ECL 10: Looking for a muse

Hello again, CO board. I may be getting back into D&D again (no guarantees) and I'm working on a character at ECL 10. I've got a build and functional character background, but I've got time before this campaign starts to think of other options.

Request: To be brief, the request is simple. I'm lookin' for a muse. A build idea with a cool concept. Something that could work in a real campaign. Something that works at ECL 10. See campaign parameters below. I'm not asking for a build, just some ideas.

Parameters: Pretty much everything goes, as far as source material is concerned, but there are a few salient house rules in effect:
  • No fighter allowed. This does not occlude melee characters, just the class. ToB classes are treated as fighters of their level for the purpose of qualifying for fighter specific feats.
  • Taint rules are modified such that the thresholds are halved and rounded down to the nearest integer in all categories, making taint significantly more dangerous to accrue.
  • Polymorph and similar effects may or may not be on the chopping block. Lets just avoid that cheese.
  • Obviously cheese like: action novas, ascendancy plots, infinite or very large stacking of anything are out. Mainly because they're stupid in a real campaign.

Example:
For example, I used a Black Ajah Aes Sedai from the Wheel of Time series as a muse. This is what I came up with based on that. You don't need to include a build, just a sketch of how you might implement a particular idea. Mentioning nifty tricks would work too. I've been away for quite some time... and I can't remember half of what I used to know it seems.

For some reason Scar Enforcer has always been one of my favorite PrCs (flavour wise of course).

I have never been able to create a build I could actually use in a campaign but the need is still there.

You could try picking a similar PrC then create fluff around ti that is to your liking then go to town creating a build for it that actually works and that you would want to play.

As muses go, have you ever read 'The Count of Monte Cristo'? I think a character like the Count would be so fricken awesome. He would be some sort of Chameleon/ Factotum mix, maybe. If you make a build for this, would you mind posting it here? I would love to see it.

Another idea is to create a character much like Kiprusoff (the Glagary Flames goaltender - NHL [Hockey]) A agile, heavily armoured speed freak with a fire theme. Inspiration from wierd places - pick your favorite (or neatest) sports player and go to town imagining them as a D&D character.

One of my favorite characters was a Grey Elf who descended from a fallen line of nobility. Given his upbringing, he was extremely prejudice and was fun to roleplay. His servants had been small creatures and one of our members had been a whisper gnome, hilarity ensued as he attempted to order the uber crossbow-using rogue around like a butler.

We also gave him the Holy Grail for the Lulz of it all

10th level is excellent for a Mystic Ranger build. Versatile, works pretty well in any campaign, can fill lots of roles.

A human glaivelock Warlock 2/Human Paragon 3/Cyran Avenger 5 could be pretty interesting, though I'm not sure about the specifics of the build. You do lose 2 levels of invocations.

The standard Daring Outlaw shoud be pretty doable as a Rogue 4/Swashbuckler 6, too. With your available wealth, a pair of organrippers and the wands to help your sneak attacking are totally buyable.

The standard war weaver is also ECL 10 - Wizard 5/War Weaver 5. Very helpful to the party and as powerful as any full caster.

At this ECL, you could also use some hengeyokai/changeling/shifter foolishness. Full BAB 4/Warshaper 4/Anything else 2 is pretty killer.

I think at ECL 10 you could also go for a gish build. Might I suggest Suel Arcanamach?

can you post more info about the campaign? That would be very useful for determining what sort of "muse" will be a good fit.

I think youze people have it all wardsback.

How about a Valkyrie warrior muse? Basically just your typical bard/paladin/sublime chord gish... but very blond and Nordic

You asked for a muse so I gave you one ^^

I just helped a friend build an Orc Bard/LT Barb/Battle Howler of Grumsh for a campaign, and it's working out really really well for him. 8-14 is the sweetspot for the power level, there, as it's high enough to get a really nice inspire courage bonus, but low enough that none of the casters/gishes in the group are immune to mind affecting yet.

Oh yes, that was one of my favorite builds. I'd have to think a bit on how to flavor it up to my satisfaction, though. It is, by and large, a fairly mechanical build.

Some people have certainly kept the faith more than I have... Good to see a familiar, ah, avatar. :-)

This is more in line with what I'm looking for. Can't say I'm getting a good Monte Cristo vibe at the moment, but at least the imagery is strong -- maybe later, when I'm feeling suave. Mechanics, optimization, tricks etc for the sake of creating them or even using them is not something I'm really interested in any longer.

Also: The more multifaceted the character's muse the better. 2D muses like a lot of the X-men characters leave something to be desired. And, yes, if I do think of something and build I'll be sure to post it.

Do you know what your party mates are playing? It can be fun to make a character to complement someone else, from a RP and mechanics perspective.

In a game I'm just joining, I made a "bodyguard" for a guy playing a warforged psion, and made up a homeworld background for us where humans are second class citizens/slaves to their warforged overlords. He plans to call my guy "Meat", and other derogatory terms, and in general boss him around, while I'll be morose and slavishly devoted to him. It should be great fun. :D

I made mine part of an order similar to the FR Monks of the long death, and also he is works for the military of the human nation in our homebrew world as part of an elite commando unit.

I figured judiciously applying "quotes" to this made it approximately a thousand times more hilarious. I'm curious. Does your "character" also wear a gimp mask?

