| #1ljr2600Jul 15, 2008 0:22:37 | Let me begin with a story. Once upon a time a level 7 wizard was set upon all sides by a undead CR 13 encounter without his party and few spells. Through a quirky house rule that lets this wizard deliberately cause wild surges with a spell slot, he frantically sought to escape the situation. With sweat on his brow, he declared himself the target and rolled his 4d10. All the while praying to the dice gods to be merciful, and merciful they were. Sort of. Instead becoming royalty, or developing a strange desire for fish sticks, he exchanged personalities and powers with the nearest lich. He quickly cast away the foul undead he was beset by with his new found abilities, and now feels lost because he's through DM intervention 7 HD Elf, with a wizard's stats, and the abilities of a Mature Adult blue dragon dracolich. Now to the nitty gritty, my character sheet: 7 HD Gray Ef str 6 dex 16 con 12 int 18 wis 8 cha 14 I have all the abilities of a Mature Adult Blue Dragon turned dracolich (but not the HD, I need to speak with the DM about that again.. not sure why I got my character level in HD instead of the Dracolich's) My PC used to be a debuff/battlefield control wizard. The party isn't in dire need of anything, we've been smashing through everything the DM has tossed at us. Only upcoming thing that may give us trouble is a level 12 Ur Priest. Any thoughts on what I could build this into? My DM is open minded and has a sense of humor, so he will probably accept just about anything I can draw from just about any book out there for 3.5. Feat, skill requirements aren't important, so long as a I mostly satisfy it I can probably arrange something with the DM. Thanks for any input! |

Unless I'm mistaken, doesn't a character's base ability need to be 10+spell level to be able to cast a spell? I'd be stuck casting level 4 spells until level 12, when I could add another point to cha and cast level 5 spells. Is there a way to work around this? I'd be worried about the original dracolich hunting you down to reclaim his powers... We also switched personalities. Didn't bring that up since its not really relevant to the optimization aspect of the character. But, the former dracolich now is neutral good, and slightly crazy trickster. Not a bad bone in him. |

Nothing in the rules says it is "base" ability score. Enhancement bonuses from items and other permanent effects work just fine for boosting it. And are you not still a wizard? You lost your class level abilities also? |
| #6vangrueJul 15, 2008 15:29:24 | Yeah, an enhancement bonus should work just fine. However, if an item granting this to you breaks or is lost or suppressed, you're SOL on your higher level spells. |
| #7ljr2600Jul 17, 2008 15:02:17 | Alright, its been a few more days and I've had some more time to mull over the predicament. I think that there are a few ways to make the most out of now being a level 7 wizard/level 7 sorc, at PC level 7, and they center around the dual spell-casting classes. First, I can pursue Ultimate Magus, through level 17. The PC will be a 16 wizard/16 sorc. Second, I can take a divine spell caster level, die, come back as a dracolich, take a level in one of the three Divine Conversion (convert the draconic sorcerer levels to divine casting levels) PrCs from the Draconomicon that I would then be eligible for, then take mystic theurg or true necromancer. From this progression I'd come out a 2 levels behind PC level in wizard spell casting, and 1 level behind PC level in cleric spell casting. For example, at level 15, I'd be casting at a 13th level wizard, and 14th level cleric. Thus I have a second round of questions for the CO board. 1. How do you think the UM and its caster levels stacks against the true necromancer and mystic theurg with 1 less arcane caster level? 2. How do the cleric and druid spell lists stack against each other (PHB & SpC)? 3. Would the Divine Conversion ability of the Dispassionate Watcher, Sacred Warder of Bahamut, and Ravager of Tiamat from the Draconomicon, allow me to convert spontaneous spell casting levels gained from the UM over to divine spell casting levels? For example: level 1-7 7 wizard/7 Sorc ability level 8-17 10 UM level 18 1 Cleric level 19 1 Sacred Warder of Bahamut What would become of my spontaneous arcane spell casting at level 19? (edit, clarification of question) |
| #8panserbjorn_xJul 18, 2008 0:29:34 | 1. How do you think the UM and its caster levels stacks against the true necromancer and mystic theurg with 1 less arcane caster level? Well you still have to take a level in cleric to get the domain, so take that into consideration. At level 15 you would only have 12th-level Wizard and 11th-level Cleric casting, so this is not very effective. 2. How do the cleric and druid spell lists stack against each other (PHB & SpC)? Depends on what you are looking to gain. If you want a lot of necro spells, the cleric list has more. 3. Would the Divine Conversion ability of the Dispassionate Watcher, Sacred Warder of Bahamut, and Ravager of Tiamat from the Draconomicon, allow me to convert spontaneous spell casting levels gained from the UM over to divine spell casting levels? For example: IMHO, since it's still racially based spont casting, the divine conversion would take effect. ~P_X~ |
