spell list shenanigans, we can figure out a way to use the Spell Mastery aspect as a bonus feat?

I dunno, the class looks absolutely pathetic...but I'm sure there MUST be some use for it...

Let's describe it's characteristics ...
- Low BAB
- d4 hit die
- Good wills ave
- INT based caster
- Prepared caster ... but doesn't use a spell book ... instead gets (basically) 6 instances of the Spell Mastery feat to add spells to his known list.
- All knowledges, concentration, spellcraft, handle animal (only 2+int points though)
- Gets cantrips
Most spells are utility ... movement, doors, find/hide objects/locations, marking
- Spell level 1: none I can see that are a lower than usual level, but does get some nifty things like grease ... but mostly utilities (hold portal, unseen servant, etc.)
- Spell level 2: augury as an arcane spell ... that's kinda neat ...
- Spell level 3: dispel magic and a full caster, for what that is worth
- Spell level 4: divination as an arcane spell ... again kinda neat ... remove curse ... and imbue with spell ability as an arcane spell. Oh and animate dead.
- Spell level 5: permanency, various symbols

The spell list isn't HORRIBLE ... a few nifty gems on there. Plenty of them aren't that limiting either.

Really, a high-level magewright would make a wicked funny NPC villain. All the scrying / non-detection coupled with animate dead, symbols, permanency ... be funny.`

hmm ...

PHB2 class feature retraining, would let the Spell Mastery to be re-picked, basically every level.
So, make items of as many spells on the list as possible, and move on to more spells.

So, Scribe Scroll and a friendly wizard, and you have the trick that was nerfed for artificers? Well done, sir.

They are not spontaneous casters and can't use a spellbook. No Spellmastery means they can't mem spells at all.

They make good crafters and I use them quite freq as house members. Interesting thought though, if you wanna move a repeat npc into a credible threat look @ tainted caster. Sharn has some hints on using them as support casters. Readied dispels can really slow your pcs down.

Lemme clarify,
Spellmastery can be retrained, into Spellmastery.
Basically, you re-pick the spells you want via spellmastery.
You made an Item of Spell X, during the previous level.

So, that's pretty much it ??

I dunno, the class as written says that it gains Spell Mastery with an alternate text (since it gains more than one spell from it) so I don't know if it's the actual feat.

Please don't post if you haven't even read the feat or class feature description. I urge any roaming mods to remove this post and the one I quote.

Cycada - here's the link to retraining. It's fairly straightforward.
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20060501a&page=6

Whether it's a feat, or just a class feature almost exactly like the feat, is irrelevant.

**

Pumping Int high enough, makes this irrelevant too.
It'll get all spells on it's list at some point, if optimized that way.

So, just (only) get more spells known via the standard tricks.

Sure. Expand your spell list.

Funny, he could get a Spellwurm, Spell Mastery the spells on there then lose the graft. Hmm.

CG , hey.
I was checking out that thread of yours over at bg.
And my weenie system filter keeps knocking down the sblocks. Weird.
Sucks I can't access it.

Did you have a thread of that stuff over here??

And then I took my own advice (surreal's index) ...

Now, where to find the time ...

Older copies are here. I can update the one I have here (the latest was called "Ways to Expand a Spell List, resurrected"

I should probably update this one too, change all the spoilers to sblock, etc.

One thing first, I don't appreciate receiving (what I believe to be) an attack. I'm familiar with only the magewright class itself, not with retraining, so I only assumed that you could only retrain feats and skills since that's all my DM allows.

Next time, atleast try to phrase your observation a bit better. But Awaken, thanks for the link.

As for the retraining bit, I see what you mean now. I can't believe we just turned a sub-par class into one that is actually viable.

Are there any advantages to this class, as opposed to a normal NPC mage? Besides not needing a spellbook that is?

And CG's thread:
http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1005250

Advantages? Nope.
Any town that has an Adept, would benefit more to have a Magewright, instead of a second Adept.
This of course, is splitting hairs. Short silly barely necessary hairs.

I suppose getting the very short list of divine spells onto an arcane caster, could be useful; for some other caster.

By the way, I updated the one here w/ the content from the other.