But to answer your question: No. I'm not aware of a significant theme among the party at this time, apart from them all being associated in some fashion by being shipmates. Evidently, I'm to be recruited into their employ in the first session.

I suppose I should clarify that I do like "sophisticated" characters more. Characters with a bent for the intellectual, not averse to a bit of pomp and circumstance, and of elevated position. The Count of Monte Cristo struck pretty close to that goal for a muse, but I'm actually leaning towards female characters at the moment, just to change up the usual sausage fest sensation I've had with D&D up to this point.

Unfortunately, there aren't many strong female role models that fit that mold. Bene Jesserit and Aes Sedai were the best I could come up with at the time.

Hm... I just had an interesting brain wave. What about an Arabic flavored character. Dancing Dervish? Walker in the waste? Hmmm.... Anyone got a good fictional (or nonfictional) Arabic woman with a cool story I might emulate?

Layla

erm...I mean...Leyli

It's not much to go on, as the story is more about him and his poetry, but any woman that can literally drive a man to madness in the desert has to have something interesting about HER.

No, but now that you mention it, a leash might be appropriately hilarious. :D

I don't completely have a story for you, but here's the gist:

You are a Calishite princess (or other arabian-flavored royal lass) who has a penchant for the daring, athletic type thing. Sort of Catherine-Zeta Jones ala Zoro, mixed with a bit more arabian/Jasmine/Aladdin flavor. She sneaks out of the palace one night, and never returns (adds in later hooks for DM as he/she desires), to slum it with the local folk. Hell, she could be a local legend, a masked lady (think purple face scarf) of some variety or other.

Swashbucker/Swordsage, focusing on two-weapon fighting with the desert wind manuevers and scimitars. Have a good jump/tumble scores and dance around. Eventually you could hit dervish with it. Not super optimized, but it works. Maybe even try to mix bard/sorcerer in there for some gishyness?

I realize I've made up a lot of words here, but the flavor TOTALLY works for me, at least, for what you just mentioned. I bet there's even some masks in the magic item compendium that could add to the flavor a bit.

endalia

I created this awesome female character for a Faerun game I joined maybe a year ago. She was called Endalia :P

Anyway, she was the daughter of a mighty military man in Baldur's Gate. She had a older brother who died when she was five, and his death was the catalyst to a rift within the family between her father and her uncle. They both wanted to solve the murder, but when the investigation didn't lead anywhere the city council decided to end the investigation. Her father accepted the decision, her uncle did not.

Due to this she had to constantly live up to the expectations her father would have to her brother. She trained hard in all the areas she was trained in, from dancing to leading to swordplay.
When she was 17 a spurned lover tried to kill her. He was sentenced to prison.

That might have been a bit more detail than what you were looking for... :P
Anyway she would probably be a Warblade or Crusader. Due to some story fluff stuff she had a Gith-forged Bastard Sword that was used by a heroic and forgotten ancestor, and she was going into Anointed Knight, to show her focus on discovering who her heroic ancestor was.

A female style “Count of Monte Cristo” eh?

Let’s see what I got…

Daerdra – Celtic Warrior Princess and Lordess of the Dance (last part was a joke)

Deidra is the last of a long line of warrior princesses – though she doesn’t know it.

Not being able to remember much of her childhood, all Daerdra knows is her name, relative age and that she was found in a city gutter by a local Monastery (western style).
Raised within the ranks of priests and monks (male and female), Daerdra became somewhat of a “pet” project and adopted child to the entire inhabitants of the church. The monastery belonged to the Goddess Alais – Dryad Goddess of War, Knowledge, Nature and Purity. Being an intelligent, curious child caused Daerdra a lot of problems in her early years, hours upon hours of boring lectures being attempted to simply try and get her to comply – yet she continued to do her own thing, always asking, “Why?” Plothook could involve her finding her past etc etc.

Swashbuckler type character intelligent and suave. Going for a different angle then the dervish/ swashbuckler type TWF. I figured a Chaotic Good ‘cleric’ who doesn’t act like a cleric at all would be a pretty awesome twist.

Cloistered Cleric 3/ Church Inquisitor 1/ Ordained Champion 5/ Prestige Paladin 1 (or Knight of the Raven) Get Dynamic Priest and make everything rely on Charisma. Knowledge Devotion, TWF and Holy Warrior reserve feat. You know what else.

More to come later - I'm in a hurry.

Since I've been watching a lot of anime recently, if you're looking for strong female archetypes you could take a look at building a character like Nami from One Piece or Nabiki from Ranma. Basically a backstory that emphasized a need for money to survive while a child that grew into an obsession with wealth, preferably gained by tricking or stealing it from someone else who has more than they know how to deal with.

With Nabiki, the character doesn't do a lot in combat, so mechanics wise there isn't much to match up. Nami though has a staff fighting combat style that would be fairly easy to emulate feat-wise along with a focus on weather effects and illusions. The mystic ranger that someone mentioned earlier might actually work well for this given the number of skill points available (using some of the methods of gaining alternate class skills to get the prerequisite bluff and other required skills), ranger and sorcerer/wizard spells, and full BAB.

The character focus would really be on wealth though (to the point where they practically swoon at large sums of gold. ) and using others around them to their advantage, whether enemy or ally, in or out of combat.
